Ep. 77 This Paint Job was HORRIBLE…but then Restored
This Restoration of a Mid-Century Buffet certainly came with many frustrating challenges. The previous owner painted this furniture blue, making the removal of all the finishes very difficult; but, with every challenge, I learn new things. Follow along as I share some of the mistakes I made along the way. Thanks for all the support. Barry

Well said! @Betharoot! I totally agree!! That was quite the ugly duck and it no longer is. I don’t think you ever stop learning lessons and skills unless you decide to. It’s in all things raising children, crops, farm animals, flowers....fixing cars, tractors, roads, houses, furniture......always more lessons! Barry is really a wonderful, creative soul who has an enviable ability to learn. I am always impressed by that!

He is super talented. I quit refinishing painted furniture decades ago, just couldn't deal with cleaning all the paint out of the wood. He did an absolutely fabulous job on this furniture. Seeing some of the projects he has done, and his skills, made me subscribe.
Just freaking gorgeous! Who would have believed that such beautiful wood was hidden under all that hideous finish. Great work, Barry 😁

I love that you don't judge the original refinisher for painting it, when half way through the project you're considering throwing it out yourself. It definitely helps you understand why they decided it wasn't worth more than a coat of spray paint. 😀 But I'm glad we got to see you do a restoration. The end result is beautiful. (Personal preference - I'd swap out those handles.)

Absolutely beautiful Barry. I am convinced this peice was an early 50s blonde Asian influence buffet. From about 1950-54 blonde Asian style was popular along side of Tikki furniture. The handles are heavy and chunky and matched original base that seemed to anchor the peice firmly to the floor. You did an excellent job on it and what a difference the Howard's wax made in the overall beauty of the walnut.Thank you for posting love, love your work and honesty.

I am a coppersmith (self taught and KZread videos). Several weeks a go a friend wanted something unique made. I normally etch but this had to be different. So, again KZread helped. I learned how to nickel plate. Plating is very simple and the plating solution can be made with normal household items.

Barry , you should be very proud of that piece! It is absolutely beautiful! What a transformation!
The walnut veneer is amazing! The legs you added instead of that awful base upgrade the piece! You had an accident with the handles but they turned out beautiful! I am so happy you can afford to edit and restore such pieces and share the process! Thanks so much for sharing

It looks great! Glad you discovered walnut under the blue paint and black enamel.
Greatly improved. Thank you for sharing your process with us. As a neophyte refinisher, all information is good information.
That is a surprisingly beautiful result! Maybe it wasn’t what you hoped for, but that finish and grain is gorgeous, and you kept it from the landfill! Someone will be very happy to have that in their home, thanks to you!

The final (as it is in this video, at least) looks wonderful and is a huge improvement over its original state. Your decision to make it taller was spot-on and really celebrates that walnut grain..
This has nothing to do with your work on the piece but your voice is the only noise I can stand to hear today. I'm on day two of one of the worst migraines I've had since I was hit by a semi 4 years ago and hearing you talk is actually soothing for me today.
Oh my gosh, this is absolutely gorgeous! I think it looks so much better with the old bottom taken off, and the new likes added. I know you see things that still need to be done to it, but it is just beautiful!❤😊

“..At least know with confidence that’s something you’ll never try again”. I can apply this lesson to many experiences in my life. Please ask more than $400. It’s absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful! So glad you didn’t throw this piece to the woodpile!!
Barry, I love your channel, your work, and your soothing tone while educating us along the way! I've ben doing this for decades, but I arn learning from you regularly...ihave never boiled my hardware, just soaked it cold overnight
Amazing, far better than I expected. The walnut veneer is beautiful 😍
I think you did a fantastic job. You transferred an ugly duckling into a swan. Thank you.
It’s beautiful! The legs look original. I’m looking forward to your next projects. Sometimes work can seem like you don’t make much headway, but there are small things that after time build up to make a big transformation! My previous work was in property management, lots of homeless cleanup. No matter the work I did, the next day there was a 97.35% 🙃 chance the mess would be back. After some frustration, I began to improve on my efficiency and worked on approaching each day as calmly as possible. It didn’t happen overnight, haha! I hope these tedious projects can provide you with positive avenues- even the ability to refrain from being overwhelmed and taking the journey bit by bit is big! Have a great week!
The revealed wood grain is absolutely gorgeous. Yes, you’ve put a lot of work into this project, but it definitely shows.

What an absolute stunner!! It's amazing, Barry. You are so humble and perpetually positive. It's understandable to get frustrated with pieces that require a lot of detail work. You might want to keep in mind that your viewers really enjoy watching you work through difficulties like that. Many of us learn through you. Your work is incredible and you might not give yourself enough credit. I'm blown away by what you turned this piece into. It was a brilliant decision to remove the base and add the legs. It's gorgeous!!!

My favorite part of your videos is the paint stripping. I just love it for some weird reason. I'd love a paint stripping compilation video 😊
Wowowowow…the end result is a testament to perseverance! Your decision to remove the base was excellent.
It may have taken lots longer than practical, but refinishing is not always about practical. This looks incredible and I love the new legs. The bees wax enriched the color so much. Its a very beautiful piece!
Just lovely.
Beautiful work!! I have never understood the person who would cover beautiful wood with tacky paint jobs.
After so many painted, cut up and otherwise molested pieces your project is a welcome breath of fresh air. Well done, and Thank You.
Beautiful result!
From where it started to where you finished it turned out beautiful. Like it just the way it looks now. ❤
Whatever its origins and history, you gave the piece new life and purpose. The walnut glows and the new legs give it better proportions. I know you are always learning the crafts but you have a positive and calming attitude to the journey. Well done, Barry.
