On this channel, I aim to demonstrate my modest pedal steel guitar skills. I've been playing the pedal steel only since 2011 when I finally decided to order a pedal steel from the US. Apart from the pedal steel which I regard as my main instrument, I also play guitar, bass, the banjo and ukulele. The banjo I play to help loosen up the fingers to allow me to play the pedal steel better and because I dig bluegrass banjo.
From time to time, I'll do some videos with the guitar as a break from the pedal steel.
If you find that some of the Liked Videos and Subscriptions appear somewhat out of character with the pedal steel orientation of this channel it's because my kids also use my KZread account when I'm logged in to watch the videos that they like.

Danny let’s hear it now 6 years later.
Nice! I'm obsessed with this solo
I met Don Helms several years ago. After Hank, he played with the Wilburn Brothers, who were my mom's cousins. They came from here in Hardy, Arkansas. A few years back, we held a celebration of the Wilburn's, here in Hardy. Of course, the brothers were all gone, but their sister and remaining family came. Don Helms also came and played with the local band that did the tribute show. He was such a fine gentleman, and I can remember seeing him of a lot of the Wilburn Bros shows in the old days when I was a kid. The Malpas Brothers came and sang a lot of Hank's songs as well as those of the Wilburn's. It was an honor to meet a steel pioneer!
Hi! I thought you did a good job! I'm not a steel player but I AM a big fan of Rusty Young and his time with Buffalo Springfield and Poco. I really like the sound of a Pedal Steel guitar. Another band you might like (if you don't already know about them) is New Riders Of The Purple Sage (especially "The Adventures Of Panama Red") with Buddy Cage on pedal steel (replacing Jerry Garcia, who needed to spend more time with his own band "Grateful Dead"). Great album, some really nice steel playing!
Never seen a right-handed 4001 with an upside-down headstock like that!
I sure could use your pedal steel part to my recording I just made. I did the Banjo part on my keyboard, and it worked great, but I can't figure out how to simulate the nice joib you did here.
Thank you A big help
GREAT JOB 👏 I love Hank Williams songs and you did a great job on the steel guitar
Thanks so much!
Beautiful ! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice job. Can you tab these parts out. Im trying to learn some of this for our band
Ouch.
Thanks for offering this up! I am only 3 yrs into learning to play the 5 string. I have looked at the on line tabs but cant align them with what I am hearing in the song. The six string by Taylor does answer it..Do you have a tab of your version, as I can’t get the fret fingering and picking off the video. thanks for any help, Jeff
Nice but next time, turn on a light.
Hey man, this is pretty cool. Love this song!
What tuning you use? I try to learn play this song with my lap steel.
Thanks for watching, man. The tuning is E9, the usual tuning used for country music. On a lap steel you may struggle a bit I think to achieve some notes without the A and B pedals that are available on a pedal steel.
@@Dannykhc Well, Benders for B,G and D strings. And I personally use Open A tuning.
@@HautaAntero If you're playing benders then I suppose you could do a reasonable emulation. Have fun!
@@Dannykhc Thanks man! 👍
Is that one of those Chipson pedal steels?
Nope, brand name is GFI, student model, made in the USA. Thanks for watching.
Thanks! Since I play piano and not guitar I wrote out the notes, maybe someobdy else will find this helpful: (G Chord) G G D (Am Chord) A A E (C Chord) C C E F (G Chord) G G D Chorus: (G Chord) G G D (Am Chord) A G F# E (C Chord) C E F F# (G Chord)G G D (G Chord Variation) G G D E
What's in the cardboard boxes?
Wtf is going on with that beat😮?? Sounds utterly atrocious
i cannot thank you enough for this
Playing lead guitar is about hitting the right frets. Playing pedal steel is about hitting the right molecule.
Have you tried it in open e? Good work
Thanks for watching, karllieb .If you are referring to one of the acoustics in open tuning, no, I didn't try it with Open E because I did not want to increase tension on the acoustic. So I kept it on Open D. I believe Keith himself does not really remember if he really used Open D or Open E.
Great to see this broken down!
I didn't know Jimmy used this instrument on that song..
For those who want to have a deep dive into the history of this song, there's a great video recently released on it by KZread FlipSideCT here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iZx2pJprld2dnbA.html Enjoy!
Don't worry about it. Your playing was great as was your choice of the song.
Notes in the description
Can I ask what tuning is this? :)
Thanks for watching @Gunbrith, I'm using the most common pedal steel tuning, called E9.
I agree one of the best. Your playing gave me chills down both sides, both legs.
I have the Don helms book and it's played different than that. The intro. Everything
I can only say that I did not know about Don's book, honestly! As I said in the notes to this video, I did my best to reproduce what Don played but on a modern pedal steel tuned to E9 tuning. I liked this song and as a learner of pedal steel, Don's part seemed quite an easy part to play and I decided to have a go at copying Don's part, on the assumption I would learn better by playing actual licks than going through dry exercises in a pedal steel instruction book. Other people are free to post up videos on how to exactly reproduce Don's steel part.
That's not how Jimmy played the steel guitar on the song tangerine
Great job ! Thanks for your work !
That's wrong and sounds wrong. Yes, one of the guitars was nashville tuned but there was no capo on it. Capo was only on the open E guitar. Your rendition sounds nothing like the original.
Help him out then...certainly there's some similarities
You hating bro. He did a good job 😂 chill bro
I'm not hating. It just sucks.
brilliant
Great job. I like the pedal steel a lot. It fits in great. Love Bruce Langhorne's fills. Thanks.
This is great, it'll save me a lot of work when I eventually cover it!
Awesome, I can't remember if I requested this or not. Would you want to a version of this up to speed with the song so I could use it in a collab on my channel?
Thanks for watching. I suppose I could manage that, just give me some time, man!
I love this guitar
Thanks so much for posting this, I was able to transpose this over to 6 string standard tuning which sounds pretty good and it was a great learning experience as well.
Don't hear it?
Thanks for posting. I have been searching for the pedal steel guitar tabs for this song and no luck so far. I'd love to be able to play this.
That sounds really cool ..
Wow you nailed it
THANKS
Your guitar is horribly out of tune.
Thank you
