I can’t believe you posted this only a few days ago! I just randomly found your channel while looking at camera reviews and my biggest issue with starting a KZread channel was figuring out how to get better audio! I was trying to use my phone but every external phone mic I looked up just didn’t seem good enough so I assumed it wouldn’t be possible. And while I was watching your videos I was just thinking about how good your audio sounded and how badly I wanted that!! I had never thought of a gadget like this. You just mentioned it briefly in your Osmo pocket video and I said to myself “wow I really hope he has a video on that zoom thing!” And here we are!! I CANNOT wait to buy this and finally get started. I’ll invest in a better camera next :)

Booming it from above using its own mics works really well. I felt that your levels were just a bit low when you showed it on screen. I set it to ‘hover’ around -12 not ‘peak’. Means a little less headroom but you’re not going to suddenly shout in your video and then some peaks might hit -3 to -6dB. Result is an even lower noise floor. More expensive recorders are quieter so you do actually have the luxury of masses of headroom with very little noise because the preamps are really good. Recording very low with those recorders is easier with regards to noise. With the H1, the preamp is a bit more noisy so the more you can get in without peaking, the better the signal to noise.

I use it for every single video and I use the little dead cat wind muff. I personally like the built-in stereo microphones better than using the lav mic on it. I also love the auto leveler for my situation of cooking because I use various types of appliances in the kitchen and it keeps it from blowing out the audio.

I have the original Zoom H1 and it is great -- the controls are little more cumbersome and "fiddly" than the H1N, but the audio is great. My two younger daughters did their own "Two Woman Show" production of MacBeth and I recorded it with three video cameras and used the H1, aimed into the room, as the main audio track. I did record audio on the three cameras, and then in my video editing software I could sync all of the video tracks together based on the audio, I muted the camera audio and used the H1 audio -- and it came out fantastic -- even in a living room, inside. Thanks!

This is a great tool for YT'ers who are producing content for consumption. For those of us who primarily produce content for ourselves and our families, we don't even do post. We watch 90% of our content SOC and this isn't a very practical solution for someone who wants no part of post production unless producing consumable content.

I use the Zoom H6, F8, and the H1. Actually I have four H1’s. There are times when multiple inputs require the bigger units, but the H1 is the most used of the three. I carry one in a pocket 24/7 (and these days the Osmo Pocket in another pocket) and thus have the basics to record virtually anything that happens in life. Gone are the days of kicking myself for missing unexpected things because I didn’t have any gear with me. The gain dial on the front of the H1n is a great improvement in some circumstances, but I prefer the input level buttons on the side of the older model because the side buttons were exactly where the thumb rests on the dice and easier to use one handed, plus I can use manual input levels but put the H1 in the pocket without any concern that the input levels might change as with a gain dial. The H1 or H1n are both the best investment any videographer can make. They are worth their weight in gold.

I want to connect the mic with the Zoom H1N and then connect the Zoom H1N to my camera, so that I have 2 audio files. 1. Which cable do I need? TRS to TRRS or some other one? 2. Please give some advice regarding an inexpensive lav mic, which is similar in quality and price as Boya BY m1, because the part of Boya BY-M1 with the battery makes it really fragile. Thank you very much for your time and effort.

I got it the other day in the mail. Also got the foam and dead cat. Have it set a MP3 320pbs. Not sure about the wav thing. There is a 4th use. As a stereo mic directly plugged into the camera. Just turn down the camera's preamps to 1 or 2 above 0 (aka the lowest) and adjust the gain dial and look at the audio of the camera. Plug the Zoom from the green to the camera's audio port. It works really well as a powered mic. Tested on the Nikon 5300 (horrible native audio preamps) and Sony AX53 (good IMO native preamps). It sounds really good.

It’s definitely is worth the small investment for a big return on audio quality. Do you think it would be useful to pair with my M50 when using the rode wireless go? I was thinking it would still record internal, but I wouldn’t have to be tethered to the camera via the wired lav microphone. I definitely would like to see more videos on budget audio solutions. Especially something entry level using an xlr microphone and pre amp.

This can work with a Osmo Pocket and Osmo Action. The preamp is amazing. Thanks for the tip. I currently use a mixer for my S9+ with an XLR Mic

How did you get it to work with the osmo action? The adaptor isn't out yet.

Carl Kim I said this could work. It works definitely with the DJI OSMO POCKET and in time also with DJI OSMO ACTION.

Hey there, thanks for the info. but since I'm very green about audio I have to ask. . .is your Lav connected to the zoom in this video at the end? I can see the Zoom is connected but don't see another cable for the Lav. I'm still unclear if these types of devices are supposed to be used as stand alone recorders or are to be connected to the camera?? If your Lav is connected to the zoom I guess there are plenty of ports on the Zoom? And can one use a wireless Lav with the Zoom?

I record from a lav mic plugged to my Samsung Galaxy S8 phone, and it works great. Total cost = $10!

You might like to try the Zoom Q8 camera. 2 XLR combo jacks with phantom power, & interchangeable mic's to meet almost any need mount on top....records up to 4 channels of audio at once, & no need to sync in post. I have the H1 & the H1n & prefer the original H1 for lav mic use, because if the H1n's volume dial gets moved in your talents pocket, it can ruin the audio. Also, I prefer the Tascam line of DR series for a much better rugged build quality. My DR22wl is still going strong after 5 years, but both my original H1's literally fell apart.

I own a Osmo action. When DJI releases the 3.5mm adapter will you be able to plug the camera right into the recorder? This way I wouldn’t have to sync up the audio later?

I am undecided between H2N / H4NPro / Shure VP83 / Azden SMX30 / RODE Stereo VideoMic shotgun, I don't understand if H4NPro has the surround effect if other microphones are connected. With the H2N it is possible to have a 2 / 4CH surround with its integrated microphones. What do I need to do to use what advice? I register events, excursions, dialogues and film my children. Thank you

I bought the H6N about 6 years ago in college, and used it a total of twice, and I always intended to get out and make soundscapes, but excuses, you know?

I wonder if it's worth to lav in to the H1 on your belt for pre amps, then line out to the rode go to transmit. Or would that be all kinds of redundancy?
