I've loved GG and listened to him for decades. I still recall the first time I listened to his second recording of the Goldberg Variations and thought there were people outside my room humming along to the music. Took me a couple minutes to realize that it was Gould himself captured on the crystal-clear digital recording. I own DVDs, VHS tapes, and most of the Sony catalog on CD, along with a lot of the older stuff from CBS records on CD, etc. I was an early member of the Glenn Gould Foundation including the first issues of Glenn Gould, the Foundation's magazine. I'm at a loss for words in describing my reaction to what I'm seeing here. My first question is, of course: Is this what Glenn Gould would have wanted or supported? I don't think it is. Why? Because I don't think Gould saw himself as a cultural icon to be venerated by the people I'm seeing here. I think he would find it humorous, illogical, and strange, but then again, Glenn was all those things himself, in some regard. The 'potential' benefit to society is that more people will be exposed to Glenn Gould the musician, the performing artist, the writer, and the wit. The 'potential' to degrade Gould's image is also high. I am withholding judgment for now, but I'm not excited by the production value of what I've seen here so far. I hope future installments demonstrate a significant increase in quality, both with the video, and audio. I honestly thought this whole enterprise was a joke when I first saw it, but no. We shall see what transpires. ~ JM

Since when G.Gould is illogical ? At my knowledge, which come from the documentaries in which he participated, evey decision he taked about how to interpret the music he played were logically deducible from the principals in which he believed. But may be that's not what you really meaned ?

@@fractalphilosophorum9405 Point taken! In using the word 'illogical,' I was referring more to this 'remixing' enterprise, and not to Gould the artist, or the man. However, I do think many people thought of Glenn as eccentric and/or illogical (who wears a coat, hat, gloves and scarf in warm weather? Who plays a Brahms piano concerto with Leonard Bernstein at half speed on national television?), but I agree that word is not a good descriptor of Gould himself.

True. I feel like they need to do their research and even though experimenting is ok, they still need to respect Glenn Gould as well and think about the pros and cons too. Even though we may never know whether Gould would’ve wanted this or not, they really needed to think this through!

Glenn Gould "retreated" to recording because he thought the audience was "unkind". During his performances he would sound as if he were in practice(counting grunting, moaning along with the notes) . Some people walked out, the critics were not kind to him. He withdrew from performances in front of live audiences. He was a phenomenal musician:His Bach like no other, His Beethoven only second to Alfred Brendel and his Mozart is refreshingly different. Two great books on him: A Romance on Three Legs and Wondrous Strange.

Yeah, sadly a lot of people don’t like it when a musician ‘dares’ to show a lot of originality or eccentricity. I actually really like the humming I’d hear in his music and the way he’d play the piano. He loved music which you could tell by the way he’d play. That’s quite sad how the audience drove him to retreat like that.

At minute 2:13. It is very interesting. He says that today everyone can be an artist with a smartphone. THERE IS THE PROBELM. Art or being an artist no longer requires effort, time, absolute dedication and enormous passion. Anyone can be an artist. That's a problem, mediocrity is born there. Anyone has an opinion, anyone knows, anyone consumes and anyone can be what he decides just by putting it in a description on instagram. That is the problem, the effort and passion are over. Today it is better to order food than to make it. With that they have everything. Art goes from bad to worse. It makes you want to not live seeing that people really take this as art. It is not the absolute truth, it is my opinion.

"if you have a smartphone you have the ability to be an artist" well it all depends on what he means by an "artist"( he didn't use the word"artist", but he sayed "musicien", "photographer", ... which we assume are included in "artist"). If we assume an intuitive definition, his statement is clearly false. A smartphone is just a tool, it's like saying : "if you have a piano at home you have the ability to be a pianist" and if you take 2 minutes to think about it, it's totally wrong. Yes you can take very high definition (in the amount of pixels sens) photos and vidéos with a smartphone today, but that's clearly not sufficient to be considered as a photographe or an artist. It take time and effort to achieve beauty. Having a smartphone is just a necessary condition, BUT IT'S NOT SUFFICIENT. Listening to the non sens this man speak in the video, I will assume, probably, that his definition of art is very low. And now it makes sens to say "if you have a smartphone you have the ability to be an artist" because apparently the man in the vidéo include random things in the word "art".

💯 true, you couldn’t have said it better. I’m sick and tired of all the mediocre, “modern” music around me it’s literally everywhere! Everyone seems to be enamored with the latest trash when there’s much better, tasteful music out there that it’s limitless! There has almost become a blinding ignorance and a lack of taste in music in today’s generation as compared to that of a 100+ years ago...pretty sad if you ask me, but it’s the truth (along with my opinion, no offense).

@@fractalphilosophorum9405 Some of the biggest records in the world are recorded on phones these days. @@division8871 Even if we assume what you said, that doesn't imply that what people will produce with the current technologies on their hands will have any quality. I know that the definition of quality is subjectif, but let's say we use your definition of quality, having the technologies of today at the hand of people does not impli that those people will produce something appreciable by you. And that's what I was saying, the tool does not impli that a carpenter is good at doing his job. It certainly improve his creations, but without skills any tool is useless.

@@division8871 And for the fact that Gould wanted his listeners to be able to modify at will his recordings, I'm not sure how much time in his life he was for that idea, but it's a little bit naive. Why I say that ? Because this idea has some hypothesis that aren't sure : 1. Listeners want in fact to modify recordings at their tastes. 2. Listeners will modify recordings to create new interpretations frequently. Hypothesis 2 is important, because what's the point of giving people the ability to modify recordings, if they will stick to one recording ones they found one that they love. And I highly doubt that average listeners respect those 2 hypothesis. But I mighty be wrong.

Gould probably wouldn’t disapprove as he was fascinated by media. But your stating at the outset that you barely knew who Gould was, and that you created your proposal on the fly lends an air of flim-flam or amateurishness to your venture that sets the bar pretty low. Is that what you intended?

Classical music fans need humility; the puffed-up way they're complaining about a hip-hop remix of Bach's music is unnecessary. Jazz musicians have "remixed" Bach and other composers, what's wrong with hip-hop? "Offensive"? It's just frickin music, dude. And I say this as an ex-classical pianist and a daily listener of GG.
