Thanks for the extra education, im doing a bathroom about half the ceiling and everything behind the shower wall where plumbing is. The shower neck cracked behind the wall and was leaking for years. And to add injury the roof was leaking from somewhere and the water accumulated about 16 inches in above the shower neck.. So it comes down to a complete remodel, including floor, shower door, tile, toilet and havent made up my mind on the type of material for the flooring.

Hey guy do you live in a cold area? Right now I’m doing a parking garage that is open and the lids are finished drywall. Any idea if it’s ok to hot mud just to cover the gaps until the weather warms up. If you ever get time you should try make a video on hot mud in freezing temps and thaw to see if it’s possible to do. Anyways thought I’d see what you think.

ive been avoiding repairing a water damaged bathroom ceiling in a doublewide. roof is repaired so leak is fixed but ceiling looks awful

Thanks! I have a repair to do like this (but no 2nd layer above). But how do you keep that drywall dust out if your eyes? I've tried goggles, safety glasses.. but then I can't see what I'm doing 😢

Sounds like you were looking straight up at the tool.. I've cut a lot of drywall like this just using my regular glasses. 🤷‍♂ Get your eyes/head up a little closer to the ceiling and away from the cut, then the dust falls down and away. Can be helpful have a helper hold a shopvac for you near the cut.

If you watch from about 11 minutes I did put backer on each side. Repairs don’t have to have backer on four sides. Look at how new drywall is hung. The long recessed joints have 16 to 24 inch spans where there’s no backing on the joint at all and it works fine

Guy, I've just done this same job. Replaced an approx 18" square section of sagging ceiling (from a roof leak). Probably should have gone out further, b/c its been a bit difficult to blend in the patch of new drywall with the older surrounding stuff, as it still has a bit of a sag. For my first thick / evening coat of joint compound after taping, it didn't come out very smooth or even :- / . Is it better to A) sand out the imperfections (small gouges, scratches, ripples, etc) then lay on a third coat, or instead B) lay on the third coat, filling in and evening the defects, then sand everything afterwards? Thanks!

Sand off any excess, and float it out wide enough to make it not show

@ThatKiltedGuyDIY ok, I'll try that. I'd seen some suggestions on other channels to not try patching after sanding, as the patch would be more visible afterwards because the density of the patch would usually be harder than the sanded 1st coat (unless applied very lightly). It makes sense then to not try to match the patch to the 1st coat (and feather it in to blend by sanding), vs simply layering on enough additional material to actually "float" out the whole section at once (by going out even further with the whole area/section, not just patching the issues with the 1st coat).
