This is a good rule. Seems like a no brainer and am surprised that it took this long to be enacted.

Apparently many pool equipment installers don’t know this. I’m told that the installers for Leslie’s, e.g., replace “like with like” _electrically_ and that’s all they’re permitted to do, when they replace a pump. So they might be committing a great many code violations. I hope this is less common. Yes, having pool equipment not GFCI-protected is a deliriously bad idea.

Worked 50 enjoyable years as a commercial electrician only ran power to one swimming pool. A freebie for my sister. Had adequate liability insurance but the life time liability kept me from doing them. Did work in churches, schools, machine shops, injection molding shops, factories, slaughter houses etc. Always to!d customers when they asked for a quote to wire in an in ground swimming pool safer to hire an licensed electrical contractor who does several in ground pools a year because they will get it done quicker and safer and get work inspected & passed with no vio!ations.n
