Very excited for you. 4 1/2 years ago when we moved into our current house, I really enjoyed designing and laying out my workshop. One thing I found helpful was to make what you can mobile. I built mobile carts for many of my smaller woodworking tools that I do not use all the time, like my planer, jointer, bandsaw, router table, etc. Then I can line them up against the wall when not using them and pull them out when needed. I also have a large assembly working table (4ft x 8ft) in the center of my shop that I can also move when I need more space. Another thing that someone suggested me me which was helpful was to first layout your equipment on paper and then go into your shop and using masking tape to layout the outlines of all the big equipment on the floor. This gives you are great walkthrough of what the floorplan will look like. Enjoy! Mike G

Lovely piece of property - I would suggest that you place the lathe on the window side so you have more natural light and turning it 90° to the wall would allow for more room to work with in the long run- I would recommend adding a steel mesh to the window frame to protect the glass in the event you create a projectile - great space to work in! Good luck with your initial setup as it will likely change over time

Now THAT is a nice piece of real estate for your shop. First thing I noticed was Mike has heat! One thing that was a challenge for you in the old shop. Ok Mike I have 1 piece of advice on layout, 1 roll of painter's tape!!! layout the tool footprints on the floor with painter's tape. This gives you real world dimensions to work with. It also lays out real world mobility through your shop. Alternatively, steal some of the moving cardboard and make footprint squares to place on the floor. There is no greater problem than not planning ahead and this method allows you to do that. PLUS, it will allow you to orient to your new outlets. Cheers Mike. Love the new space. I highly recommend putting your machines on casters, especially the ones that will be used to work with longer boards. Roll them to the big door, open the door, work toward the opening. When done, clean your machine and roll it back to where you store it when not in use. Keeps dust, etc toward that end of the shop too, and limits how much dust collection conduit you need to run. Congratulations on your new shop!

I was going to suggest the same, after the "freezer" curtain a work bench as far away as possible maybe next to the rad for colder weather. Tech Ingredients did a video on temporary DIY clean room if anyone else has issues might be worth a look

Nice space Mike! Roomy and plenty of natural light. We have a garage door similar to that and it is not at all draughty except in very high winds from a specific direction. My only suggestion for things to think about is - where do you want that radiator? Next to fridges/freezers is never a good idea! If you are going to divide the space you could move the radiator into your side of the partition, otherwise you're separating yourself from a lovely toasty radiator😊

Before I retired I was an Industrial Engineer with an international company. My main job was factory and work place layouts. I know what you are going through. For a small project like yours I would highly recommend that you cut out small scale cardboard outlines of the equipment. Make at least 10 different layouts by juggling the pieces on a scale drawing to explore the possibilities before making a final decision. As well as the pieces themselves consider work flow and storage.You might want to consider having it all on mobile bases to easily make changes as your ideas evolve. Looks good. Enjoy.

Hello Mike, the approach to your new house is delightful. I do hope you will all be comfortably settled very soon. The excitement you appeared to be desperately holding in just oozed out - and rightly so. The room looks as if it will be a perfect size for all the equipment you have, and that you will acquire later. Just a minor comment; I note that you have windows on one side of the room. Depending where the sun comes from may dictate how you are able to use that light to best advantage whilst working. I don’t mean supplementing the electric light, but using it in a way that is good for the soul. Like on a dreary winters day when a sunbeam breaks through and lifts the spirits. Obviously setting up your equipment to best working advantage will be the main criteria, so please forgive me if my comment looks like it is just plain potty! However, the idea of having a very convenient fridge to store snacks in does look like a genious move. 😉 Take care, and I will look forward to how it all pans out after the planning.

Thanks Angela, the house is south facing so light would come in those windows late afternoon. The problem I have is that sunlight is terrible for the way I film. I have a full time job so I film whenever I can meaning I need to try and keep the lighting even in the video so it does not look strange. I may have to resort to using a blind when I do film, time will tell and there is a lot to sort out. All the best, Mike

I'd suggest an arraignment except I've proven to be pretty useless at organization. I will mention one thing, the idea of keeping a "dirty" shop space and a "clean" shop space is excellent. We moved into our new home a couple years ago and my favorite thing with the new house is that, like you, I have by far the largest shop space I've ever had. And in our place the garage is under the house as well as a nice finished basement room. And that is all mine for my office (day job) and shop space/man cave. So the garage is where all the dust making machines go, the basement room is for the cleaner things. Table saw, band saw, lathe, etc in the garage. Hand tool woodworking (very little airborne dust) in the basement room, along with other interests (electronics bench, etc). And unfortunately I've had some health issues that have kept me from having as much time in the shop as usual, being able to close a door and keep the big dust clouds out is absolutely fantastic! I think you'll love that part, I know I do.

Mike, I have a couple of comments that I hope will be useful, mate. First up, my .athe is similar in size to yours and I have had it positioned in both orientations you are considering. I prefer mine against the wall because dodging around it all the time became a definite pain as well as restricting the use of the floor space as a work area for non turning projects when a temporary work bench (door on saw horses) was needed. My second point is your considering dividing your space. I would suggest exploring the cheaper option of door mounted draft excluders at first. Also you don't want to wall yourself off from your heater, especially after demonstrating your obvious joy at finally having a heated workshop. If dust on the fridge and freezer is an issue, put your wall between the appliances and the heater, keeping the heater in the workshop where it will be most effectively utilised. My problem is on the other end of the spectrum. In summer, my steel shed workshop, which is 10metres by 7 metres with 3.32metre wall height, gets up to as high as 50 degrees Centigrade and being retired, I most definitely cannot afford to a/c it! I am sure it will all work out for the best fit for you, mate. Cheers from Australia.

One thing I'd suggest is, make the most of that natural light and have your work stations by the windows and then add to that with independent overhead lighting to assist in the darker hours. That would then allow you to use the solid wall as a means of a back for storage/tools etc. I'd also fit a couple of extra means of securing that outer door, I trust no-one, anywhere. But it does look great and exciting too.

Mike, I am so incredibly happy for you! That shop really is perfect - the bathroom, radiator (which I am quite jealous of, to be honest 😆) overhead door, plus a huge amount of natural lighting coming from the windows? All of that adds up to a really incredible bit of shop space! I know this has been stressful for you and your family, but I am truly glad that you've found such a good place to live and work. Gratz on your new home and workshop it looks like a great place 😊 Since you want to keep the family area clean, considering giving the "office room" to the family things. Then put wall of some kind across the garage between the windows. Use the inner part for office/cleaner work, and the outer area for the dusty stuff. That way you create bufferzones for that dust, and will gain more wallspace for tools or shelves. 😊

Lovely. The room, the heating, the excitement in your eyes. Love it. You're asking for ideas concerning the layout... Well that's quite tricky not knowing your routines and habits. That's something very personal I think. The main question in my view would be how to place the heart of your workshop, your lathe, I guess. Several things to consider: How is the accessibility of tools, how is the light. But most important in my view: How and where do you feel best and most relaxed/comfortable in that room? It looks like the space should be sufficient to take the lathe on some rolls and try out different placings and look how it feels to you. And then find a way to place the rest accordingly. I think I would try to have a placement where I see the sky when working at the lathe. Maybe a summer placement with open door (looks like the place doesn't require you to work with doors closed fore noise reasons?) and a winter placement with connection to the window? That would be my very personal priority to get connected to nature. But you might as well prefer to have the window in your back or at your side to have better light at your lathe... I'm very curious how it's going to turn out. Enjoy the process of finding out your best setup.

Mike, looks like a nice space. Always fun setting up a new shop. When setting mine up I put together a scaled drawing of the floor are and then cut out scaled pieces to represent to equipment and storage items. I could then move them around until I was happy with it. I do keep everything on wheels as well. Good luck, looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Radiator heat should be great for the shop. Forced air would blow dust around causing nightmares when finish is drying, especially resin coats. And other electric space heaters use a ceramic it wire filament to create the heat which could be dangerous around combustible solvents found in shops. I recommend grabbing a roll of cheap painters tape, to mark off the size of your lathe, and work benches, or if you have spare cardboard UT out pieces that match the size of your shop furniture then move it around the room so you can see how awkward positions are, and make sure you can walk around. That way you only have to move heavy things once.

Your lathe is 7.5 mm wide. Now I am truly in awe of your skills. I had to google what a Tambour is.. My Father worked with cyanide for a while and the health and safety people identified that he needed a cyanide antidote cupboard. One day we got a call from work that he had been taken unwell and we really feared the worst. Turned out he had hit his head on the newly installed cupboard and was properly concussed. I guess the lesson is to make sure you don't put something in an unexpected place from your old workflow. If you put the lathe perpendicular to the wall and stand with the garage door behind you then your old route out would have been to the right so you are going to walk into the wall every time for a while. This video is a diversion from your usual format and it is brilliant. It's great to see you in action Mike and you really are like a kid with a new toy. Do woodturners do some special ritual in a new space, perhaps burn some sacred shavings or hold a gouge up to the first new moon at midnight or get the local vicar to lay hands on your motor? Haha thanks for the morning smile 😀. I have edited the dimensions of the lathe. Indeed I can see myself walking inti a few walls till I get used it, it like trying to find your way to the bathroom when you have changed your bathroom around. I definitely feel like a kid with a new tool as as for ritual, I have considered leaving my scent in the corners but probably best to get it over with and still some blood on the floor before it happens for real 😀.

Exciting stuff. How about putting your lathe under the first window, where there’s natural light, with a tool rack to the right between the windows. You’ll probably need an LED strip light along the ceiling above the lathe. When you get a pillar drill and band saw they could go behind you, along the other wall.

Thanks for the idea and I have considered this but I need continuity of light for filming and natural light would not do well for this. So much to consider lol 😀

I couldn't be happier for you! Congratulations on your new workshop. I was thinking that it might be a boon to have your main working pieces of equipment- the lathe - as far from the roll up garage door as possible. That would give you the best chance of staying warm. I also like your idea of putting the lathe perpendicular to the wall because that could well make your cameras easiest to set up. What an idyllic setting - dying of envy here.

thanks Molly, I want to try to keep as much dust out of the house as possible so the lathe will have to be at the garage door end. can't wait to work everything out 😀

Workshop plans look promising and love that it'll be heated. Might want to consider something better than plastic sheeting to protect laundry area. Maybe something like a modular partition like they have to divide office space.

One suggestion I do have from watching a lot of Adam Savage's videos is trying to set up your workshop with the option to move the different parts around. Whether that is adding wheels or not permanent fixtures which aren't removeable. Just so when you find something doesn't quite work as you thought you have freedom to change it even years later.

WOW! What a treat to find on Sunday night. That's a nice garage/workshop. What swank - a restroom and office? And the windows will add more light. And the driveway to the house flanked by fences, you sure seem to be escaping to the country!

I forgot to say too that you're going to enjoy working in a shop with heat. I rewatched the drive up the lane to the house and it reminds me of my area here as I didn't notice the British countryside. @@MikeHolton

When I need the figure out locations for things like this I would draw a floor plan and then cut out the larger items to scale from a separate sheet of paper, then you can put them onto the floor plan and shift them around to find the best locations

I have done that already with the kids bedrooms and will be doing it for the workshop 😀

You may have already thought of this, but you will need to look at how to prevent dust from getting into the roller blind mechanism . It looks like a great space.

Hello Mike. CONGRATULATIONS!!! How exciting for you. I'm somewhat jealous. It's nice to see YOU also. You only provided dimensions in centimeters and honestly I'm too lazy at this point to do the conversions. LOL. If it was up to me I would turn my lathe to run along the wall but make sure it had enough room ( of course ) to swing large pieces and for the headstock to turn outboard when necessary. As far as your comment about the plastic strips for separating the room, years ago I was production manager at a sign company and we decided to make & install the same kind of divider system for dust control for our paint room which was originally only separated by a vertical half wall from the rest of the shop. Long story short is that it did not work very well for keeping out the dust. It may work for keeping in or out cold or heat but not dust. It might have cut the dust by 20%.Your space is smaller and with your dust extractor, it might make a better difference. I don't mean to be a party pooper but just sharing my experience with the plastic strip wall. It was a major pain to build also. Knowing what I do now and having a 2nd chance, I would build a solid wall & block it out to frame right up to the glass in the far window leaving a samll 1/4" gap & caulk some silicone between the wood framework & the glass to keep the dust on my side of the wall. Looks like it's going to be a wonderful work space. My first idea was the need to separate your shop from where other household items will be located which you have addressed. My second thought is you will need more overhead lighting. It will be fun to see your plans when the time comes. Have fun making it your special place.

Very nice! I have mine setup in groups. Table saw , bandsaw and chop saw with all cutting in 1 spot. grinding/sanding in another and then the lathe in it's own area with additional plastic hanging from the ceiling to catch some of the shavings. Have fun setting it up!
