    at 5:30 you talked about flat cable width or so, and you also mentioned it is your own opinion, I googled it and saw the image of a flat cable measured the other way, instead of 0.17", it was 0.41" x5 times 2.05" radius or 4.1" diameter. www.google.com/search?q=NEC+bending+radius+reason&rlz=1C1RXQR_enUS1041US1041&oq=NEC+bending+radius+reason&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIHCAEQIRigATIHCAIQIRigAdIBCTE2MDc0ajBqOagCALACAQ&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#vhid=7xqPNWtXU2FZGM&vssid=l Thanks for your great conversation! Just last week I ran into this, and like you said every 3rd breaker slot was empty. There is one set of wires from the pole connecting to two heads with two separate line sets going down to separate disconnects. But one panel has the orange, center, high leg fuse missing, then at the two panels they lead to it changes to the C phase, and is marked high leg orange. Is anything different as far as bonding neutral to ground, at the first panel only? Reason I ask is one of the sub panels has a sticker saying it would need an isolation kit to separate grounds from neutrals, and both were attached to same screw terminals. Wondering too about balancing the phases, thought I’d connect all the 240v HVAC units and ovens etc that are truly 240v, meaning no neutrals to the high leg to try to balance things, but not sure if I should or if I should just keep not using the high leg. I’m doing what I can before the electricians come in.

    Ryan, just throwing this out there......if a home has a blank island that has no outlets on it and someone decides they wanted to cook/prep/etc on this island, why does it seem like there would be some that would use an extension cord plugged into backsplash outlet above base kitchen cabinets, draped across the walking space to the island so they could now have power on said island. Seems like this new island code would promote something like this that would be even more of a danger.

    I would put a USB type C receptacle under the countertop. That way, no cooking equipment can be plugged there but still can be used to charge devices. Also, the homeowners can still change it to a regular receptacle if they wish so later.

    Thanks for the three hour rule explanation for continuous operation. I upgraded my built in non-plugged electric furnace air handler to a 5 ton from a 3.5 ton and it had a 100 amp breaker. We put a current meter on it and it read 82 amps on high. It is a 2 speed, 42/82 amps. The 2 amps is for the blower motor. We were uncertain about the definition of continuous load until I watched your video. The heater will never be on high for three straight hours.

    Let's say I only have a # 8 conductor in my van, for a 30 amp circuit. Do I HAVE to upsize the EGC because I upsized my current carriers? (NEC should say "current carriers instead of ungrounded conductors, because if I increase size for voltage drop I will increase the neutral/grounded conductor as well)

  • @RyanJacksonElectrical
    @RyanJacksonElectrical12 күн бұрын

    Yes. The argument has long been that increasing the size of the ungrounded conductor yields higher fault current and, therefore, could damage the EGC. So it isn't just a voltage drop issue. Although I'm not convinced, personally.

  • @workct4102
    @workct41027 күн бұрын

    @@RyanJacksonElectrical yeah...it makes no sense seeing as the code specifically states there is NO need to increase EGC for conductor fill or temperature adjustments. Then the EGC is good enough. This code needs to be changed....otherwise I will omit the EGC and use the conduit and be compliant.

    at 2:30 if it addresses the space needing to be habitable /and/ occupiable it should read that, using /or/ makes it read nearly the same as the old code per your interpretation of it being habitable for storage. /or/ just get rid of the ink 'habitable or' and make it for 'adaptable for future occupiable space'

    your and the cmp' rationale at 13 minutes has to be incorrect otherwise a gfci (or gfpe) would be required for hardwired appliances within 6 feet of the sink bowl. it doesn't matter if your touching the appliance for hardwired applications why is it different for cord and plug?

  • @RyanJacksonElectrical

    That is the rationale. I would direct you to the first and second drafts of the 2023 NEC. If you think it whould apply to hard-wired equipment, you should make a proposal.

    This was by far one of the best 'code reviews' and descriptions, that isn't just a 'yes / no' but a good reading of it and a 'human' explanation that you can follow with out questioning you Ryan, it allows the viewer to say "Ahhhh I got you, and I understand" rather then the yes/no stuff. Thanks, now with a few screen shots I can tell other friends info..... we were chatting about it the other day because of a situation exactly the dishwasher and garbage disposer (👍) is each on their own 20 amp circuit, and they aren't even on the same tandem breaker. 😳 They are on 2 completely different tandem breakers 6A and 8A and the B's on each are 'spares'..... WTH????? So thanks for this and I shall be looking at more from you.👍

    I disagree with the too high of a value motor amps when connecting 2, 4 or 6 pole plain jane Nema frame motors that in my 50 years as a commercial electrician covered over 99% of installtions. Of the thousands of motors that I have replaced, moved, installed or PM'ed never came across a single motor that was within 10% of the NEC ampere. Just went 125% of the motor FLA & if a long run would calculate voltage drop and would increase wire size if needed. We had AHU'S that had two 60 to 125 HP motors where both supply motors ran 24/7 but seldom over 50% of full speed and on VFD'S. I could run over 1200 amps of AHU motors from a 800 amp distribution panel for 50 years snd never trip out the 800 amp breaker because of constant reduced speeds feed from VFD'S. Only time a supply motor ran close to full speed was when other motor was down for PM or rare replacement.

    59:58 LOL I used glass tubes flared at the ends and coffee filters to hold the plant matter. The funny part is before we bought the house they improved the wiring and extraction because he wanted to paint cars. It worked out great because not only did I do that but I am a glass blower so I also have a liquid O2 tank and 100lb propane tanks outside of the shop. I try my best to be safe and so far knock on wood I've never had an incident. Unless you count getting burned by hot glass.

    Can you just put gfci breaker in main panel instead of multiple gfci outlets ?

  • @RyanJacksonElectrical
    @RyanJacksonElectrical24 күн бұрын

    Yes, although the total leakage current of all combined circuits would need to be less than 4-6mA, otherwise the breaker would trip. That could work, but it also may not work for a given application.

    Since rebar does not come in 1000' lengths (usually max 60'), the sections of rebar would have to be electrically connected together, not just touching with a piece of rebar wire tie around them. Also, unlike a water line whose location is well known and makes a huge mess when it is cut, someone could core or cut into the concrete right through the piece of rebar that is being used as the grounding conductor and never be the wiser.
