The Zoom H1 is a popular device when it comes to beginners looking to improve their audio quality. Great for a podcaster, KZreadr, musician, or journalist. It has good quality audio that you can use as a microphone or as its own portable digital audio recorder. At the end of the review we’ll do an audio quality test so you can hear what the Zoom H1 sounds like. If you’re watching this review you're probably looking for a cheap microphone or audio recorder and the Zoom H1 is one of the best that you can get for the money. It’s versatile and can be used for many different situations. It's affordable at $99, and it’s perfect for beginners or amateurs. First off, the build quality isn't great. It feels cheap because it's made out of plastic. I don’t think it’s as durable as the more expensive options, but I’ve never had a problem with mine. The good thing about that is that the plastic makes it lightweight. It can fit in your pocket. It’s small and compact, and that’s what I love about the Zoom H1. It’s portable. You can take it anywhere. It's also easy to use. It’s not too complicated. It doesn't have very many features like the Zoom H4N for example. The H1 is very basic. On the front you have the LCD display and the big record button. On the right side you have the USB port, hold and power button, delete button, play, pause, forward, back, input level buttons, and the line in so you can connect an external microphone. On the other side there's the line out for headphones and the volume up-and-down buttons for playing back your recordings. There's also a microSD slot. On the bottom there's the speaker because you can actually play back your recordings and listen to them on the device itself. On the back is the battery slot (powered by one AA battery) and three buttons: lo cut, auto level, and the recording format. It supports WAV and MP3. There’s also a tripod mount. On the top there is the X/Y stereo microphone. Now I'll show you how the Zoom H1 works and sounds. If you want record in WAV or MP3 you can adjust the format and bit rate. You can also adjust your input control (or gain). To start recording just press the record button on the front. Now here's the mic test so you can hear the audio quality on the Zoom H1. So far in this video I’ve been recording the audio with my Rode VideoMic Pro shotgun mic on my DSLR. Now let’s switch over to the Zoom H1 so you can hear how that sounds. Now you're hearing the audio from the Zoom H1 which is about 2 feet away from me with the input control set to about 60, and I'm recording in the 320 kbps MP3 format. It does sound good. I’ve used this for a lot of my videos. It does work perfectly and produces some great quality audio for $99. I do recommend the Zoom H1 accessory pack. It’s another $25 and comes with an adjustable tripod stand, padded shell case, foam windscreen that works as a pop filter, mic clip adapter, AC adapter, and USB cable so you can use this as USB microphone and you can use it to transfer all the files to your computer so you can edit in post. So that’s my Zoom H1 review. A good budget microphone that's highly recommend it.

    Interesting, I almost prefer the h1 to your rode. The rode emphasizes the deeper sounds more, but it almost sounds too deep, but I really can't say which one is better without knowing your real voice and how deep it is

    Awesome review! You're review has helped me convince myself that it'd be a great starter mic for a short film! I'm able to fix audio through post production (eq, reverb, compression, etc.) and this mic seemed to be of amazing quality that I feel it wouldn't take to much to fix audio dialogue! Thanks! I plan on planting this on a boom stick..This would work for that right? Like that adapter accessory goes on the back and that adapter would fit on a boom stick I'm assuming right? :)

    Hi, Andy, Realy helpful review. I hope to use one of these in future recordings of my partner's singing - I need an easy one to use to start with. Do you think it will also be good for my dictation? I write long hand when out and then like to read into Dragon naturally speaking to put into words. I could use this to do that when I'm out in the quite world parts of my walking world and then input the MP3 for Dragon software to transcribe. If anyone reading this can advise if they use another way of doing what I'm doing please join in.

Would I want though is to have the GoPro record on its own and plug the MOVO into the sound recorder which I would keep in my pocket, this would mean I can have the GoPro anywere in the car and just edit the audio I would record with my MOVO plugged into the sound recorder over the GoPro footage, can I plug the mic into the Zoom H1 and do this?

    Canon DSLR cameras currently own, one of the 80D, stereo, with which work performing music bands clips on the street (guitar and cajon) The fact is that, although I think the audio of them very good, especially the 80D that the mics are in front of the body, I decided to invest in a tape recorder to further improve my audio capture ... Well, where is the question: I bought so well spoken Zoom H1 and I opted for it instead of the DR-05 because of the microphones in XY and in this case was expecting a much better audio than recorded by so badly spoken mics internal of DSLR ... My surprise: Audio Zoom H1 was worse than the 80D ... lower and with a more muffled sound ... SET: Both mics were in automatic mode, the same distance as the subject (since the H1 was on camera shoe) ... The only difference is that I configured the H1 to better quality WAV and camera I was recording in. MP4 (not MOV) ... The Zoom H1 was wearing a Eneloop rechargeable battery. (I have heard that for use in burners, is not indicated rechargeable battery, is that right?) Could you help me in what may be happening friend? Does my Zoom H1 came defective? Thank you.

    If you are looking for a recorder to recording in close proximities, such as a small or medium size room, this recorder works wonderfully: You get nice, clean sound. However, I wanted a new recorder for recording lectures in a large lecture hall on a college campus. I though the these new mics would pick up sound wonderfully; I was wrong. Even with the input level set to 100, the pick up was very weak. My other digital recorder did a much better job of picking up sound. I would recommend this only for recording in a small to medium size room.Sound level is extremely low. Obviously this can be amplified with your editing software but that's a bizarre requirement and should not be necessary. You will lose audio resolution by boosting the volume like 300% for literally every sound clip you ever make.This is a HUGE issue and I'm kicking myself for ignoring it.

    I engineer music and a friend of mine bought one. After listening to the quality it puts out. I would not recommend for any beginner to start with this Microphone. Most phones today have if not the same then better quality then this device has.

    Hi, I've been trying to find the best cheap audio solution. then I found the Rode VideoMicro and I thought all my problems were solved, but I saw that it doesn't sound good when it's plugged directly into the camera, so I searched for preamps (which are super expensive, and the cheap ones don't seem good at all) and then I thought that maybe I should just buy the H1 and that would be both of them right?

  • @aslye

    Yes the Zoom H1 has better preamps than the one in your camera so it's probably a great fit for you: amzn.to/2lnEtAk

    If money is not a issue and for ease of use would you choose a rodevideomic pro or the zoom h1?

  • @aslye

    @aslye

    Rode VMP is easier because it just connects to your camera's mic input jack. No need for syncing a separate recording like with the H1. But the H1 is more versatile (can be used as its own standalone recorder, used with any lav mic, or used as a USB mic with the accessory pack)

    +beerloverTV I don't use a DSLR but I did read someone with the same problem on another post. if you go to the settings of your cameras audio, there should be manual settings for the DSLR audio. it will be on automatic by default. all you have to do is change it to manual. and put the meter on 1. then you can use another microphone without the his.

  • @aslye

    @aslye

    Volume doesn't matter when recording. Volume is for the speaker volume when playing recordings back on the H1. Your input level may need to be increased and/or move the H1 closer to your mouth and/or speak more loudly. Those are the main things that will increase the audio levels.
