With the right technique I think the Zoom H1n can definitely be used to record a voiceover.

Mixing L and R also reduces the noise, because each channel has different noise and it averages signal when combined.

What continues to amaze me is the sound quality of such very inexpensive devices. It is a matter of microphone / device placement and technique, nine times out of ten.

Try connecting the usb mic to your pc like you normally would, and connect the headphone out of the usb mic to the line in of the zoom h1n using an Aux cable (3.5 mm to 3.5 mm).

Yes if you have one and not in the mood to buy a proper mic for voice (for podcast, livestream, classes, voiceover... - a cardioid mic) it can "do it" but you have to treat the audio (or "polish crap"), as this zoom gear is mainly designed as an ambient recorder, it is very sensitive and captures very detailed and loud ambient noise. If you are not using it on an acoustic isolated room and have a very very quiet PC, the recording is gonna contain very loud ambience, even stuff happening far away (car, bus passing, dogs barking, birds. etc..), your PC cooler is gonna sound like a jet engine probably...

You can also speak to just one capsule pointed at you, and discard the other capsule's signal. So in order to get mono, you don't need to mix the channels together, which sometimes creates phase issues (even though the capsules are really close together).

Thanks Julian for this video, it helps me decide what to use to record my narrations. Zoom H1n is my first dedicated audio recorder, it is intimidating to use at first but I eventually clawed it with the help of your beginners guide. Although, you don't consider this device as a pro, my narration took a giant leap of improvement when I switch from my phone to Zoom H1n.

We were surprised at how good the H1n is. You can use a pop filter or save money by putting on a wind shield (dead cat) as the wind shield will work indoors and out. Once you get the setting right the H1n does a very good job. It feels a bit cheap and nasty but don't judge a book by its cover. We have also been experimenting with mics and have found that expensive microphones aren't necessary for great sound. We have a dead cheap Huxley $14 mic that we got from Aldi and we have combined that with a Scarlett Solo pre-amp. We use Audacity to capture audio for voice-over and we are getting results that seem to be as good as using a Rode Procaster (which needs a pre-amp in order to work).

Whether a foam cover is enough really depends on how close the mic is to you and how heavy your plosives are. I mean, a foam cover is better than nothing but a real pop filter in front of the mics is going to be even more effective.

Received kodak card with my package deal, it needed formatting every time I switched it on, which also wiped all recordings, rather inconvenient to backup to another drive before switching off. I bought SanDisk card which works fine. Apart from that, no problem with the Zoom. If you are prepared to accept that a jewel can be made from plastic, that's the H1n.

There might be slight differences depending on the material of the popfilter. But these differences are very minimal. The one you can see in the video was the cheapest one I could find and it works great. :) The placement of the popfilter does make the most difference. Don't put it right on top of the mic. Leave at least a 2 inch gap between the mic and the popfilter and it will work well.

Great information! So for this voiceover application, you think it is better to combine the Left and Right into mono, rather than simply using one of the two, and deleting the other channel?

  • @JulianKrause

    @JulianKrause

    5 жыл бұрын

I would sum the left and right channels together because you are usually aiming the H1n directly at you. The mics on the H1n are in a XY configuration. For each microphone a sound source straight in front of the H1n, is at 45 degrees off axis. If you only listen to one channel it should give you more ambient noise. If you sum left and right together, they will result in a polar pattern which is on axis with the H1n. So, combining the left and right mic should result in slightly less ambient noise. Additionally combining the left and right channel will reduce the self-noise of the mics by about 3dB.

Please make a review of the H1n used as Audio Interface in a DAW ( like Ableton live 10 ) for use with 64/128 samples 44khz/24bit so I can have a reference what is the latency. Nobody is doing this, i've searched everywhere. I have a small laptop of 11.6inch from 2014, intel N3530 cpu laptop with 4GB ram and want to use it with a midi keyboard on stage using some VSTs like Arturia V collection or something similar, I want to know how bad would the latency be if I used the Zoom H1n instead of the built in soundcard. The lower I go in samples the smaller the latency but the greater the risc of crackles and sound generally breaking. I know that, also I know that differs from one VST to another, depending on the CPU load it generates. Would love to see the H1n in action at least. thank you for reading through this far :)))

Have you tried hooking your shure sm57 up to this? I'd be very interested to see how it sounds for a portable budget podcast.

Just tried it and as expected I ended up with a very audible noise floor. I mean it does work, it did record the audio of the SM57 just fine but the end result is nothing you ever want to listen to on a podcast.

@@JulianKrause Trying to find the best quality portable recorder for the sm57. My at2020 sounded great on my friends h1n, but that's because it's a condenser. I ran it through a saramonic smartrig for the 48v phantom power...then Trrs to Trs adapter into the zoom.

@@xHOTDAMNxHBx I reckon this works quite well. The problem with dynamic mics is that they have a low sensitivity and low noise floor and this really brings out the noise of the microphone preamp. I think even the Zoom H5 is not low noise enough to directly record audio with a dynymic mics. So, you want to buy a portable device which has very low noise preamps. If this website is to be belived, the Tascam DR-70D looks like a good option. www.avisoft.com/recordertests.htm

Arghhhh!! You said that the H1n "definitely is not my first choice for voiceover work"... but then you didn't tell us what you recommend. Can you do a video on your top voiceover equipment recommendations then? Maybe your top 3-4 including a budget option? I'm sure that there's stacks of KZreadrs, like me, that would love to hear your thoughts on that.

I prefer a separate XLR microphone and an XLR recorder or audio interface. But there are a lot of USB mics out there that also work well.

@@JulianKrause I'm looking more into the new Zoom F3. It is 32 bit. It seems to do as much as the Beringer USB interface you reviewed. I'm looking for low noise for my quiet low voiced meditation audios. The F3 is 127db.

Hello Julian, I'm looking to buy this microphone to record videos with great sound quality and voice recordings in my room but I still don't know if it is the best microphone for my needs. Sometimes I will be close to my microphone and sometimes I won't. I will usually use Skype and make teaching videos. Do you recommend this microphone? Thank you !

If you only need a mic, you could have a look at a cheap lavalier microphone like the JK MicJ-0044.
