Zoom H1n Handy Recorder: Connecting to a Computer + Other Observations

Фильм және анимация

The Zoom H1n is good value for money, but the documentation is a little skimpy on the subject of using the unit as a USB microphone. While it's pretty straightforward to do, I thought it may be helpful to clarify some of the terms that Zoom drops in its manual.

    I know this is old, but just in case anyone needs it: direct audio has no latency because the interface routes the audio from the mic directly to the headphones. Without it, you have to listen to audio that goes from the mic, through USB, through the DAW and then to the computer output, which always has some lag (the echo-ie sound you refer 6min into the video). I have no experience using it, but I've been to live calls were I could hear myself with a delay and it really messes with your head. I also know that for recording artists, this might mean the final audio will be out of sync. Budget interfaces have a latency from 2ms to 7ms, but usually from 5ms upwards, it's already noticeable.

    I'm just trying to figure out how to play the recording through my computer speakers so I don't have to wear a headset or listen through the tinny h1n speaker. How do you do THAT?

  • @ruimarto

    @ruimarto

    @@RichLP1 Can't say if it's possible. As far as I know, monitoring is always done with the recording device. If you record with something like a Presonus Studio 24c, you monitor plugged to the Presonus not the PC. If you record with a camera, you monitor plugged to the camera. Monitoring through the PC might be possible by going to windows sound settings and activating "Listen to this device", but it could be laggy.

    If you are having trouble connecting to the computer, first try a different usb cable. If that's unsuccessful, make sure the H1n is off before connecting to the computer. Then power up the H1n and you should see choices of Audio I/F or Card Reader. If this screen doesn't appear, I have no idea why not other than suspect cable or usb port.

    Have you tried ASIO drivers instead of regular ones. With those and monitoring from the headphones on the recorder with Direct On (as you would do with any professional audio interface, where you connect your headphones or monitors to your interface, not to your computer...hence the term interface) you will be able to record without noticeable latency.

    Thanks for the info. I have a question. I just got this recorder and when I hook it up to the computer I do not get the usb menu. I have tried different usb ports on my computer and it still just goes to the regular recording menu. It does not seem to recognize the usb. It did the first time but not any more. Could I have done something in the settings or is it just a faulty unit? If you have any ideas I would appreciate your insight.

    Try switching cables. had the same problem. I have used it regularly as a USB mic for recording a voiceover for powerpoint. I then switched to SD card to make an audio recording. When I wanted to go back to USB, the option just wouldn't come up - it kept going straight to SD Card. In desperation I tried a different cable and to my amazement the USB option is back. Both cables were from the same store and fairly new but the shorter one worked and the longer one didn't.

    The act of plugging the USB cable into a computer that is switched on seems to be the trigger for getting the Audio I/F vs Card Reader choice. Then use the up down keys to choose either. If you don't see the choice, try another USB cable, or switch the recorder off then on again and plug into the computer. Other than that, I don't know what to suggest, other than a firmware update.

    Not sure I understand the question, but the H1n will automatically give you the choice of Audio I/F or Card Reader when reconnected to a powered computer. You then have to choose which mode you want. I don't think the recorder is sophisticated enough to allow you to set a default, but I may be wrong.

    I'm not sure it's as crucial as it is with video. Just get the fastest you can find for a reasonable price. Memory is cheap now, so you can probably get premium brands (SanDisk, Lexar) for not much money.

    Unfortunately, you're not the only one to encounter this problem, based on previous comments. I haven't seen this problem myself, but there's obviously a glitch in the firmware. I hope Zoom is aware of this and has updated the firmware. You may want to look on their site for the latest update, although, admittedly, I have never checked to see if mine needs updating.

    I tested my H1n by first turning it on, then plugging into the laptop. The USB menu came up ok. Ditto with turning on the H1n after plugging into the laptop. Others seem to have similar problems, but since mine is functioning ok, I'm not sure what's causing the problem. Could be your USB cable is faulty, so it's not seeing the computer, but I'm sure you've probably tried swapping cables.

    annoying, I just bought one of these and I'm having exactly the same issue as other people, just can't get that PC menu to appear. Tried 5 different cables on 2 different ports on a PC custom built for me 4 months ago (note the cable works with other devices and it even powers up the thing with batteries out). Back for a refund, and I guess I'll keep doing this until I get one that works.

    Initially didn't work for me as well, but once switched the usb cable to a different one, it was good. Apparently some USB cables don't allow data transfer or any other functionality for that matter, other than plain charging.
