Like many of your videos that don't start off with a wood blank, at the beginnings I often think, "How's he going to make this wonky piece of wood work?" And you do make it work every time and this is no different. Well done, Mike! 👍

Hello again Mike. That’s a lovely bowl. I seldom read other people’s comments before making my own but today is an exception: I have never bought a blank; every piece I make is either from offcuts or tree trunks. I currently have several logs around my garden waiting to be chainsaw’d to size. Keep up the good work and I hope to meet you at Harrogate 🌞

Thanks Kathryn, I've just given this piece to my middle son 😊
My first thought when I saw all of that spalting was "saturate it with CA glue to keep it from coming apart when it starts spinning." Proving once again that you have a far better feel for the wood than I do. It came out magnificent, and there's no reason for you to apologize for the number of winged bowls you make. If they're as beautiful as this one, go for it! I hope your eBay offerings work out well. I just wish that I could afford to bid what they are worth. Oh, well, just another joy of living on a fixed income. Keep up the awesome work. I look forward to your next video.
@MikeHolton

Hi Dave, I had a previous piece I had to do that with, used a lot of CA glue to make it turnable. This was in a much better state. I'm slightly embarrassed how much some of the pieces are going for on eBay which I realise is pricing people out the game so I was thinking of making a few pieces and selling for a smaller fixed fee. All the best and thanks as always for your amazing support.

Once again fantastic work Mike! I love the look of spalted wood and fortunately I have an overabundance of it right now. When Hurricane Michael came thru our neck of southern Georgia in 2018 it took down a huge pecan limb out of one of my trees. I cut it up and let it sit outside for the last five years and every bit of it is spalted. I'm going to lose a small portion of it to rot but the rest is going to be a joy to turn. Keep up the good work and thanks for all of the ideas you inspire.

I enjoyed it! I can see where your passion for the winged bowl comes from now. The contrast between the perfect hemisphere and the original natural shape is striking. Looks to me like this was a very brave yet worthwhile choice not to cut the blank into a rounder profile to start. With potentially dodgy wood and the chance of the piece going for a high velocity walk with those sharp corners digging into everything in its path. Danish oil... does it smell baconish? Thank you Mike as ever for your dedication and persistence.

I love Spalted wood. and this piece turned out stunning. I cut trees on my property for firewood, which can sit for a while, so Spalting happens quite a lot. I will often saturate the punky wood with CA. It's a balance between cost etc. But sometimes the grain is worth it. I have to admit, I have not turned a winged bowl. Maybe I should go out to my fire pile and see if anything is suitable.

Hello Mike. This was a little triumph for you. It turned out absolutely beautifully - despite Hooch “sleeping” through it all. I am sure I am not alone in recognising that this can be a dangerous game and appreciate that you always put safety at the forefront of your turnings. But, through this, you still create wonderful pieces of art.
