I was wanting to disagree, but I can't think of which brand you could use as substitute for Lego if you wanted to make a game like this with something else. The only realistic option that comes to mind is Transformers, it's magically sci-fi and it has shows, movies, comics, toys, and other games. Even though the characters are more fixed to their form, the robotic nature of them do allow for reasonable customization to be made. There are some other fictional universes that have racing game potential, but I doubt it would be done. Combining Metroid and Starfox into a racer or something for example can produce a great game, but I doubt Nintendo would since it already has Mario Kart and F-Zero. I suppose there's Minecraft since that's a fairly popular name in gaming. Something new might work out now that existing series keep destroying themselves.

I think the insistence on comeback mechanics for both singleplayer and multiplayer racing are the reason I don't enjoy modern racing games. Trackmania is among the only racing games left that I enjoy among recent racing games while I loved tons of them as a kid. Tons of other genres have skill-based win-more and comeback mechanics that you need to use correctly while racing games often feel like they chain everyone into distances from eachother to the point that I never get the same rush of being first that old, jankier games gave me as I just expect to be caught up on whether I make mistakes or not.

They could use characters from Lego City Undercover, there are some memorable characters there and the best part is, It's lego's own idea. Plus, they even had sets with some of the said characters.

very well done, completely agree about the part with puzzles that require community effort I love animal well but the bunny mural felt very weird, I thought everything in the game would be solo solvable, as something along the lines of 'the game requires no internet connection and you can keep revisting it for years finding new secrets' was written on the promotion material, the mural just felt out of place

solving tunic's secret language solo also felt like the perfect amount of difficulty, because it took me several days to get but at no point have I felt that maybe it's not doable solo or that I dont have enough hints from the game to get it done

I've seen this referred to as Knowledge-Based Unlocks, shortened to KBUs, and while increasing the metroidbrainia scope means almost every game can be somehow related to metroid, i do also just really enjoy this name 😁

The method of the building objects tomake your items could still work in a way. But instead having them be randomized, with some types being likely to show up on certain areas and what not. Part of the multiplayer idea from mariokart is making a random box system, but in this case you can see and plan out which item you are grabbing, instead of praying to RNG that you get the right one. This does add in some protection against frontrunning, especially if a system is put in that has the items be more likely to appear as something based on distance from the pack, echoing the distance system for powerful items in mariokart.

I played Lego Racers numerous amounts of times when I was a wee lad to now a 31 yr old adult and TIL, 7:25 a shortcut I never even knew about. I thought I found every shortcut, but that’s the only one I never thought of. I thought they just flickered cuz it’s part of the track, silly me 😂

I saw the title and thought. No. That can't be a video about what i think it isn't.. it's probably one of the unrelated sequels but NO! It is THE Lego Racers game i remember from my childhood! Honestly my favourite game as a kid along with NASCAR racers (the one about the anime inspired show)

In general the current gaming market leans strongly towards multiplay, especially with any kind of racing games. And honestly, its a shame, because a Fast-Paced Speedrun focused singleplay racing game would be amazing AND could feature an online leaderboard to compare your times with others including replay feature so you can watch how others did the races (also to immediatly kick out any cheaters)

I just replayed Obra Dinn for the first time 4 years, and I can safely say that half a decade is about what you need to brain bleach enough of your memory to enjoy a knowledge-based game again. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about Outer Wilds, as there has hardly been a day that has gone by where I haven't thought about the game, or listened to the music, or thought about a different game through the lens of Outer Wilds. Playing it for the first time was a truly remarkable experience. Impactful enough that I can safely say that it changed me as a person, or at least my perception and outlook on the world around me.

9:55 God I miss rock raiders like you wouldn't believe. I wish we got more lego games like that, it was a unique RTS set in a really cool world that ate more hours than I can imagine of my childhood. I'd trade every modern lego game for one like rock raiders in a heartbeat.

Saw this title and was like, oh like La Mulana 1&2. But then no mention of La Mulana at all wow. I guess you havent played em. Well go do that, they are amazing and you really need your brain to finish em without a walkthrough. Also on the Collaborative parts at the end, you gotta check out Environmental Station Alpha and Noita. ESA has some weird endgame content that basicly was an ARG to solve. Might be doable on your own but gonna be nuts. Noita is filled with insane secrets, thats more ARG style. Finding some of these on your own is probably impossible. Also it still has some unsolved mysteries to this day (the eyes code+cauldron)

I would love to make a puzzle game that relies on brute force problem solving and community pages just to see how angry people would get. I played a lot of these games, and there are plenty of places in the game I shout out 'Well how was I supposed to figure that out without a guide'.

I remember Rocket Racer. When I finally beat him at his own race, and he gifted me his car as a price, that was a magical moment. It was a hard-fought battle, and I was so happy when I won. I also won with the dumbest car I'd ever made, a literal blue brick. As for the multiple developer things, it's true, they really did have a lot of studios working on games, but that difference and creativity is what really made so many of the games so memorable. The last Lego game I ever got was a themepark tychoon style game. What's interesting, is that all these games were dubbed in my language (except Bionicle, for some reason...), and the voices were so memorable. I still quote The Brickster from Lego Island 2, all these years later.
