In defense of JM here, I have several issues with this project, speaking as a long-time fan of Glenn Gould. 1) The Estate of Glenn Gould has promoted this project. Why? No answers there. We can assume this is a money-making venture, so is this a legitimate artistic project, or is it driven by a financial interest? 2) The artists making the project don't seem particularly trained in classical music, nor particularly interested in music theory. So, is this project about Glenn Gould's music, or is it about his image, and his charisma, and his eccentricity? If it's about using his image and charisma (which god knows is one reason why I was so intrigued by him), then this is about imagery, and this is why so many worldwide GG fans object, when Glenn's music has been the focus of our interest in him, and his charisma has been a fascinating aspect of that musical genius. 3) My expectation is that the record will selectively use small samples of Glenn's work, which is fine. Maybe 100+ seconds of recorded material, looped over and over. However, taking those little snippets, as a backdrop for a hip hop album, with or without vocals, is not an adequate justification for trying to use Gould's image to promote a hip hop record as a profit-making endeavor. Rant complete. Sorry for the long post.

Definitely agree, although a minor point in their defense, it’s perfectly legitimate for artistic projects to be conceived or supported by financial interests, so long as those interests don’t overly interfere with the art itself. Of course, this does not seem to be the case here.

Nobody cares if you make your own remixes or whatever. The main problem is taking over GG's channel, and exploiting IP laws to promote your own version. GG talked about empowering the listener. Can any of us post a video on this channel to promote our newest commercial venture? How about using your own channel and promoting the album using your name instead of his. Very few people would mind in that case.

I understand and respect what you are trying to do but it shouldn’t be done on the Glenn Gould channel just for more exposure. What made Glenn Gould great was that his music spoke for itself, so let your music speak for itself and don’t use Goulds official channel as advertisement. Please I beg you...

Glenn Gould was a perfectionist! He spent many years too perfect the recordings he did. If it ain't broken don't fix it some folks say. Well these guys broke it really bad. This is really bad and a shame. These persons that are doing this are very disrespectful against Glenn Gould's legacy and his recordings he spent so long time too perfect. Do you realise how much work he put in those recordings? Only the two books of the Well Tempered Klavier is about four hours. This is cruelly, disturbing and disrespectful against Glenn Gould.

How I See it, it's not that these all haters dont like your Interpretation or even your music. It's that you take that Channel(from who ever has the rights on the Channel), and post your album and the promotion for that in his channel. I das that a uninvited guest Channel exist since 6 years, or so? I'm sure, almost nobody would have a problem if you had take the chance to post one promo video on the Office Glenn gould Channel, and link to your own channel. Greetings, Styx

I understand that viewpoint for some fans, but in your mind did this guy hold a gun to the heads of the Glenn Gould estate and force them to promote this project on this platform? My guess is no. So it seems a little unfair to blame the artists for something that was likely approved by a lot of people behind the scenes.

@@marybee5947 Not at all. I only evaluate the overall situation. The introducing of their project, the channelpicture, the storyposts... At all im interested in this howl project, but it feels a little bit like a artist or his management, would like to have a wider range. Dont matter if it was a big buissnes plan on purpose, or just a friendly favor, (or something in between) the artist does get an advantage. I think its simply the wrong target group.

As a member of what I presume is your target demographic (18-24, 15-49 more generally), I can say that I wholeheartedly disapprove of this project. It’s less a matter of “vandalizing a masterpiece” (although that is still an issue) than it is a blatant cash grab with no substance behind it, which is rather distasteful in any context. Sure, Gould was a supporter of all sorts of change, but only change he saw as good. The assumption that he would have enjoyed something like this simply because it’s “different” is entirely unfounded.

I feel, you could do a series talking about the greatness of Gould, something that unites us, but what you are only doing is trying to give us the image that you're a genius or some shit, that you are entitled to "destroy" (not my words) the masterpiece that are Glenn Gould records, like we live in a democratic world, nobody is going to arrest you for using Glenn Gould as a sample, and if your intention is to calm the waters, then with that attitude you can try for a hundred years and will get the same result. So, i suggest you to stop trying to justify yourselves, and focus on your process (there's only one video about that, and was a little ambiguous), or just don't do anything, because you are just destroying a very good project, possibly damaging other future projects of the same nature, at the expense of being edgy.

If you think that Bach would have thought of Glenn Gould as a vandal, then I suggest you read at least one, NOT TWO, but ONE book on what we know how keyboard instruments were played in 18th century. (And we also have some materials on how Bach could have possibly played, so do not flash your ignorance). What you are doing has nothing to do with art. What you do is creativity, experimentation, call it however you like - but it has nothing to do with Music or with mastery of interpretation.
