Glenn Gould

Glenn Gould

Glenn Herbert Gould (25 September 1932 - 4 October 1982) was a Canadian pianist who became one of the best-known and most celebrated classical pianists of the 20th century. He was particularly renowned as an interpreter of the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. His playing was distinguished by remarkable technical proficiency and capacity to articulate the polyphonic texture of Bach's music.

It’s not the unfinished fugue, and it’s performed horribly, please stop the GG cult nonsense

Even with the gaffe, no one has played the piano and Bach like Gould and no one ever will. The mark of a true artist and a beautiful soul.

Well, I think that’s strongly stated-how will we know if GG’s genius for Bach is ever surpassed?-but Gould’s technique allowed him to control the enormous resonance of the grand piano so that every single note of the beautifully intricate counterpoint is as clear as crystal, which is the whole point of listening to Bach’s music.

Total nonsense. Even offensive to musicians who really understand the music by Bach.

@artje123 How many of Bach's works have you recorded to a major label? How many true artistic musicians are your contemporaries?

@@erandolph84 how is that relevant to the discussion. You’re stating that nobody will ever play Bach like Gould. Just say that you worship Gould and many people will understand. I personally can’t listen (nor watch) any of his dreadful recordings, so I strongly disagree with everything you wrote. I now see that you added “in my opinion” later and now I can live with your comment.

Okay so you guys made a boo boo. But I will say I love how Glenn performs the unfinished - he leaves it that way and perpetuates the beauty, the mystery, the wonder, the question of how it might have been if Bach had been able to do so. And if you do post Contrapunctus XlV, I think it would be better to post it in its incomplete entirety rather than in a short ❤🎉😊

I love and respect Glen Gould as one of the finest pianist ever born and raised on our old planet, but being equipped with ears and brain able to testify the existence of such beauty as Sir Yehudi Menuhin singing from 14:49 til the end of the adagio "espressivo" with his marvellous instrument and gentle, maybe never witnessed again any more, astonishing talent, is something that always brings shivers or tear drops, Im afraid. And I know, listening to the respect Gould had answering with caution to these lines, that Beethoven himself also wished to hear both these great human beings.

Gould approach to Mozart was oriented more toward harmony and structure and in the last sonata he uses too accentuated staccatos which was his signature style of course, but what works in Bach doesn’t necessarily work with other composers. However, in my opinion best interpreters of Mozart use more legato in their approach, making his harmonious works sound smooth and ethereal, and less cerebral.

Anyone know which Steinway this was? Must have been a CBC standby easy to move into place, since it's not CD 318. The black keys look very faded. The action must have suited Glenn, though, or he would have rejected.

What a stupid statement!!!We can put it the other way.Why Gould became a bad piano player???I don't like his piano-playing anymore.Especially his playing of Bach music.Svjatoslav Richter plays Bach much better than him.Gould is just an eccentric. That's all.
