Lego Racers Can't Be Made Today

Ойындар

What makes LEGO Racers so captivating, why its unique systems were never seen again, and why they never will be.
I’m a small, part time creator who would love to have more time in the day to make videos. Liking, subscribing and sharing helps me to do that. I’d also love to hear your thoughts on Lego Racers and its systems in the comments.
Shoutout to the folks in the Lego Racers Speedrunning Discord, who helped me fact check this video: Jeynick, Bagel, VincentAuron, FlakesS, GeorgeMHall, and Jugebox98. Also thanks to Jeynick for the spinning white brick animation. / discord

Just wanted to say thanks for such a thoughtful in depth analysis focused on the design elements of Lego Racers. It was the 7th released game I worked on, but the first one I was given pretty much complete freedom to design whatever and however I wanted. It feels good to hear positive nostalgic memories highlighting and reaffirming those creative choices, even a quarter century later. The video was a pleasure to watch and made me smile, Thank you. 👍

Maybe one day I could show something :) Just to be more clear, I'm not trying to get a HD version of the game, the idea is to make it with a more modern gameplay but to keep its soul as most as possible.

@@20coasTer08 Not sure I understand. What made the original LEGE Racers game so special was the fact that it wasn't like modern racing games. If you make a modern racing game, then it isn't LEGO Racers anymore. I'm not quite sure how you can do both. LEGO Racers 2 tried to bridge the divide, and we all know how that turned out. Don't get me wrong; I really enjoyed LEGO Racers 2, (and, in fact, I have never played the original LEGO Racers). But I was often frustrated by the randomness and unclear explanation of the power-ups in LEGO Racers 2. The original LEGO Racers sounds like it chose an identity and stuck with it, instead of trying to be all things to all people.

@@kentslocum Well, it's a personal project. But I didn't want to do a graphic remaster only because its obvious that the gameplay of the game turned old. I replayed it for the purpose of my project obviously. But all the idea is to keep the heart of LR and give it a fresh breath. Not making some LR2 style or something. So basically the concept is to modernize the racing gameplay itself to make something more smooth but still entertaining. It's a bit hard to explain in detail, I'm sorry. Just note that LR was maybe my first game ever and I love it and I want to make some kind of hommage to it by, in a way, making the Lego Racers Sequel I would love to get. But anyway there's a long journey to achieve to even get a small working gameplay thing yet. I just hope I could make it at this point.

@@20coasTer08 I just had an idea that might help for that : Have some "multicolor" bricks ? Basically those bricks would work more like mario kart's boxes (picking up a random item based on your rank), except here it'd just pickup a brick color based on your rank (such as 1st place gets no green, mostly yellow and blue bricks, with some red sometimes, middle ground get more ballanced of everything, and the low ranks get most of the red and green). That way the game has more control on how to balance itself and not being too easy. Now that doesn't remove the color or white bricks from the game, but you could put them at more strategic places (such as, a green brick in a hard to reach spot, a shield in a spot where you might get hit by the environment, or where you need it to get through a shortcut ...) Maybe you could also add more brick colors with some new effects, or add a new white brick tier (so now for the warp you'd need 4 white bricks), making the higher ranks harder to get. The AI and controls could probably get some polish as well, especially the way you turn, and the way the walls "bounce" back ...

I can honestly say that Lego Racers was the first game that ever scared me. So many things in this game caused 5 year-old me great distress. All the bosses, those Mummy things, the horror themed tracks, this game's got real jumpscares too. Can't recall playing any other game with the same sort of aesthetic as Lego Racers, and this video's the first time I'm hearing about that shield shortcut. Maybe an indie dev out there could work some of this game's ideas into their own thing

It is sad that the single player aspect of racing games have disappeared over time. Back in the day there was Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing with their adventure modes, and Mario Kart DS' mission mode (kinda). LEGO Racers doesn't really have an adventure mode, though in my opinion, playing through the circuits feels like more of an adventure than cups in Mario Kart. But when you win the circuit, you unlock the circuit champion's car set, and get more customization options for your car. You also have this in the older Mario Kart games, but to me this felt more special, there was a connection between what you got and what you did. Why do you unlock Funky Kong in Mario Kart Wii by doing some time trials? Nobody knows, but in LEGO Racers, you unlock Captain Redbeard and his pirate/imperial buddies when you win his circuit. As a kid I would replay LEGO Racers over and over again, with new cars and/or challenges, but I haven't touched the cups in Mario Kart DS or Wii in forever. Also, the car customization in this game is amazing, I've never seen something like it. 20:40 The tracks Athens Dash and Daisy Circuit also have the piranha plant plyboards. But the one in Athens is never worth it, and the one in Daisy Circuit is always worth it, so not much decision making there.

Great video - One underrated note is that Racers was robust and just ...worked. We had most of the 90s/2000s Lego PC games, and they were usually pretty unstable or wouldn't work at all. Racers ran perfectly on every PC I installed it on, and would run without the disc after installation. I'd put it on my friends' machines and we'd play it together - funnily enough on single player taking turns, or one friend driving and the other doing power-ups.

Lego Racers was THE game of my childhood. I had all the tracks memorised down to every brick location and all the shortcuts, and when I was not playing it, I was going around humming the themes and annoying my mum by pretending I am Jonny Thunder. My best friend had it too and we often played together and when we were at school, we would troll each other by drawing the mummy curse into each other's notebooks sneakily which meant the one who got cursed had to act confused for a while 😀 So many fond memories!

Also as an addendum, we finally got Rocket Racer as a minifigure not once, but TWICE in LEGO City Stuntz. But sadly this goes back to the "LEGO City as one of the few unlicensed evergreen themes" argument.Even this year we are rumored to have Johnny Thunder, but not in a new Adventurers line, but rather a LEGO City Jungle line. LEGO City is a profitable aspect of original LEGO properties, but that makes every fantasy or action theme homogenized into itself and taking away most of its fantasy elements (even though Space this year opened with some lime-green aliens and more flashy spacecraft designs).

LR2 had shortcuts... it's been too long since I played to recall the exact tracks, but Mars and Arctic had some very notable shortcuts that were usually shorter (well, duh) but had no powerups or avoided the repair zones (and repair zones almost always involved taking a longer path than ignoring repair.) I think LR2 is really slept on, because it had unique mechanics of its own, such as the vehicle destructibility and how that played into map design. I never played LR1, but given the gameplay I've seen of it for all these years I think I'd basically always prefer LR2's setup and maps.

I miss that the older Lego models where very simple. Like they didn't have to make a whole set of specialty parts. Most of the sets were made out of parts that are common and could be found in other sets. Like rocket racer's car for instance, it was made out of common bricks. Unless you count the jet engines, they didn't have to make a whole new piece to make it look cool. 2k fills some nostalgia void but not fully. It has the spirit of making something out of nothing but it feels sullied by the fact it has so many more parts available to use.

Outstanding video. It did my head in having the clip of the warp transition to the mountain biking. I also loved the "hey!" from Voltage when Basil stile the green brick. Fun fact at 14:30 in the cinematic the colour of Rocky Racer's arms are reversed. Ingame his left arm is blue and the right is red. It's been a 2 and a half decade long debate about whether RR is Ausie or not and I guess we now have confirmation. I partially agree with your conclusions about why the LR powerup system won't (and hasn't) been created in a modern game. I think that a brand new IP called Rego Lacers could made and be everything Lego Racers was and more... It could be a truely amazing game... That no one would buy. It's not marketable at all in 2023. A single-player cartoon racer just won't sell. It may have a niche audience, i.e. just me, but LR was made when multiplayer racers were still being popularised and a single player cartoon racer was acceptance. Well done on the video and thanks for covering such an underrated game!

Grip Combat Racing is pretty good about shortcuts, not a cart racer I know, but it's the first modern thing, that came to my mind. Most shortcuts have you trade off safely passing an obstacle with doing it the more risky way. You also have traps that you can shoot with missiles to trigger them. It also has a pretty cool mechanic, where you have two item slots and based on the situation you can upgrade one of the items with the other, freeing up another spot. This enables you to strategize a bit more.

These types of shortcuts where you pay a resources to use them was acutally done agaub in Split Seccond in 2010. It's not a party kart racer but inside the game you had an engery bar that could fill up three times. There where small shortcuts that like opening a gate to a small tunnel or lower a plane fuselage to skip a small section of the track or just a corner. But there where also big shortcuts or better discribed as course changes that used all three bars. These included blowing up a TV Tower/ Airport Tower to let it fall on the track to crate a new route, blowing up a harbor bridge that was part of the track beforehand, letting a cruiseliner crash into the track to create new route, blowing up the road so you have to use the airport parking garage now as the race course insted of the airport roads, letting a cargo train derail loaded with explosive to collaps a highway that was part of the track before,s or blowing up a full on dam so you have to drive through the inside of the dam instead of the outside. That's just a small selection, there where a lot more then that.

One way to nerf the warp would be adjusting the warp distance based on your position. The further away you are from the rest, the shorter distance gets. If you're on rock bottom position, you basically get warped next to a player who's ahead of you.

So at several points throughout the video I thought "okay but does this guy just not know about Modnation Racers?" because it has a lot of the things you want. -it has a great cast of characters and a fun story for singleplayer -it has an item system that not only has random item boxes with an upgrade system, featuring the warp but balanced so you can only get a speedboost powerup in very low placements, meaning upgrading it to a warp takes longer for the power it provides, but also every single item and upgraded version of it can be dropped as a mine with the mine varying based on the level of the upgrade -the items are: --- dummy missile that bounces a few times > swarm of 3 homing missiles that target the player ahead of you > swarm of hydra missiles that target everyone in front of you ---close range sonic boom aoe > launching 3 sonic bombs in an arc ahead of you > a sonic bomb that travels down the entire length of the course, knocking out everyone until it passes the person in the lead ---straight lighting shot > homing lightning ball that has an aoe when it hits the person ahead of you > a rocket that launches into the atmosphere and calls down lighting on everyone in front of you ---short speed boost > extremely long speed boost > warp ---these all have mine variants that essentially do the same thing regardless of item. tier 1 explodes right after you drop it > tier 2 persists until someone hits it > tier 3 is tier 2 but with a larger trigger aoe. Warp specifically has it's own mine which drops a puddle, causing other players to spin out and each spin out grants charge to the energy meter ---you don't even need items to hit other players because you can sideswipe them, which costs some of an energy meter but gives more than it takes ---Hitting another player with a tier 2, 3 or sideswipe will downgrade their collected item, making staying ahead significantly more dangerous than it already was, each lap becoming more dangerous as items go up in tiers and the track gets more and more mines dropped on it -the energy meter is built by drifting, tricks, hitting people, etc and is spent on either a slow burning speed boost or a shield that chews through the whole bar in about 4 seconds -a trackbuilder so even if you don't like the default tracks and their shortcuts, you can just build your own or edit an existing one and the game has functions like being able to make switches that open doors if you run over them -robust multiplayer functionality because the game leaned very hard into player expression for creating tracks, karts, and drivers -the monetization model was reasonable. either expansion packs with new themes (city, far east, etc) or were individual karts/drivers for extra things to work with in the creative tools

I just want to say, thank you you for mentioning Lego Racers game here and what makes the game great. When I first played Lego Racers, I noticed that the power-ups they had are different from the traditional Mario Kart formula, before figuring out the meaning of this. It is interesting in how its developer High Voltage Software was able to make the game an excellent home run even with some flaws. If there is any new true sequel to Lego Racers, not counting Lego Racers 2 and Lego 2K Drive and even Drom Racers, hope it will hit a grand slam

11:20 Just wanted to say, that Bionicle: The Game (PC/Console) was developed by Argonaut Games. The cancelled Bionicle: The Legend of Mata Nui, and the GBA release Bionicle: Quest for the Toa (previously known as Tales of the Tohunga) were developed by Saffire.

One of the newer lego games, that isn't just a tale-sort of game that I really like is Lego Worlds. That game is perfect for older lego players to jump into something newer.

Sonic&sega all star racing transformed was last good skill-based kart racing, it mixed outrun, mario kart and diddy kong racing perfectly, and its very skill based and doesn't rely on item RNG like mario kart. Its shortcuts are as lame as mario kart, theres still a lot of strategy, a lot of mechanics with high skill cap like risk boosts in flying selections. And the items can be used in many ways, like you can use its equivalent of fake question mark block to block players behind you, or to throw it forward, its blue shell equivalent throws mini maze of obstacles to the player in the first so more skilled player can dodge it, but you can also "throw" it backwards to fuck everyone up. Then theres also the boost system with six tiers, it caps at three(boost pad in the floor) but if you use boost item afterwards it can go up and give huge boost, and you can hold the drift boost endlessly if you are skilled enough to get bigger boost from the boost pads. And you can also do tricks mid-air, if you do three in different directions you can get maximum boost, but you can also use the rolls to get momentum in some big drops. And I really like its time trial mode, where its just one lap that endlessly loops so you can play it over and over again. And unlike games mentioned in this video(other than mario kart), it was online too, the PC version is even active on good days these days, but nowhere as active as it used to be(its probably dead as the game has some issues on modern hardware). Too bad the sequel, sonic team racing, sucked ass and the online on PC was broken from day1 and they never bothered to patch it and it got zero support or updates.

Giving different carts or racers different unique abilities would also provide different strategies. giving a character a simple hop ability and another a battering ram would mean that you could have shortcuts or routs or even just different racing strategies for each unique ability carts or characters have. Then those abilities could combo with the power ups picked up along the track in different unique ways. Then you could have stats in the selection screen saying "This character excels at shortcuts." while another might say "Isn't slowed down by obstacles or wall bouncing" So different ones naturally would race completely differently and some might not want to take shortcuts because it is faster for them to just bash through the main track's obstacles or because their heavy cart can't make the jump needed to access the shortcut. This would probably be a mess of a game, But it is a fun thought experiment.

The thing about the Short Cut system is that it's reliant on the powerup system of being able to pick up what you want instead of relying on RNG. Like off the top of my head there's a path that has 3 white bricks that basically ends in a dead end. But if you have a green, you just warp out no problem. So having short cuts that require something to use suddenly becomes much more tedious when you're having to pray to RNGesus for the item you want. And also the short cuts where they might not be as good but offer an item you'd want like white bricks or a green just aren't possible. Side note I was surprised to see some shortcuts I NEVER knew about even after all my time playing this as a kid. Then again, I think I mostly warped around the map so. While you are right about how there won't be one like Lego Racers one unless they decide to do a straight remaster of it. I'm more just curious how it took them so long to even bother trying to make another after 2, and I guess Speed Drome. And we Wound up with Lego 2k Microtransactions, err, Drive. Which is so fraught with it's own problems it's hard to focus on it being better or worse.

What about fixed power-ups that scale in effectiveness by what place you're in? Boosts that don't go as far or fast in the lead, attack items causing longer spin-outs or having more ammo, that sort of thing.

First lego games where just something else, such a shame those days are long gone...

Great video, I'd love to see your ideas taken by a developer. I'd like there to be just as much focus on the singleplayer as the multiplayer though, there's more than enough game IP's that have ditched singleplayer (semi)completely. My favorite race/car games all had an actual story or advanced singleplayer mechanics, some of the Burnout games come to mind, as well as NFS Underground and Most Wanted. Being able to craft your own kart is a must for a Lego game, the fact Racers 2 almost completely removed this option was the biggest reason for it to be a downgrade to me, it's not a Lego game without building. To me that's the biggest reason for Lego games today to feel different: There's no building anymore, IN A LEGO GAME. This is why Rock Raiders and Racers 1 will ALWAYS be my favorite Lego games, they combined building with actual gameplay. Instead of one or the other, like Creator (Kingdoms) being build only vs Lego Island 2 being gameplay only with (almost) no building elements.

i'm fond of this game, as well as the ero of lego having loads of their own themes before they had lots of licensed IPs. I want 2k drive, despite the 2k bs. It looks fun and I want to build and race lego cars in that game. I do wish devs didn't shy away from making single player focused games, let alone single player focused racing games. That's a recipe for an extra niche game. Modnation Racers does copy the power up upgrading mechanic, even the LV3 boost is a warp. However, the rest of the powerups just turn into bullet bills once you get them to LV3. Blur is my favorite skill-based "kart" racer. It doesn't have the randomness that most kart racers have.

Really great video with detailed points! And while I would also like to see more cool shortcuts in existing series, I believe that there _is_ one saving grace for this game concept in the modern gaming space: _indie devs._ This certainly is a niche, but hey, niches are what indie games are (partially) _made_ for; to take on all the cool ideas unfit for the "big guys" To be honest, as someone with a weird relationship with kart racers, where I'd _say_ i like them, but never found the "right spark" to keep playing them more than a few occasional times, this video has gotten me really interested. At the very least, I'm definitely gonna try out lego racers and see what I can learn. ...In the best case, since I'm not really busy with anything as of late, I _might_ add a new game project onto my own todo list :)
