Referee Mic'd Up For Youth Soccer Game | Highlights

Спорт

Highlights of a U17 (B2006) youth soccer game with the referee mic'd up so that you can hear the communication with players. This video includes player interactions, important moments and mistakes made by the referee.
Note: This is the 4th game in a row (without AR’s) so movement of the official is not at the level it would usually be.

Hey Paul. National Referee (PRO2) here in the US. Couple things to help you in terms of communicating with the players. Be sure to refrain from using “coaching terms”, noticed some of the stuff you said to the players could be seen as coaching them. A key phrase we try to use are “im watching” rather than “find the ball”. I also noticed you were the sole referee with no assistant referees. With this, you have to work harder to get into position and get the correct angles. Many time you were stationary inside the center area. Instead always be on your feet and predict where the ball will go next. Run smarter not harder. Your foul selection was good from what I saw. Just work on positioning yourself into those drop zones and make yourself present. Lastly for the kickoffs, try standing NW° of the center area rather than NE°. It’s the necessary positioning in these higher level games. Overall good work and always strive to be better!

Thanks Asher. My communication style is my own and is one of the reasons I went from being an absolute nobody to being involved in officiating groups for pro and international teams in less than 2 years when I moved to the US. Rather than having specific wording that every official uses, you will find that players appreciate and respect being communicated with on a level they can relate to, particularly younger players who respond well to an ‘encouraging’ communication style. I’m a bit different to most refs in that respect; partly because of my unique background. This was my 4th game in a row (6 hours of officiating), hence my lack of movement at times. That was also partly dictated by the level of the game. For reference, my movement and fitness is on a similar level to professional players (above that of professional referees). Does that sound arrogant? Probably. But it’s true. Again, cheers for your feedback 😉

Hello, Paul! Do you watch the Champions League? If so, then what do you think about the quarter finals Milan v Napoli's arbitration? Rafael Leão made a tackle on a Napoli attacker and no penalty was given. I think the tackle was very softly on the ball, but I'd like to know your opinion.

I think you are referring to the tackle he made on Lozano. Leão gets a light touch on the ball but what probably helps him is that the ball goes in the direction of his tackle. It appears like a good tackle to the referee initially and so no foul was awarded. For VAR to overturn it would need to be a clear penalty.

Trash positioning, also coaching the players 😅

Yeah positioning was poor for some of this game as I’d already done multiple games before this one. Communication more than coaching; once you understand that, you’ll be a better ref 😉

I like how you talk to players but honestly your positioning is rather lazy

Remember this is a one-man officiated game. I don't have AR's and so my positioning has to enable me to see the play but also be able to quickly transition to judge offside at both ends of the field.

For clarification, this was my 4th game in a row (6 hours of officiating). Hence my movement is not what it would be in a single game 😉

I totally agree. I talk a bit during my games -- but its clearly not the culture (in the US). kids and coaches look at me funny -- and dont always react well (or at all to it) In hockey (both youth and pros) it is the culture and i think really helps manage the game.
