My only advice If you are going to put casters under your router table, make sure all four of those wheels LOCK in place.

I must disagree with you. Restoring and repairing old furniture IS woodworking - a very difficult and specific branch of the discipline, but woodworking, nonetheless. You do great work. As a professional, I use tools which can stand up to the daily wear and tear of being lugged around job sites and still deliver the results I need. Things like torque wrenches and drivers, PPE (electrician), I buy the best of the best. Things which no longer are built to a quality standard, so it doesn't matter - I buy what works with my shop's batteries. It's one of my largest tool overheads, those dratted batteries.

I love to watch people work with their hands, fixing, creating, rejigging! Everything you said sounds totally honest to someone who just watches. But I do use furniture, that was designed, crafted and made for purpose. I suppose I’m “the end user”! Keep sharing your knowledge to those who can benefit from it. I’m not fond of people who don’t share their helpful hints with others. It’s downright selfish! 🛠❤ saw

Get it! having the versatility to do more on projects is a must, not only for the furniture but for content that you need to produce. if someone wants to sponsor you with tools to do that, so be it. I personally use alot of older craftsman woodorking tools. bandsaw, belt sander, tablesaw. alot of the older things work the exact same as the newer ones, just a little heavier and less safety features, but not everyone can afford to go get the newest of every tool.

Hey Barry, just a comment on using the router, you would have been better off doing multiple shallow passes when cutting out the router lift hole rather than doing a full depth cut. Same thing when cutting out the t-track slots. Otherwise good work, it will a handy tool to have.

Barry, my only suggestion is to make a dust collection box around your router. If don’t then all you’ll have a huge dust collector unsuitable for storage.

When you're learning a new skill, it's probably a good idea to start with tools/equipment that don't break the bank. You might decide to continue, in which case you can upgrade. You might also decide that you don't have the requisite talent/patience or whatever to continue trying to learn the new skill. In that case, you didn't blow a small fortune in the beginning on tools/equipment that you won't be using. It's all about baby steps. 😊

What about a rack on the inside of the doors for your router bits? Something similar to the racks a mechanic would use for the sockets for a socket wrench set could work, and the bits would have easier and faster access when needed. You really lucked out on that cabinet. Yes, they used very utilitarian wood and hardware, but it looks well made and sturdy. I can’t wait to see the modifications you will make to customize this to your needs. I have to agree with the suggestion that you install locking wheels. You’re very conscientious about safety, and I would think that the locks to keep the table steady would make it easier to use.

None! I have no setup and it's frustrating. I feel like wood working is my "last frontier" and I can imagine doing it well into my dotage. I have a few very basic pieces of equipment, but I have a 4 year old who keeps getting more expensive every year. (Grateful!) so it's good to know there are quality, low cost tools out there. Maybe a fleshed out workshop isn't out of reach. Thank you Barry, very informative and helpful information.

One item you need to get is a more powerful router. I feel you need minimum 2-1/4hp for a stationary router in a table. Yes your current lift won’t fit unless there is an adapter. But you will soon realize a palm router is not powerful enough for standard router work, as I am sure you found out when making this video. I personally use a 3-1/4hp router in my table and have 2-1/4hp for everyday use. I use trim router for very small and simple tasks like 1/8” round over or small chamfer.

I think this will be awesome! This will last for many, many years for you. I bought a cast iron tavble from China, but i now hawe the problem that this type of adjustable holdingplates does not fit and i can't cut in it... Not a big deal, but something to concider if one want to upgrade to a steeltable and want to use this type of routers (as my plan was...), it is hard to find affordable fixtureplates that fit cheap cast iron tables...
