THE HALO BOWL -A World's First: Woodturning Experiment with Epoxy Resin
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
World's First? I think so but please tell me if I'm wrong. This week we are repurposing a halo/ring light that was being thrown away. We combine it with a beautiful sapele wood blank and epoxy resin and turn it into the first of it's kind.

I’ll be honest Mike, I didn’t think this would work practically or aesthetically. Not only was I 100% wrong it actually looks amazing. Keep on inspiring us.

Here's a tip for those of you who have a plastic disc for marking out the centre of blanks, as Mike does at around 2:50. Take some wax crayons of different colours, and colour in each circle in sequence, say red, then blue, then green. When you put the disc on the wood, it is way easier to line up say the green ring with the edge of the wood all round, and then you can mark the centre. Without the colour, you end up counting rings or tracing them round the outside to work out if you have the right position, which is a lot slower.

Sapele always looks terrific. Nice chatoyence. I love the project. Very well done. I was a bit nervous when you were soldering the wires. A potential opportunity for "Murphy" to pay a visit, but glad he was too busy elsewhere. Good idea to seal the wood. I failed to seal an epoxy resin inlay in a mahogany bowl. The resin went into the pores and made the outside of the bowl dark which meant the piece was ruined. Lesson learned the hard way. You were saving the LED light in this case. For others wanting to try this interesting idea, try looking for an LED ring where the LED's can be changed to different colours. Then just use white resin to diffuse the light and the LED to get a desired colour. Dave.

So many good things to say about this one, Mike. Firstly, its always nice to see something that is working but no longer wanted get utilized for something new, rather than just tossed in the bin - Thanks for giving that light a new life and saving it from the landfill!. Nice clean soldering job in the LED ring, and a really pretty color in the resin. Very classy shape to the whole bowl - really a fantastic piece all the way around. Keep up the great work!

Hi Mike. Very impressive and inspiring. You snuck in the color changing lights at the end. That's so cool. I was a bit worried when you went to turn it (after installing the light ring) to clean it up and thought "what about the wire? Is it going to be flopping around?" Then realized that of course you would tape it down. I love the whole project. Maybe instead of giving it away you should give it to your daughter as a lesson in re-purposing rather then just throwing things away. I just love it. How very cool. Take care and keep turning. Bill Riley.

Great stuff! I’m in the process of designing a lightsource above the dining table, three bowls with each a led strip in the inside rim, and a goldplated innerside as reflector. Experts now warned me to be sure that the leds can get rid of their heat by glueing them on a metal strip. If not, they won’t last as long. Good luck, be safe!
