    Very interesting. The shotguns sound better than the lavs *but* serve different purposes. I though the Rode sounded better than the Deity and couldn't really choose between the lavs. What was most interesting is how good the mics were on the Zoom. Unless there is a practical reason I might even be tempted to save the money and use it as a shotgun mic.

    The H1n on its own is really a fantastic device. I can see the convenience of having the device at hand and the microphone elsewhere (being a shotgun or lav) either to operate the device, or power it with a powerbank. In general, (and at risk to hurt affiliate links), buy things only if you need them. If you only want them, well... it's still fun to get new gadgets :)

    Hello. Not sure if I understand your question, but if you want to use an external microphone you'll need to plug it using a 3.5mm jack. Basically, things like the Rode VideoMicro will be OK, something like the Rode NTG-3 won't be OK.

    #1: Zoom H1n: Most pleasing to ear. Full range. Alive (thanks to Stereo-ness). #2: Deity D3 Pro (or) Rode VideoMicro. Disadvantage of D3 is it amps up bass at expense of sharpness (which VideoMicro is brilliant in). So both are #2. Personally, choosing VideoMicro, as couldn't bother having ANOTHER device to keep charged. #10: Both Laveliers are mediocre in quality (muffled, like talking through a pillow).

  • @RogerinFinland

    @RogerinFinland

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm sure it's usable, since it's fairly similar to the Deity D3 Pro (or rather the Deity is similar to the Rode). About reliability, I've had and used the H1n for a couple of years and haven't had any issues, but it's been used indoors and fairly carefully. For the price it's a no brainer (in my opinion), but if you need ruggedness the plastic built might be a disappointment.

    To record piano playing indoor, would it be better to use an external mic together with the H1N recorder which I have, rather than using the H1N recorder alone? Thanks.

  • @RogerinFinland

    @RogerinFinland

    3 жыл бұрын

    When using an external microphone with the H1n, it only records that and the XY stereo mic is disabled. For a piano, my guess is that a stereo mic is a better solution (unless you'd mic it properly with several microphones, but I wouldn't know where to start from), so I'd say that the H1n alone is the way to go 👍🏻

  • @RogerinFinland

    @RogerinFinland

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi there, yes you should be able to do that. As interface (or as recorder) the H1n is a one-stereo-tracl device. Once you plug something externally (like a lav) that's what you get. About the quality, I can't say because I haven't tried (though now I feel like I should make a video about it 😊). It also depends on the laptop, the lav and the combination. I have quite a backlog of videos, so this one might take a few weeks.

    I don't see how would you do it in any practical way. The H1n is a single channel stereo recorder, so the best you could hope for (using some jerry-rigged adapter) is to have two microphones per channel, And both channels (left and right) would have the same gain.

  • @RogerinFinland

    No, you can't. The H1n is a single stereo track recorder. It either records with the built in XY microphone, or via whatever microphone is plugged to the 3.5mm input. So, plugging a microphone to the 3.5mm disables the XY microphone. To do that you'll need a multi track recorder like the H5, H6, F3, etc.
