In addition to the sledgehammer you could also use the way a child on a swing has that slight pause or coming to rest before changing direction.

Love this, I shift weight forward to my lead side…then use that momentum to push of and throw the club into my backswing before catching it and throwing it towards my target

I notice with the hammer your left wrist is flat at the top but with two hands on the club your left wrist is cupped. I’ve heard you say a cupped wrist is anatomically correct but all I ever hear is the left wrist should be flat.

I’m curious what Sav and Mu’s handicaps are. There’s golf swing on the range and then there’s golf. I find the hardest thing is bringing the range swing to the course.

Sav has a 1.3 index, she breaks 80 from the back tees at 6900 yards regularly; Mu is now a solid 6 and closing in on mid 70’s scores!

I found a very interesting observation by myself. Bad swings, if the shoulders are somehow stiff, mostly a shorter fly and bad feeling swing. Then I command myself to relax. The shoulders and the arms and the club feeling like lowering 1-2 cm. Means, tension disappears, everything is a little more hanging down. Relaxing the arms, they are getting ‚ longer‘. If so, most times the result is much better. I often wonder, what, that far, I did nothing, just let it go. I am vintage 1962 and still can perform 110-115 mph.

We have a series on our premium channel called the “pre-motor cortex series” which shows how having the right task and the right feel to execute the task BEFORE you take the swing makes a massive difference. Example: See the ball and hit the ball hard (ouch) vs Use the weight of the arm-club unit and gather some nice momentum to whip through the ball with velocity and ease.

Hey Shawn, do you still have the WIG forum? I ask bc I haven’t been on it in a minute and I want others out there to know about it if you do. It use to be the best resource available for those wanting to follow Shawn’s instruction beyond KZread. You were surrounded by Shawn’s students and it paid dividends for me personally, before being able to meet Shawn and have some private lessons.

I start the swing by moving the club at the ball before taking it back. That's how I get the tension out and let the club track on it's natural arc.

Shawn... I owe you an apology... Let me explain.. I've been watching your videos for years... almost a decade.. I always liked you and what you were teaching and have been trying to implement your methods for some time now. I would go days and hit the ball well and then lose it... I would get frustrated and try and try again. I would compliment your videos and then I would criticize certain aspect when things weren't working for me (I know, selfish, right?)... Mostly compliment but out of frustration, I would be critical. I would question your ideas and there were days I didn't think you knew what you were talking about. Now to give you context, I'm in my early 40s. I've been playing golf since I was 14. I've never been a great golfer or a consistent golfer, definitely not a good ball striker.. One time, in a high school event, we played 9 holes and I hit 1 green in regulation and shot even par with a chip in for birdie... just survival mode the whole way.. . i played college golf for a year as a walk on, had some success, won a few small, local tournaments, but never felt like i had control of my swing. . I've always had good hand-eye coordination but am not real athletic or flexible. I love golf, I'm obsessed with the golf swing and all it's nuances.. I just never had that 'breakthrough' moment, until 6 weeks ago. I was out at the range, hacking away as usual, and was trying to implement some things you said, when 'voila'. it hit me.. and i've hit the ball EXACTLY how i want since then. I set up to the ball, tilt my left hip forward, pull my head away from my left shoulder so it's almost over my right foot, and then do a slight tilt. I almost feel like I'm creating a WIDER diagonal between my left hip and right shoulder (at least, that's the best way I can explain the feeling) Then.. I just turn around that diagonal and strike the ball, with the INTENTION of hitting the ball to a spot 10 feet in front me. I think my head was always too centered between my shoulders and i probably wasn't creating enough tilt (honestly it feels like more of the former, than the latter). Pulling that head over my right foot has been a game changer!! You talk about 10-15 degrees of right cheek away and 10-15 degrees of right cheek down (so the right ear is lower than the left ear) is key, but i ALSO move my head away from my left shoulder, so I'm extending the muscles in the left side of my neck and really freeing up my left shoulder! and i've been crushing the ball! Now, here is the REALLY weird thing.. You've always had that slight pause at the top of the backswing and I never could figure out how you did that.. My swing, especially transition, always felt fast or rushed. and I just could never slow it down without everything collapsing... . but for some reason, when i get into this 'longer diagonal' set up position.. I turn BETTER, I move EASIER, and I can PAUSE that backswing at the top as long as I want... it is AWESOME!... I get into that setup position, and i literally feel like I'm swinging a heavy axe around my body.. not an axe.. a HEAVY axe.. that was my 'AH HA' moment, my friend!!! THAT is when I knew I had it!! i've been to the driving range 20 times in the past 6 weeks and I hit the ball exactly where I want, solid strike, and about 10-15 yards longer with irons and 15-20 yards longer with driver with so much more compression. The ball flight is 50% higher than in the past (probably because I was still able to deloft the club, was was steep and/or narrow coming in). ... So, I just want to say THANK YOU, and I will forever be a believer in your method!! I haven't mastered everything, but damn dude.. it has been such a long road and I am so excited to get to play in a few weeks and take this to the course.. Thanks Shawn.. one last question if you don't mind.. Did you teach yourself this method? Did someone else teach you? Is it a combination? Where did this come from? Just curious. Best to you!

Hey hey! Nice comment! Nice ah-ha moment that is definitely a culmination of all the hard work; your brain is an amazing tool and it will work for you more than you know! My “method” is “your method”. It started with the good Ol’ Canadian Ski Patrol and their awesome first responders courses. This is where I fell in love with human anatomy. Saw what they were teaching in golf, which was my true passion at 17 as a top 10 junior in my state, and looked at the Human Anatomy, and did not see it at all; had to go from scratch but with a good wealth of experience from my top junior and amateur golf. Then add you guys; what was working and what was not and without you guys, I would be nowhere. This is why I your comment is gold; so I want to thank you for your contribution to the mission and keep sending people this way with your story! The more golfers enjoy the game like this, the healthier the game will be!

I’m still trying to get the right amount of side bend and keep my head behind the ball. I’ve had a few really good shots on my Garmin R10 in my garage trying this. I’ve been getting 7 irons (‘23 P790 w reg flex 95g shaft) to carry btwn 165 & 172yds on good contact. My ball speed is btwn 112 & 115mph but my club head speed is btwn 80 & 82mph. My peak height is only 78-85 feet…trying to get it a bit higher for better decent angle (currently around 39-43 degrees) I’m working on getting my carry to be about 170yds consistently. Thank you for putting out educational videos like this. I’m 56yrs old and hitting the ball better than I have in 20 yrs.

Hey Shawn, I’ve been watching for over ten years and thought I’d share a major insight I had during a range session today. I’ve heard you emphasize having a firmer grip pressure in the past, but it occurred to me today that my grip pressure was too soft, especially at the top of the swing. I realized that my club face was actually hanging slightly open because my grip was slightly collapsing at the top from lack of grip pressure. In the through swing, I could feel it hanging slightly open through impact as well, even with a very strong grip. I started gripping the club tighter and could feel that taughtness in the lead arm you’ve mentioned feeling with a square club face. That taughtness is key because it’s what keeps the club from falling toe down and therefore open! An open club face makes the club feel lighter and therefore makes you feel like you can swing faster, a counter productive sensation. I started hitting a very powerful slight draw with a much weaker grip after I started severely hooking with my previously stronger grip after gripping it tighter. I could feel how the club face actually squares up much more emphatically with a tighter grip pressure, the opposite of what traditional instruction would have me believe with “holding it like a bird”. I thought this was a worthy insight to share because it made a massive difference for me and I’m sure it would for others as well. You’re the best teacher out there and don’t get the recognition you deserve!
