You might mention that the 2024 NEC requires generators or whole home battery backups to be sized to support the load transferred to them. That means for a 200A service, you would need a battery capable of 48kW, or install sub-panels for critical loads.

Good video but I think that something that got missed in this is (cost per kwh) cost including installation per units kwh capacity. Some AC Battery systems are only around $800 per kwh while some others cost around $1500 or more per kwh .

  • @SolarSurge

Good point. You should definitely consider overall $ per kHh of installed capacity.

Enphase has great products I have no issues with anything that they do. Who's just a little unfortunate that the cost of the in phase solar only battery sized to any substance is so close in cost to a full function battery like a Franklin for example.

Joe, with all the battery folks going to a more module layout where you can add more storage as you need it or can afford it does the size of a signal battery matter? I think it's not about total system capacity and how easy is it to add more storage if and and as you need it. Just a thought.

  • @SolarSurge

I think battery size matters because the more individual batteries that need to be integrated, the more complex and costly the installation.

A video on how to physically plan the space for (additional) battery expansion later (especially important with Enphase due to the smaller capacity per battery) would be great. A poorly planned setup could make wiring/positioning future battery a bigger job than it needs to be.

Great video review! Both Matt Ferrell's channels and yours are a must-watch. It's like a good comic book crossover with you reviewing the video! I personally prefer Solaredge due to the lower price point compared to Enphase, but the NMC battery chemistry is less superior than LFP. I do have a question. Since Solaredge has released their Solaredge Energy Hub inverter, has the reliability improved? Has the installers noticed a lowering of the failure rates with that inverter?

It has always seemed to me that Enphase has gone out of their way to create a route where they force people that buy their solar panel micro inverters and controllers, etc. to force people to be locked into buying all Enphase components including batteries. They also seem to have (doubled down) by creating their batteries with even more micro inverters and so to force people to make you buy as many of their inverters as possible and in the end it is to line their pockets. ( Not a Question Really, but more of what i've seen from their equipment and their pushing people to buy more and more of their micro inverters. )

The counterpoint is vendor finger-pointing if an issue arises leaving homeowner in the lurch when combining best-of-breed. We are VERY early in the tech curve on consumer whole home batteries (if the overall scheme of things). I have SunPower system using EnPhase inverters… I’m annoyed enough with SunPower for their heavily shortcut to-my-detriment install, that I’d love to dump their PVS6… but anyway. As SPAN is complete overkill for me/my use case, what I’ll be looking forward at some point is a Hybrid Inverter and battery system that are guaranteed compatible, if not same vendor or an integrated unit. Matt’s mentions his real reason for enPhase battery is local AHJ sprinkler requirement for over 20kWh system … as I’m looking at >20kWh battery system, so enPhase makes no sense at this time for me.. other professionally installed options will be cheaper

Joe, you should contact Enphase. The CEO wrote a letter to shareholders and stated the company's next generation IQ battery is coming out in early 2025. here is a brief from of the letter: In 2025, we plan to introduce our fourth-generation battery, which is designed to increase energy density by 40%, reduce wall space area by 60%, and reduce cost. This is achieved primarily by optimizing the electronics inside the battery, utilizing our new 1.68 kW AC microinverter variant with integrated battery management and neutral-forming capability. We are also working closely with our battery cell suppliers to advance our battery design life up to 20 years, and to further improve battery safety and reliability. Starting in 2024, our batteries will include microinverters manufactured in our contract manufacturing facilities in the United States, leveraging the IRA

In the end it seems you’d be better of having an energy audit of the house, mitigate things like missing insulation, replace old single pane windows, replace older water heater, replace old furnace with heat pump, etc. in other words, limit your energy usage up front before investing in solar cells and batteries.

True. I have all of 3.9 kW peak of solar. Under NEM 2.0 in California I produce 2,000 kW-hr excess per year. This really surprised me as in renovating my house I added a basement and two more baths to a three bedroom house. The difference was really insulating everything, putting in double pane windows and going all electric with heat pumps for AC and hot water.

@@SolarSurgeEnphase Requires a live internet connection, to control the battery discharge, in the event your connected to a virtual powerplant on the grid, this is because the utility directs them to put your system in discharge in the event they need grid support. They also require a cell modem as a backup, in the event the main ethernet or wifi connection stops working. It’s also a good ides for the data logging of production & discharge, and finally it’s a requirement for their 15 year/6,000 cycle battery warranty. how can they track cycles if it’s not being monitored?

Good video, but I disagree with your video title. When I go camping, the tent I use will never bring in any revenue. However, the tent "pays" for itself the first time it keeps me dry during an overnight rain. Batteries are not necessarily the best financial investment, but they DO have a return on investment and the financial return is faster when the prices of electricity goes up. "Financial sense" of the return on investment depends on future electricity rates, but practicality during grid power outages is priceless.

Great points! Given that battery technology is changing faster than just about anything else, I'd really hesitate on getting a battery that was packaged with a lot of other technologies that are changing more slowly. Having everything in one package may seem nice and convenient, but you may want to upgrade each piece of it at different times depending on the technology improvements, and if you do that, then Powerwall 3 loses much of its appeal.

These are typical interest rates. Solar just isn't cheap enough, and it's been this way since I remember in the 1970s. government involvement is wrong answer. I've said, Ford made the car affordable and attractive to the masses without the government, Solar Ford needs to make it cheap and attractive. In the end, I don't think solar will ever be what I use to hope for, the panacea of cheap power. It will be relegated to niche consumers and ultra rich to service server farms, the fastest and soon to be largest power consumer.
