Happened to my 17year old Honda. She was good to me 😢
I have a 2006 Toyota tundra extended cab not the crew cab the suicide doors but it has 316,000 miles on it. AC blows cold no chicken engine light and only leaks a tiny bit of oil out of the valve cover gaskets it’s lifted on King coil over in the frontand fox in the back this truck is such a beast. I love it.
Bilstein 5100 a great shock for this price range.. I have the 6112 and 5160, very satisfied, Note I never did experience Fox, icons, kings and the many others.. Shock Surplus gives great reviews…
Weight difference between the two would have fuel mileage implications. Im shopping for my next set of tires for my 2.7l TurboMax Silverado. Currently running Michelin ltx defenders which are ~40lbs and the AT tires ive been looking at are between 43 and 53 lbs. Since 99% of my driving is on the road, fuel mileage, noise, and rain/snow performance are more important than off road traction; I figure any good quality AT tire will be better off road than the defenders. Im currently waffling between the rubitrek and the cooper at3 4s in one size taller than stock, 265/70r18. The Falken Rubitrek is about 46 lbs, while the Cooper AT3 4S is about 41 lbs.
Yeah....Weekend Traffic.
idk if im just lucky, but i looked for mine for quite a while and finally got one 3 years ago from a ford dealership at 86k miles (now at 128k) & my 2004 sr5 (dc) 4x4 has key fob (2 oem actually plus another with remote start from previous owner), heated cloth seats, heated mirrors, compass/thermometer, 4.10 LSD, $20 fm transmitter for music&phone charging thru cig lighter (works great with the stock radio and JBL speakers) but Im just getting defensive Lol
Sounds like a great pickup!
I bought my 04 20 years ago in April. 167,000 miles. All of the required maintenance done at the required times. After 20 years and now being retired, I am fixing it up. Had a kid come up to me last week while on a trip, "Sick Build Bro!!!" Wanted pics for his Instagram page.
That’s awesome!! Love it
@@208Tyler My good friend has a BMW 2002... Same deal.. "Sick car Bro!" He was laughing.. "Now its your turn"
5100's ride like a Forklift. Why waste money on something that rides like sht. Then have to buy a quality coilover and spend and all the time and money to do it properly. Cry once and do it properly. Op is obviously getting kickbacks from Bilstein. Worst riding suspension ever!
I am not sponsored by Bilstein. I have to disclose sponsorships or product placements. I’ve never even been contacted by them. Perhaps Bilstein ran poorly on your specific application. For me, they’ve always delivered performance proportional to their price, and they’re great for beginners. You don’t need to spend a lot to go camping/overlanding
Beautiful Day in Idaho. I'm taking the Toyota Tundra Ivan Stewart Signature Edition out too.
Awesome!
Yep, you did not need to do all that. 2wd that crossing has a solid gravel base.
No, the base is mostly dirt.
Same with 2001 IS300
Nothing wrong with the ball joint or the suspension design; the problem is that some owners think this is a non-maintenance item.
To be clear, the ball joint “fails” at a normal interval for a ball joint to be replaced. However, I will not defend it as a good design. It unnecessarily jeopardizes people’s lives by failing in that manner. I could push a ball joint on a 2nd Gen tundra or tacoma to the same point and just be left with unevenly wearing tires and poor handling. There’s no good reason to design the ball joint the way Toyota did, which is why Toyota ditched this setup for all vehicles that came after. Losing control or rolling your vehicle isn’t some kind of just punishment for neglecting a little maintenance.
2005 Toyota tundra I tow gooseneck trailer 15000
I have 2002 4Runner and I called Toyota dealer and they said that it is not a recall but they sell a recall part that cost 189$ for 2 lower ball joint replacement isn’t free.
Replacement is or isn’t free depending on vehicle and dealership. There were recalls for certain vehicles
So 👎 your complaining about all the things that you're going to run into when buying a used vehicle. And then you 😑 go right into selling your sponsors. You should buy a new truck and leave the used Toyotas to us 👌
You’re misunderstanding the video. I love my tundra, and I would recommend it as a great pickup. I made this video as a way to inform current and potential owners of what they might run into, or what to avoid in a potential purchase. These “5 reasons” to not buy a tundra are, in my opinion, weak reasons, or legitimate reasons that apply to a small portion of people
Put them on my thumbnail vehicle and they’ve been great so far. It’s incredible how little info/reviews there are out there. Glad i took the risk with a relatively unknown tire.
Glad to hear they’re treating you good!
A nephew of mine actually died from this failure
That is awful to hear. I’m sorry for your loss
You should have bought a tundra with the 5vz-fe. I get 400 miles or more every tank. I have zero issues. Yes I replaced ball joints and timing belt but overall this is the best truck you can buy. Low maintenance and dependability. You are dramatically misleading people. Go buy a dodge you’ll be happier 😂
You’re misunderstanding this video. I LOVE the first Gen tundra. It’s a great pickup that I highly recommend. These are the top 5 reasons not to buy one, and I think they’re pretty weak reasons. I’ve had a 3.4 in a 4runner and driven my brothers taco with it, I’ll take the 4.7
Yep just get the OEM and keep up with vehicle maintenance. 👍 Over all the 1gen tundra is a killer.
Truly love watching all of your videos.I seem to be watching them over and over again.Keep up the good work keep putting out videos..
Thank you! I really appreciate it
I could care less!!! That 4.7 is the only reason I need to buy lol
You’re not gonna hear me disagree. This was a tough video to make, there’s not a lot of things to criticize about the truck, and impressive that this was Toyotas first full size offering
I love my first gen tundra. I am hyper focused on any maintenance and it takes care of me.
That’s the best way to be!
What about early Lexus GX470 that's what I want next creature comforts and dependable they look tough too
Great vehicle! No ball joint issues, same drivetrain as the first Gen. Really solid vehicles
6th reason: Don't buy it to keep the price down so I can snatch it.
Hahaha
😂
What crimp butt connectors did you get? I didnt see that listed, and i was surprised at how many different kinds there were
Too late... :) I've owned my 2002 for about a year and 4 months. It had a TON of work done to it prior though. I absolutely love it.
I love mine too! Glad you’re is treating you good
Great video, Spot on! But when you have a rust free first gen Tundra, addressed those few flaws correctly and your comfortable with dealing without the new technology stuff, you will have a darn good work horse for a pretty long time. It won't let you down.
Absolutely. There’s so little to worry about on these pickups, especially rust free ones
I’d mention how finicky the ECU can be. Small Evap leak? Would be a shame if I turned off your VSC, TRAC off and threw a CEL.
Hmm. I don’t have any of those systems, and I can’t say I hear a lot of people complaining about them.
Many years of working on the road this is the only truck I've seen go 600k on original motor and trans....
They’re really good pickups. In general it’s hard to find problems with them
Not transmission. Got '01 Toyota Tundra Ivan Stewart Signature Edition at 208K. Bought and replaced used transmission.
4WD too.
The first couple years of the FGT did have a transmission recall. They the design from there after though. And my original trans is still fine at 235k
Dang I get 21 mpg going 60 mph. 19ish if i go 70-75 mph
That’s impressive. Stock, V8? What elevation do you live/drive at?
Really? I've never got any better than 14 mpg on my 4.7 L v8
@@208Tyler about 1800 ft and bone stock. 159,000 miles as of now. I baby this thing too. Conservative tires as well.
Good to know! I think I’m hampered a little by weight/aerodynamics, and slightly larger tires. At 2600’ typically and most highway drives take me up higher in elevation.
@@208Tyler okay I gotcha. Yeah this was under best conditions. Relatively flat stretches of highway, no mountains. City driving my mpg takes a dump. Especially short frequent drives where the engine cools between stops. I wanted the best possible mpg measured so I can keep track of engine health over time.
Tyler, thanks for sharing. Please add chapters to your upcoming videos so the promo ad can be skipped.
Noted!
I've owned my 2000 for almost 20 years. It was off the line 25 years ago next month. Everything you said was on point.
That’s awesome!
Interesting. My 2000 tundra says mfgr date 04/99
@@Jeff-sp7bg First month of production.
Hay Tyler….. are you still liking those rubitrek? Im getting ready to buy new tires for my 1500 ram. Any regrets?
Yup, still liking them! Really good tire for a daily driver imo
I have a 2023 Tacoma SR AC 4 cylinder 4x4. The stock suspension feels a bit firm to me. Would a set of 5100’s soften up the ride?
They might, depending on the spring you choose to use.
1st gen Tundra pretty much a wider Tacoma
No
@@208Tyler yes it is, same rear axle just wider on Tundra same ball joints ,same A-arms, Tundra became it's own truck on the 2nd gen,
@@perdedor319 just ignore the different engine, transmission, transfer case, cab configuration, and bed sizes then…? Lol
@@208Tyler just ignore the fact that you can put the V8 in the tacoma and 4runner and maybe even the 4th gen 4runner, ohhh wait the 4th gen 4runner did give you a choice to get the V8 😆😆😆😆😆
@@perdedor319 I thought we were talking about the Taco? Now you want to say the 4runner is the same as the Tundra?
Does your tundra have diff locks?
No
Greatt advice
Thanks!
Hey good review. It's nice to see this gen Pathfinder honest review. I own an '06 G35 Sedan 6MT and I love it. I know the VQ35 burns oil and I check and refill as needed. I got it with 98k 10 years ago in 2014. It now has 190k and I'm still loving the car. I also own a '00 4Runner SR5 4wd with the Magnusen SC. I love the Runner too but have been chasing a misfire for the last 4 months. I'm not giving up on the Runner and will get if fixed. However, I've always liked the look of these Pathfinders since I was in middle school and they were new. Also like the hardbody PF. Anyways thanks for the info and I will continue to find a Pathfinder R50 to drive on road trips and I can do a comparison between my '00 4Runner and the Pathy.
A 6 speed would be so much fun with a VQ. Good luck with your 4x4’s
Early to Md 00’s Toyota / Lexus had a lot of suspension system problems lol.
Other than this ball joint issue, I can’t think of any….
kachow :(
THEAR NO GOOD JANKS AKA I DON'T LIKAM ATAII 😂😱😱😱
Get a snorkel or air box extender so you dont accidentally suck up water from intake and hydrolock engine for deeper crossings. Ohh and make sure diff breather is extended too
About to start this process on my 2012 Tacoma TRD Off Road.
Awesome! Good luck with the install
At 208000 and just checked them omg. Ty
Love the Tacoma🔥
The tundra? Thanks!
Bro so thought that was a Tacoma but I also didn’t watch the whole video
I've had an '02 for the last ten years. 3.4 V6 with a five speed manual. Best pickup ever made.
I like the logic behind this but keep in mind the cost of used vehicles has gone way way way up, especially toyota platform's, I bought my 2004 double cab tundra for $8,400 back in 2019 with 170,000 miles, sold it in 2023 with 215,000 miles for $16,000 and all I did was a timing belt kit, ICON coilovers and basic prerunner bumper on it all done by myself so no shop labor prices, less then $4K in upgrades, I got all my money hack and more.
The rising cost of used vehicles lags the cost of new vehicles and the increase in interest paid/loan terms as far as I can tell. If that’s the case, this only makes more sense given the current market.
It only works if someone has $10+K saved to spend on a used car, most Americans are struggling to survive due to increased rents, out of control utility bills and food prices that outweigh even eating anymore, im just pointing out the facts here thanks to to uncle Joe, most Americans make just enough to stay afloat and not save a dollar, car payments for them make sense or a cheap car like a 98 honda civic, not a 2000+ tacoma, tundra or 4runner, where its gona cost you $10k to make the magic happen, I understand 100% these 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen yotas are a great platform to get into, I myself still own a 2008 Lexus GX470 with a 140K miles on it but im just saying not everyone had the pocketbook or savings to spend to get a older yota with 200+k miles on it, keep the dream alive I say and if your selling a yota platform vehicle make it affordable for the next guy, your passing on a legacy that creates memories and not just a dream.
Lost my left lower ball joint on my 3rd gen 4Runner just as I was coming to a stop at the beginning of a highway. Had I been forward 10 more feet I could have been t-boned. Luckily I was 1 mile from my house and I was only doing about 3 mph when it let go.
Not on my wd21! So far..
Might make it easier to apply brakes but it definitely doesn't stop faster, for the reason you mentioned, rolling resistance.
Here in Olympia WA every moron with a light bar turns it on when it rains. We have street lights but they still turn on those damn light-bars. Morons.
