Got two PW3s installed with solar. Best investment I’ve made since I reside in San Diego where electric rates continue to rise. Smooth process working directly with Tesla and no subcontracting needed.

It only works if you invest all your cash flow savings you would otherwise spend on energy costs over the 25-30yrs in a boring S&P fund at 8% CAGR. Never finance or lease. Make sure you run the numbers on doing nothing and just paying energy prices and investing the system costs at 8% returns and see the difference.

We just had our Solar Install with a single PW3 completed last week here in Texas. We worked directly with a local installer for the entire purchase/install and were very pleased with the process. The sales, quotes they provided with solar made everything pretty smoothe. For a major install like this, I honestly don’t want to source materials from separate sites.

Excellent breakdown. We are actively shopping to retrofit our current solar only NEM 2 system with battery backup/storage. All indicators show we need additional panels. Received a few quotes from local installers for solar panels and batteries (Enphase, Powerwall 2). All were higher than Tesla's install quote (using Powerwall 3) by as much as $40k to $50k.

We already know how it looks when there is no direct option. Car dealerships are an example. If there is not a limit of "ok I buy from Tesla directly" the contractors are going to rise the prices to the stratosphere, Tesla is going to lose sales, the costumers will pay a fortune, and the pace of solar installations will slowdown, all in benefit of the contractors.

  • @WAGISDev

Got 2 PW3s installed w/o solar through a local contractor. What is not in the documentation is that the PW3 without solar has a heartbeat which ends up sucking down ~$30 extra a month in power. Going to install a minimal solar array to cover the heartbeat + my home baseload. One thing not in the documentation...Tesla recommends the battery to be at 90% vs. 100%. They don't have this in any documentation, but if you look at the help me choose site, it says right on the page.... Backup Reserve 90% charge is optimal for backup duration, you can configure this in your app after installation

@WAGISDev All inverters, BMS, etc have idle power usage. Not sure how much kWh/month you’re claiming but assuming 20c/kWh price where you are that’s only about 100W idle power per Powerwall, that’s actually on the better end for solar systems. On the max SOC recommended , are you sure you’re not reading something intended for Powerwall 2? They have NMC chemistry cells, which are far more sensitive to degradation at 10% SOC. Also, “storm mode” tends to help out with making sure you’re full when you need to be full

I went directly with Tesla for my solar and Powerwall + install. I am considering going a different route for my next installation at my new house under construction because I want to do a ground mount this time around. I went with Tesla the first time because it was cheaper, but I regret losing my SREC for that.

Good to see they are integrating everything into the battery. But, if you want additional capacity, do they sell a PW3 without the extra components at a lower cost? We have a solar roof and standalone inverters and 2 Powerwall 2s. The system works well, and we are under NEM2 so get better rates.

The battery-only PW3 add-on module product is slated to come Q4 this year. It’s supposed to mount back to face with the master PW3 module, so adds depth rather than taking up wall

@@aoeuuaoaou I hope stacking like that is an option and you can still wall-mount side-by-side. I have PW2s wall-mounted side-by-side and even then, we have to be careful when opening doors.

When a customer of mine in my industry looks up pricing I tell them that this is the price your paying for me to do the work and if you buy the material I will still make the same money but now not offering a labor warranty. They usually let me do it and the times they don’t they usually come back to me because the guys that work for free don’t stay in business long.

As long as you have enough for full-house backup. It gets more complicated, you need a Gateway, if you’re going to only power partial in back-up mode

You can’t actually buy just the powerwall without also paying them to install it. I was looking into doing a diy install. I went with EG4 18kpv inverter and PowerPro battery instead. Tesla doesn’t want my money apparently.

I really don’t understand what the big deal Is with PW3. The only drastic improvement is the installation process. Other than that, there isn’t much added improvement to customer experience. No change in capacity from PW2 and still not enough continuous power for full home backup. Even though Franklin will now be one generation older than PW3, it’s still a better battery. I work for Sunnova and I absolutely love my Franklin/enphase system

Home 8 also has 50% lower power output, only 7.5kW vs 11.5kW (and PW 3 also has enormous 10 second surge output, so saves you $500+ on soft-start for your HVAC compressor motor, etc)
