    Turning an old desk into a new one. Environmentally friendly and practical. The legs of the E7 table are installed with the modified tabletop, perfectly matching the ergonomic C7 chair.

    It's awesome your company is a sponsor of this channel. A desk like that,,,, wow, what a game changer. My craft room is basically going unused, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, and on entering the hospital that day for a bilateral mastectomy on April 9th, 2021, I was told it was stage 1. Well, during surgery, the Dr found that 19 of my lymph nodes were cancerous, so the classification got bumped to stage 3. The following few days were a blur & then I was taken back to the hospital for a CAT scan & Full body Bone scan. These are to see where else it's spread to. Wouldn't ya know it? My cancer went to the bones, I already have hardware in my lower spine, and in my C-spine, & that's exactly where Cancer went all around my lower spine. My ribs etc... Sighs,,, I can't get my wheelchair behind my desk & I'm just screwed because I don't have anyone to help me. Oh well hopes you enjoy the desk it's beautiful

    I wasn’t sure that table could be much of anything, but really like how it turned out. Seeing how hard you worked to get that finish off….it reminds us that even “simple” things take time. Great piece!

    I’m not a big fan of pine furniture, but that’s one of the prettiest pine table tops I’ve ever seen. And I love that you left the little paint flecks in.

    You remind me of my father (a farmer and WWII vet who had a scrap iron pile and who kept a supply of scrap lumber in one of the sheds… he repurposed a lot of things others considered garbage!

    I'm thinking the green tint was to counteract the natural red of the pine wood. This was a great fix to repurpose the coffee table top for the new desk. I always enjoy every episode Barry.

    I was thinking the same, but that was a LOT of green, and it didn't work. I tint my topcoat to adjust the color and it works like that spray toner. That is easier for me to control. Could have been painted green then a bad strip job? Second look, maybe a light green stain that didn't take on the hard wood. It looked like pressure treated lumber. He did a good job with just the wax.

    Nice, most folks would dismiss this piece as junk since it was obviously made with construction grade lumber. My work bench was made with 2x4’s and after planing it and applying an oil finish it looks great. Hope you had a joyful Christmas and looking forward to a wonder filled 2024.

    That really turned out great, Barry...and I was surprised 😂 I'm usually not a fan of the modern look, but that top, after you refinished it, looks really fantastic on that base. It actually gave the posts of the base, that expand up and down, an Art Deco/skyscraper look. The remnants of the old finish added to its character, too. It turned out really good! Great job!

    I like how the wax finished up on the top, a nice clean look making a great looking desk. It reminded me of a piece I did 40 years ago, and still have, my coffee table. It is an oval cherry table, I got it in a scratch and dent sale at a department store in Indianapolis, where i lived at the time. There was a healthy dent in the top of the table, and the finish on the top was badly scratched. I used a stripper to remove the finish, (the legs and base were in good shape). On a suggestion, I used linseed oil to finish the top. I was told linseed oil had been used as a finish by some since colonial times on nice woods, and specifically on wooden gun stocks, so I decided to try it as an experiment. I applied 4 coats over a number of weeks, letting it sit overnight and then buffing it out. It did darken the cherry a bit, but gave a warm, mellow glow to the wood without the sheen of a varnish or poly. Since then, a little beeswax polish a few times a year and it still looks great. Enough of my story, wonderful repurpose of that table top, and it looks beautiful. Great work as always. You have a Happy New Year and wishing you continued success with your chancel in 2024!

    What a nice finish the wax gave to this pine. I'm really impressed by the color. I like it much better than the way the wax came out for the dresser. Is that just a matter of different pines? This is just lovely. The Flexispot aspect of the desk is a great addition, too 😉

    Barry, so that wax won't even yellow/orange with time? Of course it will some, but that is a big wow. I need some of that. The vestige of the old finish only added personality to that top, you must have heard me say, "don't worry about THAT!" Actually I have never seen pine that was stained look good. This is perfect for pine. It probably FEELS good as well. (if that makes sense.)

    Barry that wax is not expensive at all. Not compared to the old popular paste wax. Can I asked if maybe you could apply with a scrubby? Oh, and how many coats?

  • @MadCityModern

    @MadCityModern

    There are probably several ways to apply it. Easiest might just be with a shop towel. I put 3 coats on this one. Will prob still require annual maintenance

    @@MadCityModern Well, that should take less that 15 minutes for another coat or two, very slightly harder than just dusting it. Perfect top for the fancy base because it looks like a workbench and it IS a workbench, yet not junky. I am thinking of half a scotchbrite and just leave that in the can. I just ordered it, we'll see. I just had a situation that I had to paint, then used a graining tool and that "glaze" over latex. You have all the time in the world to play with it, it is foolproof and easy. Two tricks: run grain it how the grain would logically go. Meaning you have to tape off the miters, let it dry, then go the opposite direction. 2: the graining tool is too stark of a contrast to look real, so just lightly drybrush for a nice natural blend. There are no tutorials. Lemon Lady wants to see it, so I will ask her to forward. You two can demonstrate.
