Is a defender going in for challenge, connects with the ball but hits it to the offside striker considered a deliberate play? Or how about in the example in the video, was it only not deliberate because the defender heading the ball was pushed by the striker? For example, wouldnt a defender jumping to clear the ball be a deliberate play, or does it just depend if there’s many bodies around him obstructing him (not including the offside guy)
@PaulSpacey7 күн бұрын
Deliberate play is a subjective decision by the referee based on whether the defender has a realistic opportunity to clear or control the ball. In the case of the video he was pushed so couldn’t clear it properly, thus it wasn’t deemed a deliberate play.

Usually referees will only demand a retake if the player entering the box is very clearly well inside and potentially impacts the keeper and/or the play after the penalty is taken. It’s always a common sense call from the ref based on the situation.

The penalty: Clear contact is not worth a penalty by definition. Football is a contact sport. If you look closely, you'll see that Acuna feels contact, retracts his leg himself and makes it appear as if Dumfries kicked his leg underneath him. He makes two moves himself to get his leg away from under his body. The handling of the ball may be open for interpretation. I am sure some refs would consider it unsporting behavior :).

What a great video! I only have one comment and that's regarding Montiel's handball. I don't disagree with you that it is a handball, but I must note that everybody overlooks the fact that there should have been a handball called against France just seconds before Montiel's handball. I am 1000% sure that would have altered the course of the game and prevented it from going to extra time.

I feel like what some people fail to realize was that the Montiel penalty SHOULDN'T have been given. Yes, he stuck his arm out, but if you watch the corner beforehand, you can clearly see that Upamecano sticks his hand up and the ball falls to Mbappe afterwards. By that logic the play should have been blown dead, Upamecano should have gotten a yellow card, and Argentina awarded a free kick
