I never knew that mesh tape required fast-setting compound. Always used regular compound and never seen cracks. But just a homeowner who has restored several rooms and a new addition.

Plaster of Paris is Gypsum powder which has been heated to drive off the water. It reacts with water in sort of a chemical reaction (hydration) to become hard without shrinking appreciably. But you have less than 10 min to use it. Joint compound is just Gypsum in water, like clay, and similarly dries over ~24 hr. Like clay, it shrinks. I suspect the "hotter" joint compounds are just different fractions of Plaster of Paris mixed with regular Gypsum powder.

MY Grandpa was born in 18886 on a 300 acre horse, mule and donkey raising farm.Around the house yard my kin put buckets with 6"+ of water to give the lil bloodsuckers a place to lay eggs and then every 3-4 days one of the kids would dump 'em out and replace it. They put a screen over the rain water barrels. They had Martin bird houses and in the evening the Martins would soar and dive overhead feasting on skeeters, etc. I was born in a neighborhood built around 1900 and every yard had Martin houses and on the houses as well. The more modern thinking city council DDTed the bugs in the late 1950's and the bird houses became EMPTY and were removed over the following 10 yrs as eyesoars.

It’s great information but I will suggest to start by just removing carefully a little piece and send it to a lab. Most if not all popcorn ceiling from the 89s or before has asbestos which inhaled can cause cancer so you will need a professional company with special equipment to remove it . Don’t risk your health
