Couple of mistakes by the ref: Timber during ET, who was already booked, did 3 consecutive strong fouls in less than a couple of minutes and the ref never shown him the second yellow. He should have been sent off. Then Weghorst strong foul on Messi just after his goal could have been the second yellow also (he was booked on the bench in the first half). And finally x why the 10 minutes of aggregate? There was no VAR intervention involved in the game, there were no injuries. The Paredes-Van Djik incident lasted 90 seconds in total and the penalty decision was fast and not contested. The ref should have given 8 minutes top or 9 minutes. The Netherlands equalizer came at minute 101. I can understand why Messi was so angry towards the referee.

I do agree the ref made a decent call on the handball from a neutral standpoint (in any normal match I would agree), but with how Lahoz was delivering yellow's left and right, this was the worst decision he could have made. He wasn't consistent with cards, nor did Messi really get a warning after this. The rules show although this doesn't have to be yellow, it still should be adressed accordingly, and lahoz didn't do that. I wished to see more moments in this game, because it was an absolute mess of a game and I wondered where the true fault lied in the game. (I am dutch btw). Glad to see you agree Paredes should have had red (two time yellow) and van dijk should have had a warning.

Lahoz had a poor game and lost control. I agree he should have warned Messi because although a yellow wasn’t warranted, it could still have been given for unsporting behavior. The Dutch were on the wrong end of some poor decisions and it ruined the spectacle of the game. Lahoz has this issue with so many of his games; cards and chaos. You have to wonder if it’s his attitude and approach that causes it.

To add your point on the handball, there's an example in 2018/19 UCL final (L'Pool vs Spurs) where Sissoko deliberately handled the ball (he made his arm position unnatural on purpose) and he wasn't yellow carded as well, despite it's actually in a penalty box, so it's more of a promising attack. Neymar also handled the ball to score deliberately in 14/15 UCL Final. That first foul by Dumfries was a definite foul though, i dunno why people are so egged about it. Lots of similar or even softer fouls are given. Acuna did go down too easily, but there is movement and contact to impede Acuna.

People are going very far to defend Messi. You are defending a team that played dirty since minute 1. You are defending a "football game" where any player can intentionally smash the ball with his hand if he doesn't like the action. That's a yellow card, a clear offense to allow the defense to get in place, and Messi still went after that to play the ball. Stop finding excuses. Same excuse for the guy who shot a ball at close range on the Netherlands bench to harm, provoke and lose time. In Messi's situation, if Messi gets a red card (deserved red card after 2 clear yellows), the Fifa will lose a big amount of money because he will not play semifinals or even maybe final, and that's if Argentina qualified. So stop acting and behaving like you don't understand that the referee tried his best to not book Argentinian players for a Red, especially Messi.

The ones you watch and got yellowed probably were done by a defending player, thus it may have the criteria of 'breaking an promising attack' or 'DOGSO', which rightly been carded. Messi's handball was in centre of the pitch. And yes, it is not right for Messi to did it, if he did it again, he would be yellowed as repeated foul could be carded. So this is not something that could be 'abused'. But i agree with you to be fair, Paredes should have been sent off with a direct red (or at very least a yellow). The ref was wrong in this one. @@PaulSpacey I know it's at their discretion but a ref not giving one for a blatant action like that, and half the world parroting the ''promising attack rule'' ignoring the unsportive behaviour, shows you just how much Messi can get away with(and his team as well) because it is Messi. Lahoz was terrible all across the pitch, but very much so more terrible in Argentina's favour. The penalty on 1-0 was a dive for example, and it shouldnt even have counted, another argentina player already walked into the box before Messi shot the ball, that's an illegal pen. I’m English; I have zero Messi bias. I’m explaining this to you from the perspective of someone who is/was a referee and also a player at a good level of the game. Unsporting behavior is a subjective issue determined by the match official based on the moment. The referee could have yellow carded Messi and nobody would have argued against it. But by not giving him a card, he didn’t contravene any of the LOTG or guidance.

The penalty: Clear contact is not worth a penalty by definition. Football is a contact sport. If you look closely, you'll see that Acuna feels contact, retracts his leg himself and makes it appear as if Dumfries kicked his leg underneath him. He makes two moves himself to get his leg away from under his body. The handling of the ball may be open for interpretation. I am sure some refs would consider it unsporting behavior :).

Top professionels know when it's a foul, and their immediate reactions are usually telling." good point and I understand your perspective here but remember they are different things. No objection at all usually means agreement that there is nothing to object to. An objection where every player throws their arms up at the same time is often a sign they also know it's a foul. Watch player reactions in a genuine case of a foul not being committed; they angrily go to the referee and/or player to protest. Every situation is different; good refs will use player reactions as part of decision making when it is appropriate.

Dutch guy here, but trying to be objective. We weren't the better team let's clear that. Paredes should have been given easy red which could have gave some control over this game back to the referee. Imo I would have understood if van Dijk got a 2nd yellow for the chest bump and was also send off. According to the video maker it wasn't necessary according to the rules so perhaps that one was les convincing. Even if Netherlands would have been 11 vs 10 I still doubt if they would have made it, we had a bad world cup and were only able to capitalize when the pressure was high or vs easy teams. The penalty was justified however I hate how football is sometimes more about performing for an oscar to get a penalty instead of football. He made a calculated, smart move (you can argue against this of course). It’s a foul but it’s soft.
