Japan's economy was _really_ good for a few decades, and those few decades happened to coincide with the rise of the electronics industry which Japan leapt headlong into because the rest of the world wasn't paying it much attention which allowed them to pull way ahead on it. Making everything high-tech was as much about national pride as it was about any practical benefits gained from doing so because it allowed them to demonstrate their mastery of electronics to the world. This is why it remains a focus even today despite the economy stagnating since the 90s.
