Turning the BEAST! - Woodturning a very challenging oak burl

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Some pieces of wood scream potential, and this one screamed so loud it nearly left my lathe in pieces. This Beastly Oak Burl, packed with imperfections and promise, was a real challenge, and only you can be the judge on whether I failed or not. A real woodturning challenge.

Very nice work, Mike. I started turning in 1978 or 9. At that point in time, in my area, guys wore safety glasses, and that was it, not even dust masks and no dust collection system. Around 5 years ago, I finally started wearing a dust mask the whole time I'm turning, not just when I am sanding. I have a large dust collection system, so I never saw the need. A few months ago, my mom and my wife got together and bought me a Laguna revo 1836evs with a 2 hp motor. Now, at last, because of the power this lathe has, I am wearing a face shield while turning and sanding. It threw a 30 plus pound chunk of wood across my shop when a tenon failed and that made a big impression on me. I feel that anyone watching your channel should be able to see the ppe you are utilizing. I do not like the safety police. Your safety should be your concern not anyone else's. We are not working in a factory setting where codes and standards must be met. Most of us who have been turning for a long time have been very slow to integrate ppe into our turning. That's our fault or privilege. I think it is great that you newer turners are much more concerned with your personal safty. Thank you for being a good example to the long time turners and the newer turners. This old cooter thinks you do a very nice job with your channel Mike.

I vote for a full safety video. I think even if you've been turning forever it doesn't hurt to have a reminder. Industry does it, the military does it, retail and restaurants do it, and we should too. Cool bowl by the way.

What saved the bowl for me is the incredible Grain which is displayed. I also think the chip flying of was a blessing in disguise as it transformed the bowl into something a bit more unique than what might have been the original end result. Nice work, Nice Bowl.

Hello Mike, I think you have a new fan - my dog! She heard your dog barking, came over and stayed for the rest of the video. I think she has good taste! And the bowl is really lovely. I thought it had a real “60’s” look in the shaping you gave it. I suspect you are far too young to remember The Jetsons, but that’s what the shape reminded me of; that futuristic space vision that we were all going to be living in the next century! 🤔 As always, I hope you have a good week and I will look forward to your next “space adventure”.

The wood decided. Very nice piece Mike. At this time last year, I was effectively blind, cataracts. All my life I've done things that require various levels of protection: woodwork, welding, motorcycles, firearms... The list is long. After getting my vision back, I realized I wasn't always as safe as I should have been. I have the same face shield you were using before. I upgraded months ago. A safety video is a good idea. As a biker, I believe in ATGATT; all the gear all the time. Good luck, mate.

As always, I appreciate your design skills and your ability to take 'design opportunities' as they arise! Another lovely bowl (of course!) As to safety tips/ PPE, I think a bespoke video of what you have learned from/ with JSP would be very useful; like many, I am sure, I have probably forgotten far too much/ have developed bad habits and, in any event, everyone can benefit from relevant reminders; on which point, the 'as and when it arises' approach in all videos would not go amiss. Keep up the good work, Mike, every day is a learning day, however experienced (or not!) one is, and you have such a wonderful delivery and approach to turning, in no time the 'safety tips' will be blending in with the turning.

A gorgeous bowl indeed Mike ❤I love the edge, the spiral design gives the piece an interesting touch. A Very tactile effect I have the need to hold it! 😂😂😊 the safety PPE should be a dedicated video this way teaching the Importance of Safety while working. If little bits are 😂added in 1 video then the safety wouldn’t appear as essential. ❤ x

I think that spiral solution was brilliant! I was a tad doubtful when you first described it but it turned out extremely beautiful! As for PPE, I think a dedicated video would be great so people (newbies as well as experienced turners) could refer back to it using the search function. I also think any new topic regarding safety you discover as time goes on would be great to hear and you could just mention the dedicated PPE at the same time. Thanks for another beautiful piece and entertaining vid, Mike!
