Ep. 76 Amazing RESTORATION of a MASSIVE Antique Desk

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I found this old roll top desk on Facebook Marketplace several months ago, along with the matching file cabinet. These pieces were built in the early 1900s and used in the Wisconsin State Capitol Building for many years. The pieces were built using mostly white oak. I will attempt a simple restoration by polishing the brass drawer pulls, and applying oak restore-a-finish to the rest of the piece. This is one of my favorite furniture pieces, and I look forward to using it in my shop for many years. Thank you for your support. Barry

The tour of the capitol building, the scenery on the ride there, the details/ thoughts in your narration, the history of the area, and the restoration of that amazing desk - I'm here for it all! I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I always enjoy hearing you speak about the pieces you're working on. That's part of the beauty of your channel.

My late father purchased one of these, a massive construction with many drawers and cubby holes I have no idea why he got it other than an appreciation in its construction. It sits in my mum's house to this day but, as you note Barry, this size of furniture is far too large to comfortably sit in many rooms, especially our smaller UK homes. I guess when I inherit it I'll try a sale. Thanks for showing us the historical context. Hope all is well. David. .

I have fantasized about having that type of desk since childhood. I'm now middle aged and live in a houst of its era, but I have no idea where such a desk would fit since mine is not a wealthy person's house. Thank you for giving this desk care and a new home!

Barry... This is your ABSOLUTE BEST video yet!!! Your steadfast research of that desk's history, and previous users, aside from being manufactured here in Milwaukee is outstanding. I'm so glad to see that you didn't do a complete restoration and cleaned up the existing finish. I thoroughly enjoyed your narrative as you walked through Wisconsin's beautiful capitol building. You taught me a few facts about that building that I didn't know. Again, best ever KZread video yet Barry! 🥇

Barry, your posts are always so interesting. Thoroughly enjoy them. I too am a lover of roll-top desks. As a child, we had a solid oak rool-top desk my Dad found at an auction in the mid-1950s. Unfortunately when we moved from this particular town we could not move it with us. Even at a young age, 8, I was heartbroken. It took me well into my 60s to find a roll-top desk I wanted. Fortunately, it came to me through a dear friend. It is not solid oak, but it very much resembles the one of my childhood. It makes me happy and that it what matters. Thank you for your most interesting post about your roll-top desk and the awesome chair you found for it. Even though I live in Oregon, I truly enjoyed your home state history lesson. Thank you!

What a honey of a desk, and chair too! I'd have given my right arm for that desk while I was still practicing law. The oak is luscious. Hooray on the trike! I can see why it's so much better on snow and ice with 3 legs instead of 2 on a bike. It looks like fun for grown-ups. The Wisconsin capitol is a work of art; I had no idea it has that level of detail and workmanship. You hit paydirt on the desk and chair! Cheers from Oklahoma!!!

Thank you, Barry for the field trip to the Wisconsin Capitol. My mother's family is from Wisconsin originally and I have become a memeber of the historical society to get infor about my family. You do such a great job of educating us as well as entertaining us. The clean up of the desk shows us we don't need to do a full restoration and the tour of the capitol taught us about the artists who built the building and the history of it. Thank you.

Great job, Barry. I have always wanted a roll top desk, even though they are impractical for use with a desktop computer. I did see a modern custom roll top years ago at the Art Fair on the Square that would accommodate a monitor and computer, but as a poor graduate student I couldn't afford the over $5000 price tag. Later I did get my Dad's old flat top 'aircraft carrier' of a desk, and it is the centerpiece of my home office. And I loved the capitol tour! I haven't gone down and wandered through in years, and I really should do so.

This video felt like a TV episode of a historical show. It was extremely relaxing and interesting at the same time, with the story of the restoration weaved with the story of the furniture itself. It wasn't just a video, it was an artfully put together mini-documentary. I loved it. =) And the finished piece looks AMAZING!

I agree with you on this!!! Sometimes a piece doesn't need to be stripped down, just cleaned up and given a boost. Thank you for showing where the desk came from... It's beautiful! 😍 and I love love how many different countries had an element of design in it! Kind of like how we are are as a people. Y'alls badger is a great animal with good skills and it's awesome to see it respected and represented!!! Our capital is lovely, but we don't see our Longhorns or armadillos (we have both as official animals) prominently represented. 😮

I absolutely love to hear about the history of anything really. But your tour through your Capital was beautiful. You have a beautiful, calm, lovely voice, and it’s very soothing to listen to you. Oh, and the desk turned out beautifully. Thank you.

Beautiful desk, and I particularly enjoyed the story. I listened to the premier while at work, and am watching it now at home in the evening. The desk's story is fascinating, as well as a look at its original home, giving an idea of how it was used, and perhaps what decisions may have been made there. Additionally, in the craftsmanship in the piece and care and pride taken when building it. I agree, it doesn't warrant a full restoration, plus some of the age marks are part of its history and beauty. Great Job, great story, great video. I really enjoyed this one. Thank you.

Magnificent piece. We bought one that had been painted an ugly green and needed new backing on the roller top. It was big and heavy, but you could hide a lot of stuff under the roll top :) I wish I had looked for manufacturer now.

Stunning desk and a magnificent building. I am in Scotland and love touring old buildings and we have quite a few and wherever I go in the U.K. I usually manage to find one to walk around so I enjoyed the building tour immensely.
