Ep. 76 Amazing RESTORATION of a MASSIVE Antique Desk
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I found this old roll top desk on Facebook Marketplace several months ago, along with the matching file cabinet. These pieces were built in the early 1900s and used in the Wisconsin State Capitol Building for many years. The pieces were built using mostly white oak. I will attempt a simple restoration by polishing the brass drawer pulls, and applying oak restore-a-finish to the rest of the piece. This is one of my favorite furniture pieces, and I look forward to using it in my shop for many years. Thank you for your support. Barry

The tour of the capitol building, the scenery on the ride there, the details/ thoughts in your narration, the history of the area, and the restoration of that amazing desk - I'm here for it all! I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I always enjoy hearing you speak about the pieces you're working on. That's part of the beauty of your channel.

The desk turned out absolutely gorgeous. What a beautiful piece of art. And maybe some people won't be interested in a tour of the state capitol, but I thought it was really interesting. It is full of beautiful craftsmanship. Thanks for a lovely video.
I would legitimately watch you go to museums all throughout the US and tell me about history lol it's fascinating and your voice is soothing
My late father purchased one of these, a massive construction with many drawers and cubby holes I have no idea why he got it other than an appreciation in its construction. It sits in my mum's house to this day but, as you note Barry, this size of furniture is far too large to comfortably sit in many rooms, especially our smaller UK homes. I guess when I inherit it I'll try a sale. Thanks for showing us the historical context. Hope all is well. David. .
Barry, beautiful restoration! I'm so happy that there are still people around who cherish history!
I have fantasized about having that type of desk since childhood. I'm now middle aged and live in a houst of its era, but I have no idea where such a desk would fit since mine is not a wealthy person's house. Thank you for giving this desk care and a new home!
You’re such a cool guy, Barry. I love this desk and I was sad at the thought you would strip it. I’m so glad you didn’t, it looks rich and old. And the chair is a beautiful complement to it. Thanks for the Wisconsin history lesson, I love history. You tell the stories so masterfully, I enjoy every minute.

What a fine old desk. I loved the tour of the Wisconsin Capital building. We have a great state capital building in my native Louisiana, and now Wisconsin's is a new favorite. BTW: I want an E-trike like yours too. JohnDavid

Barry, I have received a reply from you asking me to text a particular account. Thinking something is amiss and this is not you. Beware
Barry... This is your ABSOLUTE BEST video yet!!! Your steadfast research of that desk's history, and previous users, aside from being manufactured here in Milwaukee is outstanding. I'm so glad to see that you didn't do a complete restoration and cleaned up the existing finish. I thoroughly enjoyed your narrative as you walked through Wisconsin's beautiful capitol building. You taught me a few facts about that building that I didn't know. Again, best ever KZread video yet Barry! 🥇
That building was absolutely stunning!!!! The desk came out so beautifully!! I live the chair you found to use with it as well. Thanks for a great video, as always. I thoroughly loved the tour as well as learning the history of that desk!
I tend to get worried when I don't see something from you on KZread. You know, it's like not hearing from someone in your family for awhile: you get concerned. I appreciate you taking the time to include this group in the lessons we would never otherwise hear. Like family, I'm glad you are there. The desk is awesome and it came to you for a reason. Enjoy as I enjoy your channel.
Barry, your posts are always so interesting. Thoroughly enjoy them. I too am a lover of roll-top desks. As a child, we had a solid oak rool-top desk my Dad found at an auction in the mid-1950s. Unfortunately when we moved from this particular town we could not move it with us. Even at a young age, 8, I was heartbroken. It took me well into my 60s to find a roll-top desk I wanted. Fortunately, it came to me through a dear friend. It is not solid oak, but it very much resembles the one of my childhood. It makes me happy and that it what matters. Thank you for your most interesting post about your roll-top desk and the awesome chair you found for it. Even though I live in Oregon, I truly enjoyed your home state history lesson. Thank you!
Barry just the best episode so far. In the love of woodworking and furniture , the provenance proves worthy. Some pieces remain elusive, some reveal much. I appreciate what you accomplish.
What a honey of a desk, and chair too! I'd have given my right arm for that desk while I was still practicing law. The oak is luscious. Hooray on the trike! I can see why it's so much better on snow and ice with 3 legs instead of 2 on a bike. It looks like fun for grown-ups. The Wisconsin capitol is a work of art; I had no idea it has that level of detail and workmanship. You hit paydirt on the desk and chair! Cheers from Oklahoma!!!
It's wonderful to see such an old piece of furniture that's been looked after so well. I really enjoy your occasional side stories. They're always interesting.
Absolutely beautiful restoration! Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Barry!
I truly hope you keep the desk and the chair. They are VERY BEAUTIFUL !
Thank you, Barry for the field trip to the Wisconsin Capitol. My mother's family is from Wisconsin originally and I have become a memeber of the historical society to get infor about my family. You do such a great job of educating us as well as entertaining us. The clean up of the desk shows us we don't need to do a full restoration and the tour of the capitol taught us about the artists who built the building and the history of it. Thank you.
I love how you're more interested in regular people stories.... Can you imagine the stories of the folks who help build the capital buildings and any other special building in America? Or even the folks who help keep these buildings clean and up to par? I love your heart and where its at. You're a wonderful and talented man. ❤

The desk and the story are beautiful! Thank you for being you.
I think it's awesome when you share the history of an item
This desk would make a wonderful craft station because of all the cubbies
Stories just add to the beauty of the restoration. Thank you
Yep… Restore a Finish was all it needed. I appreciated seeing the inside of your capital too. It is a beautiful building. Great video! I hope you are keeping the desk. It is lovely.
Gorgeous desk, you did it justice.
Cool desk, beautiful building, soothing voice of Gary ❤
Although I can't say that I like the desk, the tour was very enjoyable, and I'd love a bike like that. How great that you can just walk into the state capitol and wander around.
Thank You for preserving the past that would otherwise be lost. BRAVO,
The desk is magnificent, and Im glad it now belongs to you ,who appreciates the history and the beautiful wood its made from
Great desk, great story, great telling. Thank you.
Great job, Barry. I have always wanted a roll top desk, even though they are impractical for use with a desktop computer. I did see a modern custom roll top years ago at the Art Fair on the Square that would accommodate a monitor and computer, but as a poor graduate student I couldn't afford the over $5000 price tag. Later I did get my Dad's old flat top 'aircraft carrier' of a desk, and it is the centerpiece of my home office. And I loved the capitol tour! I haven't gone down and wandered through in years, and I really should do so.
You could honestly talk about anything and most of us would listen. You're so calming

Whaaaat!!!! I was waiting for you to transport the desk home on that bike!!! What a jyp!! I'm overjoyed for you Barry that you're able to integrate your love of traveling into your YT Channel!! Your stories are FANTASTIC Bud!!!! And.... back to the EBike. I fell in LOVE with mine!!! At 46 years old I ride a few nights a week with the kids from our cul-de-sac. And I do mean kids, 12-14 years old. Their parent's trust them with me. And... we ride around town & I point out different landscapes & plants used within the landscapes. We call ourselves the Majestic Maniacs!!! Thanks for sharing, hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!
This video felt like a TV episode of a historical show. It was extremely relaxing and interesting at the same time, with the story of the restoration weaved with the story of the furniture itself. It wasn't just a video, it was an artfully put together mini-documentary. I loved it. =) And the finished piece looks AMAZING!
As a European who’s very unlikely to be able to visit Wisconsin I very much appreciated the tour and the narration combined with a “rebuild” of an historical piece. I applaud 👏🏻 Thank you

I’m always looking forward to your KZread presentation. My husband has a room-top and we love it. The Capital is breath taking, especially the domus and the marble everywhere!
I agree with you on this!!! Sometimes a piece doesn't need to be stripped down, just cleaned up and given a boost. Thank you for showing where the desk came from... It's beautiful! 😍 and I love love how many different countries had an element of design in it! Kind of like how we are are as a people. Y'alls badger is a great animal with good skills and it's awesome to see it respected and represented!!! Our capital is lovely, but we don't see our Longhorns or armadillos (we have both as official animals) prominently represented. 😮
This was made in a time when things were meant to last a lifetime. Love the channel and thank you for giving that desk a future. If only that desk could talk.

Your soothing voice and calm demeanor made this video very pleasant to view. Absolutely loved the stunning footage of your amazing state capitol building and enjoyed the commentary on the history and style of architecture. Quite stunning. The desk is just beautiful and I hope you can find a buyer that will use and respect this unique piece.
I love roll top desks....almost as much as the architecture of a home or business where it is used.
Wow…you brought that back to life…and ready for another 120 years of service. Great job!
I am so glad you did this video. Being a Wisconsinite, I have been to the capital a few times. The last was during my time as a navigator helping people enroll in affordable health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. It is a beautiful building you don’t appreciate as a kid touring it during a boring field trip. Personally I feel the stories are just as interesting as the pieces you are working on. DDecker

I appreciate the probable history behind the desk. We in Texas are inordinately proud of our state captiol building, now I need to tour the Wisconsin building to hear the echo in that dome.
What a beautiful and well preserved piece of history. I just love old furniture... mostly because it was built sturdy, and to last while also being so beautiful
Your State has a gorgeous Capitol Building. Simply gorgeous. Restore-a-Finish is a winner product. The desk is a keeper.

Hi Barry, this is very good work. Lots of love is put into this and it shows!. Cheers from Italy
That desk is amazing. With the chair that fits like a glove. I like the story that you created also.
Gorgeous desk! But you’re right - it’s way too big for most people’s homes. Thanks for the capital tour - there is some stunning architecture in there. I always loved going to our capital (Lincoln, NE). They put so much artistry into buildings back then. Every time I go there, I learn details I missed previously.
What a beautiful piece of history. The State Capital building is absolutely breathtaking and I thoroughly enjoyed your tour of it.

Love the walk through Capitol building. Love the history. Fantastic old desk and chair!
The building was a stunning piece of architecture, very intricate and opulent BUT the desk outshone it in my eyes. The design and beauty was gorgeous and my dream piece of furniture if I ever had room for it 😍
Barry, I hope you keep the desk, you'll never regret it, and if you sell it, you'll always regret it. Nice video. The history lesson was entertaining.

Beautiful desk, and a beautiful state capitol! I really enjoy what you do with furniture, but the stories around the furniture are what sets you apart!
Loved to tour! Love the desk. So many drawers to store all your stuff.
That is an amazing desk! It turned out really well too. So much storage, and those pull-out tables are brilliant.
Thank you for the tour of the Capitol. It’s incredible! I appreciate you taking the time to do that.
What a beautiful building. I really enjoyed this video as I probably wouldn’t get to see this building otherwise. I loved the story of the desk and am glad to see it restored. ❤
Wow! What a stunning building! I love all of the stone used. True Craftsmanship you don't see anymore.
I love that old Electrolux! I’ve used two of them in my lifetime. I’m enjoying your videos.
I am glad that you are keeping this desk, it is beautiful and still has so much to offer yet. It is nice to see such old beautiful workmanship. I have a secretary/hutch that will need a lot of work including glass to repair it to the beauty it once was. The original castors are still on it. Actually love the history lesson too. Have a great day
Such a beautiful piece. Thanks for not painting it. I always think about not only the history of the piece, but the trees that were used, the people all along the way, who played a part in making it - and you mentioned that! Thanks for the tour of your capital building. Its beautiful.
Hi, you did the right thing by not completely restoring the desk. I love your channel as you have the same mindset as me. Keep up the great work you do. Kind regards Del. From the UK.
I love the roll top desk. And the capitol tour❤
What a gorgeous desk, Barry, and as always a beautiful job restoring it. I LOVED the tour of the Capitol Building! Your loving attention to the history and to details like the grain of the marble elevate your videos far beyond the average restoration video. And of course, your incredibly soothing voice. Ignore anyone who complains about them. Those people just aren’t your audience! Those who resonate with you will find you, never fear. Thanks again for the wonderful video.

Great video. The capital building is truely beautiful, such an example of craftsmanship. This is also a quality I think you demonstrate in your love for the furniture you restore. Keep sharing!
Beautiful desk! Love the capital too! Having grown up in Madison, my friends and I would go up and wander the capital. We'd sneak in rooms probably not meant far the public. We would end up walking down State St shopping and eating lunch at Rocky Rococs pizza before walking down to the Memorial Union at the UW. Miss those days as I live in AZ now for 38 years. Thanks for trip down memory lane!

Barry...KEEP THE DESK! 🥰🥰
Beautiful desk, and I particularly enjoyed the story. I listened to the premier while at work, and am watching it now at home in the evening. The desk's story is fascinating, as well as a look at its original home, giving an idea of how it was used, and perhaps what decisions may have been made there. Additionally, in the craftsmanship in the piece and care and pride taken when building it. I agree, it doesn't warrant a full restoration, plus some of the age marks are part of its history and beauty. Great Job, great story, great video. I really enjoyed this one. Thank you.

❤ I wish I’d seen this earlier! I’ve wanted a desk like this for 20 years or more. I love it! I want it!
Magnificent piece. We bought one that had been painted an ugly green and needed new backing on the roller top. It was big and heavy, but you could hide a lot of stuff under the roll top :) I wish I had looked for manufacturer now.
The desk is beautiful as it is! A piece of history! Thank you for the tour of the beautiful building!
So beautiful. Such talent.
What a beautiful desk! I would keep it without a doubt. And loved a tour of the capitol. Such history and so grand. Nothing built like that today. Great video, Barry.
