Why Disney Doesn't Take Risks Anymore

Фильм және анимация

This is a pretty complicated issue and this video only scratches the surface, so I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments! And as always, subbing and liking allows me to put out videos more often, so please do so if you want that. Thanks for your support!

This is why I watch smaller channels when they're recommended, 90% of the time it might be just some kid pointing a camera at a screen, but that 10% of the time I get a channel that really does pop out from the giant litter. to the voice over to the editing.

They did that with Maleficent, and it turned out pretty good. The story of Briar Rose, but told from the perspective of her parents, who were the ones who originally put her in that position, and the dynamic between them, and not just between her and the prince.

That's the thing....Live action films only works with characters or parts of the story that haven't been explored in or talked about, not really re-doing the WHOLE movie all over again. Trying to rely on old franchises can cause the company to stifle in innovation, whereas other companies embrace the changes, and makes something brand new, that hasn't been tempered with.

Disney isn't a film studio anymore, it's a toy and advertising company. Their movies aren't movies, just very long ads for merch which can make way more money than the box office. And everything about those "movies" has to fit a checklist to cover as many demographics as possible, regardless of their original story or themes. That's how you end up with the current flood of repetitive products with no artistic vision and integrity.

I find it really telling on who has worked in the animation industry based on how much they blame certain figures and the people behind the products coming out now, because as you said, it's not just one person or even up to the animators, actors, or production team if Disney is just going to come in and sweep everything away. I just wanted to say this video is fantastic and you are so right about everything. Those new mermaid and Snow White films sound really cool and I hope we get to see something similar to them someday.

Perhaps this is nostalgia, but Disney's 90's remakes were ok, even the animation-to-live-action ones like _101_ _Dalmatians_ . They knew, at the time, that the remake needed to change details to suit the medium, so the dogs didn't talk, it wasn't a musical, etc.

This video really spoke to me in a way I never would have expected, and it is borderline criminal your channel hasn't blown up yet. While a like, subscribe, and promise to see what's next is the best I can offer you, you can bet I'll be super chatting you as soon as you get it.

Really enjoyed this!! You make such a good point - when Disney just remakes their animated classics into often uncanny live actions films that both fail to capture the old charm nor establish a new one ... Isn't it time to start taking some more risks? Branching out, even if source material is still used (like the Snow White example you used!)? It may not work, but their current plan is unsustainable; it certainly isn't going to work forever.

To be honest...Let Them Suffer....I do hope that stockholders will eventually pull out, and any excuse Walt Disney Company makes, they should automatically be "Guilty Until They Can Be Proven Innocent".

Very heartfelt video. I see you @Tin Sensei and you like so many of us are hopeful the Disney we once knew will return. As a millenial myself I hope the next generation will be blessed to have that magic in their lives. And if not disney perhaps a new company will rise to take its place. Puss in boots last wish sparked hope in me that day may be soon... unfortunately nothing Disney has put out has given me any hope that they've learned... I understand they're scared. They want to stick to what's safe... But their stuck on repeat formula is only safe so long as the audience permits it... ... and that time is quickly reaching its end...

Yeah it doesn’t surprise me that the Princess and the Frog flopped, it was set up to fail from the beginning. Disney wanted to get rid of their 2D animation and move on to 3D because it was cheaper. They’ve done this before with Treasure Planet because of how expensive it was to make it with the deep canvassing.

Great video, but where is Treasure Planet ? It must've contributed since the robot character they threw in at the end is generally regarded as terrible, even disliked by kids. And to top off having a single character ruin the movie, Disney completely botched the trailers by showing the entire plot in them. It is a good movie without too much CGI and story - But only if you ignore the trailers and get that robot fully reworked and/or deleted.

Found your channel yesterday and am enjoying the content so far so good luck going forward man I avoid live actions remake cause they are always soooo bad, I mean an animated lion living with a meerkat and a hog I can accept but not a live actions ones, those the only image I can think is simba should be making lunch out of them, and Ariel with dreadlocks is just bizarre man As for princes and the frog Disney may have done such bad advertisement on purpose to shutdown the animated 2D studio and move on to the next big thing, cause they have done that with treasure planet to kill hand-drawn animation and 2D on 3D envoiraments cause it was expensive, I mean the trailer basically spoils the movie and they released it a week after Two towers and while Chamber of secrets was still on cinemas. Part of it was to stop the two directors from continuing to ask about making a treasure island movie, but still they are clearly not adverse to losing some money to kill things they no longer want

There's nothing bad on writing or doing a whole different concept for a movie inspired on a pre-existing ip (movie, book or anything like that). The problem is when you use that nostalgia, with the same title being the same company, you can't really do something that different because you're doing a "remake", which means people will hope to find the same story, probably a bit different, but not that different. If you really want to make something that different, just make a whole different movie with a whole different title. BUt of course, that doesn't sell that well... (Even though I'm sure if they say it's from the same universe or inspired from that movie, with a whole different title would have more success than the last stupid remakes they made so far. But that's just my opinion...).

I'm on board with most of the video, but not defending Kathleen Kennedy. The point is fine in principle, that a given worker in some cubicle is probably not the source of the company's problems. If the internet fixated on the guy who holds the boom mic just off camera, it would be fair to point to some good movies he's associated with and say he must be competent. But KK isn't just some guy in a cubicle, she's in a position of authority and earns her portion of the blame. If she was fully dedicated to making quality movies, there is no doubt KK could have made these less bad. Remember, this isn't just picking a random name from the credits and blaming the best boy or the 17th costume designer for everything. The evidence is out there, of KK participating in interviews where she takes credit for all sorts of bad ideas. Maybe she's lying, and we will eventually discover she had zero authority, that she was just parroting the bad ideas of someone else. That still doesn't make her look good, or imply she's been a positive influence. It's far simpler to conclude she means what she says. Getting rid of KK would not be sufficient to fix Disney, but it would be necessary for them to make halfway decent movies again.

17:30 We all know what happens when people panic instead of listening to a voice of reason: amidst the worst flames they... trample each other to death. I do understand you defend Kathleen Kennedy, I don't deny she might have been successful earlier, but it's just like for example Lauren Hissrich who's also successful in some fields, but couldn't handle The Witcher. Sometimes it's good to know when to leave the stage and let other talents emerge... except for woke talents... woke is evil... XD You have my sincerest /highfive for showing all that love to Princess and the Frog. It's been years since I watched it but I still remember it fondly. Funny how modern snowflakes tend to forget that the world actually is and has always been full of diversity and colors, one needs only to get their nose out of their "place down where the back loses it's noble name" and look around, dig deeper than in their insecurity or wallet. Or perhaps use some therapy to help them become less eager to feel offended. Goes to Disney staff as well.
