Unfortunately, if you don't know what your are doing in the first place, all the advice is meaningless and the shoddy work will be tiled over before you know it. It's my understanding that, in Victoria, there is no requirement for waterproofing to be inspected before tiling is done and there was no waterproofing licence requirement until maybe recently. .

If he hired the guy and just expected him to do this without gecking if he knew how the it's in he guy who hired him. He could have literally just done what his guy did and told him in 5 minutes exactly how it needed doing. But if the guy got hired because he said he could do it, and he's doing stuff like this then he doesn't really know what he's doing.

This is exactly why I love inspectors. I'm a carpenter, and do the best work I can. We all have to remember when doing permits, inspections, all that stuff, that inspectors are there in the end to make sure we all do good work that lasts. Love it.

I lived brought a brand new house once it was built by Chinese, there were short cuts everywhere.

When I did waterproofing, I would scrape surfaces, hammer in any nails that were proud, sweep and typically wipe the surface with a slightly damp sponge before I would start to ensure surface was clean and level for coating. I had a very experienced boss to teach me when doing my apprenticeship.

I was in a rental property about 10 years ago and the bathrooms had to be redone. When the waterproofer, an older guy, came in we got to chatting. I got a sense that he had had enough of the game and was looking to retire but he told me that a lot of waterproofing is done poorly so that it fails and they can get more work when it needs to be redone. He wasn't joking.

i like how you give him the benefit of a doubt and teach him how to do it properly, when in 99% of cases they know exactly what they need to do but are being lazy

Are inspections like this required for the construction of most (if not all) dwellings in Australia? It's a bit frightening to live in a building which was put together by someone who's not even aware of the minimum standards.. Carpenter of 40yrs, yes wet areas need thorough attention to detail but the way you handled the situation was excellent, getting your point across without raised voices, but yes always worth spending a bit more time to get things right first time.

This is gonna sound weird, but inspectors like you would make me wanna get into this business. Like as much as I’d love to pretend to be perfect, mistakes get made, and having someone calmly and professionally explain them like this is great. And you did all this for what looks like not even actual mistakes, a sloppy spot or two is a mistake, but when the sloppiness is a consistent theme … yeah. I hope he took the criticism to heart and learns from this.

There needs to be more of this in the world. You educated him while making sure he understood it was a critical thing that needs to be done right. Being kind goes a lot further than being upset and just telling someone they did it wrong and it needs to be fixed.

Nice Job, having been an exterior weather proofer if the rainy pacific northwest United States, I can't express the importance of doing things right, and understanding how water interacts with surfaces, making sure you have the correct overlap, no backwards lap, taping vertical laps, always allowing water to escape out the bottom of things, prepping surfaces before liquid flashing and not leaving pinholes, and making sure that things like window headers always have a drip edge/flashing so that water running down a wall is not able to wrap up underneath your window header, and much more. When you see things like sideways driven rain find its way through a pinhole in the caulking around an inset window, and leave a huge puddle under the window on the inside of a building, you gain a lot more respect for waters abilities and potential to cause damage, and in turn you begin to understand just how absolutely THOROUGH you need to be when waterproofing/weatherproofing.

That's great communication and pointing out what the issues are with some resolve. I use similar compounds although I'm not a great fan of the adhesion as its not great when things are good, will b be interesting to see how these things pan out over the years.

I genuinely wish all inspectors were like you - highly knowlegeable of what to look for, and pointing out actual defects and problems that will have an impact on the integrity of the house. Sadly, a lot of inspectors only got the job because they failed trade school, and as a result only know how to nit-pick on absolutely irrelevant BS. Doubt this tradie is the actual contractor - more than likely either an apprentice or just someone working for him - but here's to hoping he learns from his mistakes.

In QLD, they don't even need insurance to operate. So when you get a dodgy inspector who say passes a leaking roof. They just claim bankruptcy, and your screwed either way. So it doesn't matter how competent they are.

What a legend of an inspector. Respectfully explaining the facts while providing solutions, literally helping this contractor grow as a tradesman. Hopefully this lad took it all on board without letting his pride get in the way of helpful well placed criticism.

My son is literally getting his bathroom done next week, we’ve done the demolition and the reason it has to be redone is because the shower leaked. The guy clearly has no idea what he’s supposed to be doing.

This is why waterproofers need to take their job seriously and not slap it on. Take pride. Treat the house as its your own, your work should be 110% spot on. Even if it takes you longer to do the job, its worth it. Take it from me, Im married to a waterproofer so I know how waterproofing should be.

Very good inspector! I argue with my clients and helpers constantly over these issues. So many people in construction are ignorant/lazy when it comes to this. I’m getting ready to part ways with a helper turned “partner” (in HIS mind) for issues just like these. We painted every stick of a cabinet in Hawaii at the beach to protect the wood. My guy had to cut some trim pieces and unlike me, didn’t prime and paint the newly exposed ends. All that effort to do a good job thrown in the trash. Really good video, and especially the pointing out how he’s saving the contractor from some extreme headaches down the road. Kudos to the contractor for being humble enough to accept the advice in a mature manner.

This inspector makes everyone a winner. The customer gets a good job done properly, the contractor learns how to do it right and becomes a good tradesman. The builders get a good reputation. No one likes their work criticised, but it's the only way to stop mistakes in the future.

Dont wear your shoes on a waterproofed surface, you should be in your socks to ensure you dont have any sharp objects stuck in your boots, because if u do, all your doing is putting pin holes all through the waterproofing

By the looks of what he found, it needed another coat of the waterproofing everywhere anyway.

OMG, I wish you were in NSW and could show the company who did our waterproofing how shoddy they are. The waterproofing failed and leaked to our downstairs roof. Angles are not compliant, substrate was not adequate. It has ruined our bathroom floor which needs to be replaced. They denied liability. So glad these people had you to intervene to prevent this happening to them.

Good job bro. When i was learning to do bathroom renovations by 2 licensed "BR renovators" i was pressured to cut corners with the h2oproffing. I never did cut corners & did not like that. 1 got rid of me because i was a straight shooter😊. In the end i got my required experience & became a minor builder/bathroom n laundry licensed operator 🎉in Sydney.

Great job, i see you are helping the contractor so in the future he can avoid any trouble or he could be sued possibly or other legal ramifications. Also by not installing product as instructed by the manufacturer he could void the warranty of the product installed. Found in my house on the ends of my interior doors it says, "warranty void if not sealed" so i will do it myself. In bathrooms MDF baseboard not caulked at the floor, i will do it myself. They used bugle construction screws to connect metal gutters to the house, wrong screws, i will change those myself. Thanks for these videos mate, now i know what to look for. My house isn't new though but i had it modernized and renovated inside. Cheers from Alberta Canada.

I like how the this young waterproofer seems to listen to the inspector, hope he learns more from this. at least he did put waterstop there. There are some builders out there who build new homes and didnt even bother to put waterstop on shower area and on the doorway to bathroom and just put a silicon sealant instead.

I get the impression theyre totally aware of the non compliant defects theyre leaving at sights. In order to fulfil their work to a compliant level it must just be an extrapain in the arse or cost them a lot more in labour. So they leave it until theyre caught and face zero consequences as per usual

Yeah but if done right properly it probably would only have taken an hour longer and saved thousands of dollars to the company and owner

Well nobody wants to do this kind of work as it is. And the way it’s structured in an optimal environment you have an experienced tradesman paired with a fresh guy who knows little or nothing about construction. It works if the experienced person is given the time and has the drive to pass along what they know to the new individual, and you hope that it’s good information. Some areas require schooling and some don’t but more consistent regulation would probably be beneficial to cut down on hack jobs.

Its easy, once you know how to do it! But with the amount of waterproofing failures, it seems to be hard to learn. - Nice teaching in this video!

Haha, hard to learn, you made me laugh, i sell a range of polyurethane and epoxy waterproofing products, it certainly is not hard to learn. This all laziness

All the mistakes were the same. That contractor did not know their business. Many contractors don't really know what they are doing unfortunately!

Your videos are educational with practical examples. Australian Standards should be upheld.

Waterproofing is very different pending location - fascinating.

What surprises me is good builders are absolutely pedantic about waterproofing. I've had two bathrooms done and both builders wanted to employ high quality water proofers so they wouldn't have issues down the track. Builders don't want to have replace bathrooms due to dodgy water proofing. Im shocked builders aren't supervising the waterproofing. In my two jobs both builders checked the water proofing thoroughly. Similarly although I didn't know what to look for the water proofing looked really well done. Its not rocket science you need to form a tub like structure with the waterproofing so the water has nowhere to go.
