What if Roger McGuinn played on Satisfaction in 1965?
I was thinking of doing a cover of Satisfaction imagining what it would sound like if Keith Richards had used a mandolin instead of his guitar in 1965
So I recorded a mandolin against a backing track I compiled with Charlie’s drum part, Brian’s acoustic guitar and Bill’s bass part.
Then I thought what would have Roger McGuinn, or Jim as he was then known as in 1965, sounded like playing with the Stones on the track, with all that piercing jingle jangle of the Byrds.
So I came up with something that sounded Roger McGuinn-ish, while keeping Keith’s riff intact. I moved the guitar riff to the 3rd string and adding in some open notes on 1st and 2nd strings.
Of course, playing in the style of Roger, it simply would not do to have fuzztone on the Rickenbacker 12 string.
Incidentally it would appear Keith Richards originally played the riff on the 6th string based on contemporary footage in 1965 of the band playing the song live.
