I love your humorous, down to earth presentation. I was looking for a stereo mic for my Fuji S20 (I have the Rode Micro mono mic). I was going to get the Sennheiser, but it is pricey. I'm looking for ambient sound with travel videos. I'm now thinking about starting with the Zoom H1. I can mount it on my camera cage and plug it into the camera and either use that audio or synch the H1 audio in post. The added benefit is I could use the H1 to capture wild ambient audio to add to other videos. Thanks again!

Very good video, do you know of any voice recorder that can be placed inside a motorcycle helmet? If not, I was thinking about buying wireless microphones that have the option of being able to record within the same microphone, DJI Mic, HollyLand Lark Max, the new Rode Wireless PRO or Fulaim X5 to give a few examples. Do you know of something like that but it's just a recorder? Thank you very much in advance.

Hey. Hmm. Have you looked at the Tentacle Sync Track E? Maybe not, that requires a lav plugged into it. The Hollyland Lark Max is nice. Probably the best of the models you listed - though I’ve not yet tested the Røde Wireless Pro. Have you thought about a boom headset? Or something like this: geni.us/jhlDxA You can plug that into a recorder and it should do what you want.

Hey! Yes. I think this will work for what you’re after. It can take some high SPL. It’ll sound like it sounds when in the room. Placement will be key for a balanced sound since there aren’t separate tracks to mic everything. I think it’ll work great. Cheers!

I've been using it for outdoor field recordings for three of years, for me it is the best, providing you don't mind syncing the audio later. Why I use this is with dead cat, unlike most others there is still a sterile area around the X-Y mics as it's design keeps the windshield/dead cat off of them. With say the H2n if the wind hits the dead cat, it comes up against solid object or barrier. With the H1N it has no solid barrier behind the dead cat.

Hey thanks, Stefan! I really appreciate that!
Great video, Thanks! Liked and subscribed. Ok, you seem like the guy to ask; I was considering buying the H6 for a 3 year bicycle tour to record my Sitar (yes... Sitar on a bike), as well as vocals, some electronic devices and collecting samples. I had the idea to try the 1010music Bluebox and a mic rather than the H6. Would the H1 and the Bluebox be a good combo? Better than the H6? I am having a hard time finding a mic that can record acoustic sounds without adding some kind of phantom power device or a bunch more gear. It is important that everything can be battery powered and I am hoping to find a decent quality mic that does basically what the H1 does. I like the interface and the DAW-like aspects of the Bluebox as well as being able to plug in a bunch more stuff for jamming or whatever, I also like the idea of getting rid of most 1/4" cables in favour of 3.5mm. Any help or advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Cheers!
@davidlynch4338
Жыл бұрын
I guess part of that question(s) should be; can the H1 be used as a mic, bypassing the recording function? The recording function would be super handy, but primarily I would need it as a powered mic>stereo 3.5mm output solution.
@TheRecordist
Жыл бұрын
@@davidlynch4338 the 1010 Bluebox looks interesting. I have no experience with it, but after a cursory look, it seems like a great recorder. I would not use the H1 as a mic because the mic is analog and then it converts to digital inside the H1, then it would have to be converted back to analog and then output to the bluebox which would again take the analog signal and convert it to digital again. What is your budget for a recorder and what do you need it to do in total? An H6 is good if you have several XLR mics that you want to plug in and record simultaneously. If you need several mics simultaneously then it’s good. If you’re looking for a compact, battery powered recorder that has nice stereo mics and money isn’t an issue, I would track down a Sony D100 or similar. But the Sony doesn’t provide phantom power. It DOES have plug-in power though, so very good for small electret style omni mics like the Clippys. The H1 has no phantom power either, but it does have plug-in power. Just crappier XY mics than the Sony. The H5 and H6 have phantom power built right in. So you can attach XLR condenser mics, or use the XY capsules or both. The H5 has two XLR ins for any type of mic and can be used in addition to the XY mics either separately or at the same time for a total of 4 channels of simultaneous recording. The H6 has two more XLR ins for a total of 6 simultaneous recording channels. I’m not sure how many channels you need when not doing the sitar bike tour. The Bluebox looks really good, but it does not have phantom power. But Together with a stereo pair of Clippy mics terminated in a stereo 3.5 connector, you’d have a compact recording setup. But those are omni mics and not directional. It will pick up the whole surrounding at the same time. If you’re looking for the highest quality stereo recording in the smallest device, without being able to have more than two channel simultaneous recording, it would be the Sony D100. If you don’t need that high of quality and are good with a decent small and light recorder with no additional simultaneous recording, then the H1 is fine. If you need stereo compact recording PLUS the option of adding more mics, the H5 or H6 will do you well, depending on how many additional channels you’ll need. If it were me, and I wanted to tour on a bike and record my playing, I would opt for a Sound Devices MixPre 3 II or even an H5 and two Line Audio CM4 mics with a little stand. Yes, it’s a bit more cabling and fuss, but the audio would be great. I hope any of this will help you. If you could provide me with any additional info, I could help further. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

I am all set up at home for everything I need, but I'm trying to narrow down a bicycle/battery friendly set up that can be powered by battery banks charged with dynamos. The Bluebox seems like the closest thing to a DAW that I can find. Normally I do everything in Ableton live, so I am hoping the combination of the Deluge and the Bluebox will get me close. Which Clippy mic were you thinking? I have looked at a few of them and they seem to need phantom power or plug in power. The Mixpre-3 looks awesome, but not what I am after for late nights in the tent. Budget wise, it isn't really an issue, it is more that it check these weird boxes... For the Deluge and the Organelle, they work directly into the Bluebox at line level, but I need something for vocals and the Sitar. Can you think of any analog signal path mic that is battery powered? I was looking at the Rode NT3, but the guys at 1010music said it won't work because it has no preamp... So, just to be clear about the H1n, it is analog in at the stereo mic but then gets converted to digital before the headphone jack? Basically, I know the H6 will do what I want, it is just that I have my doubts that I will have much fun working with it. The Bluebox is much closer to the way I want to work, but the mic issue is a tricky one. I don't want to have an endless dongle-conga-line of battery draining devices failing and stopping me from playing music... Thanks so much for your help and advice!

@@davidlynch4338 ok. So the deluge will work great with the Bluebox because it has line level outs. But a mic will be a problem. From what I could find, the Bluebox doesn’t even provide plug-in power, so even the Clippys won’t work. The NT3 requires an XLR cable to work, and the Bluebox doesn’t have any XLR connections. The H1n converts analog to digital and then back to analog for you to hear through the headphones. It’s more stuff you don’t need to carry or worry about the batteries. Honestly, the H6 seems like the one for you. I know you dislike the OS and prefer a more DAW approach, but we’re talking about batteries that can easily be swapped or charged, or even not use the batteries and instead plug in a USB charger. It has plug-in power for Clippys or any other lav mics. It has XLR ins for any mics. It has phantom power built in. It has 1/4 inch inputs for instruments like the Deluge. It has a click track (metronome). It has a tuner. It can record 6 simultaneous tracks. It can double as an audio interface to use with your DAW. You can overdub. And best of all it has built in X/Y directional stereo mics that can be swapped out for other mic cartridges. All built in to one unit. To go with the Bluebox, you’re going to need other gear and more power requirements. That’s my advice. But again, I’ve never used the Bluebox. I have the Zoom H5 and even that would work, it just doesn’t have that flashy color screen and 6 inputs and a few other features. So that’s what I think. What do you think?

@@davidlynch4338 oh and the Clippys I recommend are the EM272 omni mics stereo pair that together terminate in a single stereo 3.5mm Jack that gets the power from plug-in power. Which the H6 will provide. If you want to go even quieter with the Clippys and don’t mind the large XLR connectors, and you were going with the H6, I would get two single Clippy XLR mics.
Great stuff as always, thanks. Quick question. I have one of these for recording the sounds of automobile engine noises. I am looking for an affordable lav mic that I can tape to the rear bumper and connect to the H1n sitting in the trunk. Any recommendations on a good, affordable lav mic for the purpose?

lol what a quirky presentation. I've had the H1 for 13 years and looking to upgrade, so this is helpful, thanks. Given the quality of your production I'm surprised you don't have more subs.

Hahaha. Right?? Thanks for watching!
Audio gear is indeed special and GAS is very, very real, any new personal sound kit gets smuggled into the house then labelled as work gear if my contraband is intercepted and inspected by the old trouble and strife 😂 My little H1n doesn’t get much use these days as my work flow is now 32bit float but it did make me a Zoom user as I acquired better audio equipment. It’s great value kit 👍 Another great review 👍

Hey thanks! I know all about the smuggling. 😉 I also am a 32 bit guy. I use the Sound Devices MixPre 3 II for my serious stuff. But for sound collecting (which is all the time in life), I always have the H1 handy. It’s with me daily. Thanks for watching!
More renditions of Drunken Sailor please! 🏴☠ I am a proud owner of a zoom H1n since ~2020ish and had no idea it could do that. Thanks for the great video!

First-time viewer, I think the Red version with the Red port is kind of an oversight. I appreciate this video, I forgot I had this recorder and need to capture audio from weddings this season. We dj a lot, and apparently, people want proof. Personally, I like the mystery when I pay someone a bunch of money for something I only plan to do once.

Haha. Of course! It’s a handy little recorder and the more you work with it, the more you can master it (including its limitations). Cheers!
Great video thanks. Would the H1n be suitable to record a choir containing about 30 voices and what settings would be best. Thanks

Hi there. Thanks! Yes, the H1n would work well for a choir. I’d set it to 24 bit, 48kHz, and then have the peaks hitting at -12 to -6dB. Be sure to mount the device center and on a stand. Do not touch the unit during recording since it’s sensitive. Should work pretty good!
I have 64gb card inside of H1N and it works😊
