Mike Holton - hand made crafts
Hi All, this channel is dedicated to the creative side of wood craft, the majority of the videos will be woodturning and experimentation with resins and other materials. I will be sharing trips and techniques you are free to use and experiment with yourself but at your own risk.
Thank you all for joining me on this journey.

Beautiful 🤩
Which is your favourite finish
Awesome job, I'm definitely going to try that.
Beautiful piece
Probably one of the top ones so far - and as others below have said, clear resin could be a good experiment. As ever, great to watch. Thanks Mike.
Thank you very much Shaun 😊
Love it! One of my favorites I think. Simple design combined with beautiful wood lets each of the elements shine through. Definitely a case where “the sum is greater than individual parts”! Nice job…again!
Thank you very much Howard 🙂
Fantastic flying saucer!
Haha thanks 😂
Well done
Thanks Gregory 😁
Fun experiment, I was talking through the video device. Mike use a router lol… I think another fun experiment would be after the pieces is routed out and ebonized to then go back with the Dremel and gingerly. Remove an amount of the ebonized wood in the center of the channel. I really liked the contrast there with the matching color of the natural Oak above… I think it could still be done on that piece and would even be a fun go back video and would present a visual enhancement.
Thanks, that's a great idea 🤠
💞
Thanks 😃
Beautiful piece!
Thanks Tommy 😃
It’s very pretty! I love your work. ❤
Thanks so much Beverly 😃
Gorgeous burl! Rim design also gorgeous. Kind of a Jetsons look about it. I’d like to see chipped piece fiddled with some more to add another dimension to your rim design. I also vote for a dedicated safety episode.
Thanks Mary, it is in progress 😃
Love how you work
Thanks so much Sandra 😃
Oh My God Mike - I had been holding my breath through this one, right from the very beginning. I thought at one point, maybe it was going to separate from the sacrificial stock you glued to the base, so when you got through that phase, I relaxed a little bit and thought you were home safe. When it leapt off the lathe toward the very end of the video, I nearly fell off my seat! I'm so glad it didn't get destroyed mate. It turned out really well in the end - and I do appreciate that you share all your trials and adventures, as well as your creative process (with all of of us watching from home). One of the best turners on YT.
Thanks so much, I try to keep it as real as possible, we all have these problems 😂😅😃
They should put hazard tape all around this guy. My OCD went through the roof.
Haha sorry 😃
What a joy to watch
Thanks so much Andy 😃
Very nice 🎉
Thanks Audie 😃
A STUPENDOUS PLATTER MARK👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💕🇬🇧
Thanks Maud, but who is Mark 😅😂😃
Nicely done mike. I would've been tempted to burn the live edge. Glad you left it as is.
Thanks David, I've not burned anything for a while, may have to do it 😃
Beautiful
Thank you😃
Beautiful work Mike. I also think that a clear or light opaque wound look great as well as the dark colours you used.
Thank you! If the edge on one of the burls was better I would have made it more transparent 😃
Hello Mike. Well, that little “adventure” was well worth the final result. The bowl turned out so beautifully - a proper treasure for the future. I do like the fact you are happy to experiment and think outside the normal wood turning box, which makes what you produce so interesting and also a pleasure to watch as it develops and unfolds. As always, I am already looking forward to what you have planned for your next “experiment” and am sure it will be equally as delightful as this one. Have a great week.
Thanks Angela, I do like the way this one came out, all the best and I hope you have a great week as well 😃
Lovely peace, but I have the best one. 👌
Thanks Paul and yes you do 😃
Wellllllll shit, Mike. I’m out of videos.
Haha now what are you going to do!!! 😂😅😜 Start again?
@@MikeHolton Well yeah…you’re my absolute favorite turner. 🥸
@@DPerney1 Thanks so much 🥰
Nice video, Mike. The discus bowl looks great Smile, the wood almost looks like "Bruyere wood" where pipes are made. 🥴
Thanks and yes it does 😃
Too much bla-bla-bla
This is the channel's format, sorry if it is not for you.
Phew! glad it was saved. We all have war wounds, so why shouldn't such objects? I'd thought copper or bronze resin, but think the iridescent is lovely too. BTW, what do you do with your wood shavings? As an allotmenteer, I have built Hugelbetten & the ground level layer is old wood, which not only acts as a reservoir for rain water & nutrients for growing plants, but is home to rose chafer beetle larvae - which mature in their hundreds & turn the wood to the BEST soil ever.
That sounds like a great idea. I do compost what I can, the rest is taken by the council to be composted as well.
Thank you, my wife would really like to have this.
No worries ☺️
nice bowl !
Thanks! 😃
Hi Mike, lovely bowl and great use of 3 slices probably not usable individually. With regard to the screw heads snapping off, would it be worth drilling pilot holes as opposed to drilling in the screws direct? It's happened to me before so now I drill holes first especially with the harder woods.
Thanks Bob, I will be doing just that 😃
Absolutely beautiful. I love the color.
Thank you so much! 😃
You should do a donation video for a pressure pot, I know you don't like that sort of thing but it would go to the benefit of the videos, I'm sure a lot of people would be more than happy to drop a fiver to enable you to do different projects...we get loads of free high quality videos after all!
Thanks Terry but between you and me I have just converted a pail pressure pot into a resin one and the video of me doing it should be out at the weekend 😃
Thank you, looking forward to your next video's
Thanks Paul 😃
Was that a plug cutter that you used on the broken screws?
Indeed it was, works well 😃
Hi Mike, another stunning piece. The Jarrah Burl did seem hard but what a marvellous finish with the resin also. Good choice leaving the lip it makes it stand out more adding to the finished bowl. Thanks for the video looking forward to the next one. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much Roy, no idea yet whet the next one will be 😀
Really enjoyed this turning. You have a great talent and I appreciate you sharing it.
Thanks so much Rocky 😃
The first couple of times I saw slow-motion on this channel were instances where disaster struck: the piece broke, or came off the lathe, etc. So now when you go into slo-mo, my reaction is "Oh no! What's going to go wrong!" LOL Glad nothing did go wrong. Spectacular piece. I love how the grain seems to match going across the resin, so it almost looks like it was 1 piece of wood, instead of 3.
Thanks so much that is what I was hoping for with the 3 pieces. I have had a few people start to worry when it went into slomo lol, sorry about that 😃
Awesome!!!!!
Thanks! 😃
Lovely piece of down under wood well done Mike yours Ian Christchurch New Zealand cheers
Thanks so much Ian 😃
Absolutely stunning work Mike, I think that may be my favorite so far. The accent ring is perfect. I yelled at my screen "Noooooo" when you said you were going to cut it off. I've never worked with Jarrah, now I have to try and find some. Thank you for sharing this beauty, hope you have a great day!
Thanks Scott, so glad I did not cut it off now lol, I'm pretty happy with the way this came out. Jarrah is a nice wood, but there are a lot of holes and splits in it so take care, all the best Mike 😃
