I am Geoff Steiner and I love off-roading, rock crawling, overlanding & working on my Jeep. This channel features off-roading videos with various vehicles in both stock and modified form such as Jeep Wrangler JKs, a Toyota FJ Cruiser, Jeep JLs, Lexus GXs, a Ford F-150 truck and a Jeep LJ. We hit trails from mild to semi-wild across Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. If you want to go wheel or collaborate on a video then send me an e-mail at [email protected]

I drove this trail around 2009 in a 2003 4Runner starting from the top. Below there were about 15 cars gathering with the occupants watching me. When I came to the bottom, they told me there was a betting pool if I would fail or make it. Only one guy in that group of 15 betted I would make it. I’ll never run that trail again. The tippy sections are too much for my fear of heights.
Best one yet. I’m doing something very similar. You addressed most of my concerns. I need to use a single lifting point so I can “spin” my tent to get it up inside the roof trusses. Once up I’ll lay 2 bars across the rafters and lower it onto them. I want to leave my crossbars attached like you did. Excellent video, thanks so much 👍😉
This guy in the shirt wheel based wrangler was having some serious trouble staying on the lines. But I will say the shirt wheel base was hurting him a lot compared to talks long wheel base jeeps
Nice video/narrative. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks
Okay to do this trail solo, 1 vehicle?
Yes. Just be prepared with spare tires and air compressor or something to inflate tires with. It’s always after traveling with a group but this trail has a lot of traffic so if you get into a bind you should see someone else. - Geoff
A lot of you wouldn't believe it if I told you my buddy and I drove this pass in a 1980 Volkswagon Scirocco, but we did. Those cars are pretty exceptional.
think a 2wd stock xj jeep with offroad tires would make it?
Man I don’t know. 2WD makes it to where you might not make it. But, if you travel with someone else they might be able to give you a tug when you get stuck
I do agree with the rule that those going uphill have the right of way; however some discretion should be applied. If the one going downhill needs to reverse then who is going uphill? It's much easier to go uphill while driving forward. IMHO some give and take should always rule.
It is always give and take, and I haven't had many problems with experienced off-roaders. Before I travel downhill, I always look for pull-outs and plan ahead in case if I run into oncoming traffic. Many times, I have been traveling uphill and see downhill traffic and I find a good pullout and wait for them to come down because I can see that they don't have a place to pull out, and they are always gracious and thank me for pulling out. There is no reason to create a train wreck if it can be avoided by anyone. When I am traveling uphill and downhill, I always take note of pull outs that I pass, so I have an idea of where I need to back up to in order to let traffic pass. Often times it is easier for a rig traveling uphill to find a pull-out and just wait for downhill traffic, but the general wheeling public understands that uphill traffic has the right of way and that is Colorado state law.
@@Colorado4x4 I totally agree, however the key word here is "experienced." I've found in my years the trails more enjoyable after the first wk in September after schools start. I like your attitude. I wish the trails were all marked by waypoints marking suitable pull overs so one might know which way to jump next. 🤔
I hear you. I plan to do more weekday wheeling this summer anyways. It is always better with less people! That is a great idea about marking pull-out waypoints! I never thought about that, but it would help people prepare more. That is fabulous. - Geoff
@@Colorado4x4 do you use Gaia or perhaps OnX? Be great to coordinate somehow with them to mark pullouts on trails.
I love the idea and it is not as complex as the other projects that I saw. Thank you!1
👍👍👍
This is probably the best HR trail guide on KZread. Not sure where part 4 went but really enjoyed 1 to 3!
Thanks! I haven’t started editing the last two episodes. I got burnt out making these and I’ve been taking a break. The videos didn’t perform as well as I expected they would on KZread. - Geoff
@@Colorado4x4 I can imagine. Clearly a lot of different video cuts went into the first three and I can imagine how long it takes just to get them organized let alone cut them together. Thx again.
@pchris6662 yes sir. Took quite a while and I didn’t like making them 😂 It’s not my cup of tea. But with that said, I will finish up the series at some point!
This is one of the most iconic trails there is for off-roading. One thing I wish you would include is clear mentions on where the bypasses are, and what level of difficulty they are for those people that want to see this trail but aren’t necessarily looking to risk damage/breakage. Absolutely everyone highlights the hard sections and shows the tough stuff, but everyone seems to ignore the bypasses and mention when there’s a hard section that can’t be bypassed.
Good point! I will do that in the future, for sure. Thanks for the comment. - Geoff
Awesome video! 1976 my dad took us over that pass in a 2 wheel drive ford pickup loaded with mobile home skirting to do a job in Leadville. I had heard it was paved today. Obviously Not.😅
That’s awesome! What a great story! Thanks for sharing. - Geoff
Great vid! Did you have to air down much for the trail?
Thanks! I don’t think you need to air down for this one. I always do anyways so it’s a smoother ride - Geoff
@@Colorado4x4 thank you for your help! Your vid provided good guidance for me!
@nikoazucenas1989 I’m glad it could help!
I like how the Jeep just vanished at 24:44.
And it was never to be seen again 😂😂😂
Good job mate
Back in 2011 I rode up that on my mountain bike. It too 7:15 to reach the sign at Engineer Pass. Weather came in so I rode back to town the same way and it only too 1:20 but man that was fun. I'd like to bikepack the whole loop next time.
Go to Aspen. Carry your bike up over Buckskin pass. The bus will take you as far as Maroon Belles. Once you hit the top it's all downhill except for the brief journey up to smowmass lake you'll want to make. They can pick you up in olde Snowmass.
Great video! Thank you for not adding music!
Thanks Dale! Thanks for watching - Geoff
Do you think the hoist would hold the tent for a long period of time?
Aaron, I don’t know. You can probably find the owners manual in PDF form online and see what it recommends. I wanted to add backup straps just because my tent would be hung for long term winter storage and it weighs about 180 lbs and people and kids were walking under it in the garage and I didn’t want it to fall and kill someone. - Geoff
@@Colorado4x4 ok so just adding the straps is just a added safety feature

Hey idk if you'll see this as the video was posted a while ago, I'm looking at this trail as a possible weekend trip or maybe even day trip. OnX is saying its a 7/10, just curious on what rig you're using and how difficult you'd rate it
This trail is definitely a day trip. What are you driving? Trail ratings are extremely subjective and I would not agree at all with that OnX rating, but my 10/10 trails in my mind would be Pritchett Canyon and Sand Hollow stuff. With that said, any high clearance 4WD rig can run this trail with some good driving skills. I’ve seen a lot of stock Tacomas up there and rigs like that. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive a 4Runner or something like that up here. Keep in mind that this trial opens late usually. The last stretch to the lake doesn’t usually melt until July, but we will see what happens this year. We haven’t been getting much snow. - Geoff
@@Colorado4x4 I have a 2001 Jeep XJ on 31s no lift. Ive done Red Cone in it on bald 29s (with lots of help from veteran 4x4ers) so i feel somewhat confident in my driving skill. Im looking at more summer time for a trip and by that time ill have my lift. Thanks for the reply!
@@TannerWilliams-ci4dd you are golden my brother. I love XJs. If you did Red Cone then this trail is no matter for you. Red Elephant Hill has gotten harder the last couple of years so I wouldn’t go up that way. Send it! - Geoff
Awesome video. Great experience, super well explained. Thank you....I am building confidence to try and tackle this trail.
Thanks!!!
Well done video - I very much appreciate the tour! I appreciate your commentary and also I liked the long stretches of silence - was like being out there and good to hear the engine.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Brake on an open diff causes the free wheel to lock and the diff will send the torque to the other wheel, which has traction. It’s not an ABS thing. Great video, thanks for putting this together
Thanks!
Awesome trail guide! Very detailed. I know this was a lot of work & it is very much appreciated. Looking forward to the remaining parts of Hell's Gate & hoping you did some other trails in the area as well.
I appreciate your comment. - Geoff
This was our favorite trail. Sometimes didn’t get over until well into August because of snow around the London Mine area. The west side is a bit narrow pass on. Thanks for the memories.
Thanks for watching!!! It’s a super duper trail. - Geoff
Awesome!
in 2001 july , i got my crown vick 1988 up to where the river was near top , almost got stuck turning around , nearley torn my car up .. but i was very determaned ..

😜😜 I’m still laughing too LOL. Cheers!
Good memories!
Amazing video. Hoping to do this trail over the summer, but only have a lifted F150 and a Rivian - both on 34's. And neither want body damage.
Thanks Reed! The hardest part is that gate keeper section that you see in the video. Just climb the rock like we do in the video and hopefully you won’t slip off. Air down those tires so you have some good traction and just go slow. - Geoff
Potato drone?
What is that
Thanks for creating this nicely done video! It is very helpful for planning and fun to watch. Good job!
Thanks!!!
I just discovered the channel this week, and man, you really have it together. I've been looking far and wide for videos that break down difficult trails/obstacles step by step, and I found my spot. I'm tired of seeing beauty shots of trucks rolling over obstacles on other channels, just vanity with little instruction. Your channel is like the Master Class version! Keep up the amazing work.
This is the coolest comment that I have ever received on KZread. Thank you so much for your kind words. I got burnt out on doing these trail guide videos and needed to take a little break. I thought they would have done better on KZread but oh well. I’m planning on finishing up the last couple episodes for Hell’s Revenge soon. Thanks for your support! - Geoff
Great video, can you tell me the name of the music? Thanks
Thanks! All tracks are from Musicbed.com. It is a subscription service for music licensing for videos. The first track is by Tony Anderson and its called The King. The rest of the songs are from a band on there called Utah. - Geoff
Thanks, Again great video.
I have been doing this ride for 50 years. Always on a motorcycle. Go figure.
