I would think the surge protector would be to protect the electronics inside of the fire pump controller. I would also think that there is surge protection built into the controller itself.

Pardon my ignorance but is a diesel fire pump using the engine to drive the pump or is it driving a gen set to power the pump?? If it is the engine driving the pump, just where the heck would you put the surge protector? And wouldn’t this be a mechanical/ valve device? A mechanical governor? .....

A diesel pump is still going to have an electric starter which is going to use some sort of switch to monitor the fire protection system and start automatically when there is an alarm or other emergency condition. And I would think that they started would be powered by a battery with a trickle charger that keeps in at the set voltage. There may also be other status monitoring on the pump to alert on trouble conditions. I don’t know why you wouldn’t have the starter system and potentially the status monitoring on surge protection.

All of the diesel pump controllers I have had dealings with in the last 30+ years all commercial power is used for is to power the 2 battery chargers. All of the controls, starting and monitoring runs off of the battery power.

Common sense tells that is BS. Yet, it makes it through nonetheless. NEC is not perfect for sure.
