I love science experiments on tools, paints, mud, etc. I've heard so many things that turned out to be dead wrong / not accurate.

If I have to back a hole before filling, I'll cut a piece of drywall small enough to fit through the hole, but with some overlap. Then put some "fast tack" adhesive on the overlap, and pull it against the back of the existing wall. When the adhesive "cures" well enough (about 15 minutes), fill it with hot mud. Works like a charm! After that primer and two coats of paint...

Hot mud IS stronger. It also depends on your choice of anchor. Some are a lot stronger than others. The “Vancouver Carpenter” did a test with different anchors.

Dealt with this very issue with two towel racks. Drywall mud may be stronger than drywall, but screwing in an anchor can chunk out your mud, the weak point being where the mud connects to the hole in the drywall. I had success by putting the anchor into the WET mud and letting it all dry before screwing the screw into the anchor.

Actually I tested before the strength of the mud anchoring to the drywall and when you fill it in completely like this it does not let go from the drywall. You will break something before that happens which is what I did. And as for Chunking out the mud, Yes I mentioned that in the video that you should pre-drill the hole or use a different type of anchor. But even with the chunked out mud in my video it was still a lot stronger.

Great timing! I have to repair a seam in the ceiling of our guest room. The trick: there is no joist behind it! Of course, it has already cracked out from wall to wall, and attic access is a nightmare. I have tried regular mud with mesh tape... 'nuff said. Tomorrow I will clean the wound back to firm drywall and get to it with hot mud. All I have here is 20 minute mud, but I think I can do it if I get my son to mix up more smallish batches as I go along. My plan is to screw USG drywall repair clips to the two pieces to stabilize and align them, and to use mesh tape on the seam.

Great test! I always wondered what the strength difference would be if an anchor blowout was patched with just hot mud and re-anchored.

Hello kilted guy, just wanted to say thank you, today you showed me how to keep the paper tape sealed to the mud...not "floating loose" above the bed of mud, thank you again!
