Thanks for the kind comments! And yes, microphone placement has a huge impact on sound quality, I'd say that way more than microphone quality (especially since nowadays 50bucks mics are more than decent).

Happy to help! The XY microphone might be good enough, but you might want to look at dual/double lav mics. Basically it's two lavaliers with one cable, so to one stereo track you get one microphone one the right and one in the left channel. Takes some work in post, but it's a pretty cheap and effective solution!
@PH1M0
3 жыл бұрын
@@RogerinFinland thanks Roger! I thought about using the XY for one person and a lav for the second, that might not balance correctly without a mixer so your solution with the dual lav may be better. I looked for a recording of this setup on KZread and found none. My question is if you do the dual, when you playback on headphones will you hear one person in one ear and the other person in the other ear? Or will it be stereo hearing both people each in both headphones? Thanks again Roger for all the cool videos !
@RogerinFinland
3 жыл бұрын
Well, you can't actually use the XY and the 3.5mm input at the same time, it's either one or the other. The only way to do "multitrack" with the H1n is to trick it to have 2 mono tracks (like with those dual mics). And yes, the monitoring will be one person in each ear. It might be possible to tell it to output a mixed mono out, but I'm not sure about that. And thanks for the kind comments!!

It's a great little device, I hope you enjoy it! When it comes to accessories, my suggestion would be to buy them when you need them. You can start by using the H1n on its own, and then see if you find limitations that would require extra accessories. For interviews, if you'll use it as a handheld microphone you don't need anything else than the device to get started. If you'll use it as a boom microphone, then you might want a stand (I have a video on using the H1n as a boom microphone). Good luck and ask away! 👍🏼😊
Great job! Thank you!

Very few recorders have a built in battery. From zoom, H1, H1n, H2, H4, H5, H6, F1, F2, D3... All battery powered. Do you have some example of one with built in battery? (Which would be a pain to deal with if it empties mid shooting).

removable batteries is king. Just buy a panasonic rechargeable
8:34 on powerbanks: beware that some powerbanks have built in auto shutdown feature. My Sony powerbank just shuts down when zoom h1 is plugged, because it doesn’t drain much power. And another note is on USB wall adapters: they may produce hiss sound. The same hiss may appear when you plug h1 to the computer as audio interface. It’s somehow connected to “noisy ground” thing, but I haven’t figured out how to deal with this.
@RogerinFinland

Good tips! I use an Anker power bank and that one seems OK with the H1n. Grounding issues sometimes are related to faulty cables/connections. I'll have to test a bit more using the H1n as an interface and see how it works for me. Thanks for the input! 👍🏻

Very good video Roger, do you know if a wireless microphone can be connected to the Zoom H1N? I say this mostly because I can't find a microphone sized voice recorder like the HollyLand Lark Max or the DJI ones (I think it's a waste of money if I buy a wireless microphone to just use the recording mode on the same microphone without the receiver). Thank you very much in advance.
@RogerinFinland
8 ай бұрын
The only way to connect something to the H1n is via the 3.5mm jack, so you'd need a transmitter - receiver system anyway.
@SuT4G4Racing
8 ай бұрын
@@RogerinFinland But in itself there would be no problems connecting a wireless network, for example. I had thought if not something similar to a power bank but that records only connected audio even if it is like the HollyLand C1 or M1 (the one with the USB connector for mobile) but I don't know anything about that either. Still thank you very much again.
@RogerinFinland
8 ай бұрын
I did take a look at Hollyland's website but couldn't (in a quick glance) figure out if the transmitters are also recorders. If they are, it's basically the same as the DJI Mic with different price and form factor. Either way, if you want to keep your action cam sealed (without any USBC device connected) you need something that can record on its own. Having a wireless microphone (transmitter) sending the signal to the receiver then plug that to the H1n feels like too many devices as possible points of failure. I'd go with a lav mic into the H1n in that case. Or just use a tiny microphone+recorder like the DJI Mic or the InstaMic.

@@RogerinFinland FYI I am currently using boya bymm1 which peaks a lot. I have to talk with a very low tone also the noiae floor is annoyingly high.
Useful & interesting video Roger. I discovered a new use for the mighty little H1n this week - it functions extremely well as an audio interface. My laptop mics are failing. H1n works brilliantly for Zoom meetings and can be powered by USB from the laptop - sound quality is way better than any headset - winning ! Is there a way to remove the handling noise in post ? I've lost a few field recordings from handling noise. Cheers, Gavin
@RogerinFinland
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gavin! Thanks for the comment ☺️ Because the handling noise is usually composed of short, fairly sharp sounds denoising algorithms won't work with it. Those work best with continuous sounds that have a fairly constant frequency footprint (think of the constant hum of an AC, or similar). A sharp noise, covers a broad freq spectrum for a short time. If you use it as a field mic a lot, might make sense to look at some grip with a shock mount (bigger than the one in my video).
@Gogies777
3 жыл бұрын

HI ALGO and also roger this helped make my choice. aces.
Excellent video, especially for non -tech savvy people like me. I recently bought the Zoom H1N and I have been using a Boya BY-M1 mic with my Nikon D5300. I want to connect the mic with the Zoom H1N and then connect the Zoom H1N to my camera, so that I have 2 audio files. 1. Which cable do I need? TRS to TRRS or some other one? 2. Please give some advice regarding an inexpensive lav mic, which is similar in quality and price as Boya BY m1, because the part of Boya BY-M1 with the battery makes it really fragile. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
@RogerinFinland
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback!! 👍🏻 To your first question, from H1n to the camera you'll need TRS to TRS cable. To the 2nd, not sure. The Boya you have does have pretty good reviews. I have the Rode SmartLav and Lavalier Go, both without battery. The SmartLav is cheaper, but you need a TRRS to TRS adapter. The Go is more expensive, sounds better (to my ear) and doesn't require adapters. Other than those two, I've got no experience with other lav mics.

Does plugging extrnal source through line in disable the mic on the zoom? Or does it serve as additional source which can be mixed with the onboard mic?
@RogerinFinland

It does disable it totally. The gain control becomes then the gain for the line input. The H1n is a 1 track device, that's why it disables it 👍🏻
Thanks for the video, gteat information. Do you use post recording software to remove underlying hiss? Im trying to use my H1n to record outdoor sounds, tibetan bowls and my voice but there is always a terrible hiss. The higher the gain - above 4 - the higher the hiss - anything below 3 and nothing gets picked up. Really frustrating. Appreciate any help 😊😊

Glad you liked it! What kind of hiss are we talking about? I use it (indoors and outdoors) with the gain at 7-8 with no problems, unless there's wind. For wind you'll need a dead cat. Not sure if my answer was I'd any help though 😅
@joestrahl6980

I have had the same problem, the hiss (noise floor?) appears at 4 and if I dial down to 3 the recording is much too quiet. Interestingly this did not happen originally but is something which started after a few months of occasional using. For nature sounds if the birds are at some distance while filming a landscape I would like to dial it up to 7 or more but then the hiss is just impossible. Are there some settings?

But in the videos I found on yt (like this one) there's hardly any noice. Is there a way to reduce it with the settings on the recorder or do you edit it in post. Please, if anyone's got any tips, that would be so great.

Glad it was helpful! About the noise, it depends a lot on how you are using it. In this video (or in any videos where I use it) I pretty much do nothing to it afterwards, and the room isn't treated either. However, the microphone placement is usually very very important. If you are recording voice, the microphone (H1n in this case) should be at 30cm ish (~1 foot) from the source (the mouth of the speaker). Then set the gain so that the voice peaks somewhere between -12 and -6dB. If there's lots of dynamic range (think of Stephen A. Smith), then rather towards -12 to be safe. If the microphone is farther away, it picks lots of other stuff that to the microphone are as loud as the voice. Not sure if this was helpful, but maybe it is! :D

thanks for the tips. I have a question! does zoom h1n record in 2 lines ? I mean 1 line would be built in zoom mic and line 2 would be external lav mic . Thanks .

Nope. It's a single track recorder. Even if it's stereo, it's only 1 track: either the XY mic, or the 3.5mm jack but never both simultaneously.
What do you think of Blue Yeti? I like this video, so I'm curious about your opinion on it.

Thanks for the feedback on the video! I haven't tried the Blue Yeti myself. Seems to get good reviews and does look the part. Also, being USB makes it a good option for streamers and online meetings I suppose. Additionally it seems that there's different polar patterns to choose from as well. My first reaction is: wow, looks great and does a lot of stuff for little money! Too good to be true. However, until I get to test one and really hear how it sounds it's all speculation on my end 😊
