Mad City Modern

Mad City Modern

My name is Barry and I live in Madison, Wisconsin. My passion for restoring furniture goes beyond a mere hobby; it's a heartfelt commitment to sustainability and preservation. Each restoration project is a labor of love, a tribute to the craftsmanship of bygone eras, and a personal challenge to restore not just the physical piece but also its history

I lived in Madison, WI and it was nicknamed Mad City. Is that why you named your KZread channel Mad City Modern? Great job on that furniture piece 🙂.

Barry, my only suggestion is to make a dust collection box around your router. If don’t then all you’ll have a huge dust collector unsuitable for storage.

What a lovely tribute to the old owner. The piece turned out wonderful! It reminds me of a dresser I had in my bedroom at my childhood home.

Such beautiful raised garden beds, the community should be pleased with them, also the fact they will be growing their own plants, nice job Barry

@MadCityModern thank you for speaking...you have a soothing voice. Your romantic view of your projects comes through every time. On an alternate note I noticed the flag on top of your fridge...sorry for your loss.

@madcitymodern I'm conflicted on this...normally I'm a "don't paint wood" kinda gal...but I liked the swirls on the top. But I also liked the end results. Either way you always do a good job. Jay over on Flipping Drawers has a really cool sandblasting vacuum...could it have been used on this or would it damage the veneer? (Trying to learn more about veneer). Btw...you clean up nicely! How did you not get your dress clothes messed up?)

I kinda disagree with how you took all the patina off of the metal things but the finished product still looks great!

I prefer natural, but from a gardening point of view the red really sets off the foliage. I would choose a white geranium for the dark one.

And no drainage holes? I have a deck with three ROTTED flowerboxes attached to the rail. I did not build it, I bought it. After the third year I noticed the sag. By the fourth year the bottoms were falling away. I discovered the next spring the flowerboxes laying on the driveway. I examined them then realized they had planted directly into the dirt filled boxes with no holes for drainage. Recipe for disaster. NE Ohio.

I am the proud owner of a Lane hope chest, given to me upon graduation from Eighth Grade. It was given to my mother (now 86 years old) for her same milestone. When I can, I plan to get mine refinished to restore it to better condition. Thanks for sharing this beautiful example of what is possible! You do meticulous, exquisite work!

Why bother refinishing for a profit ( aka KZread views) when by the looks of your workshop ( space and tools) you can make custom made pieces for true profit.

I absolutely love this finish. Remember you won't please everyone as people have different tastes and not all good. You will always have negative comments even after completing a masterpiece. Unfortunately, people just like to moan and be negative as thats social media. I think you are very talented. Keep up the great work ❤
