Thanks for this, and also the limiter tip. Exactly what I needed to remotely diagnose why my colleagues recordings are coming back to me with a high noise floor. I was going to suggest that the low level 'clipping' was just quantisation distortion. But i notice that the file you are showing us is 24bit. Is the original file recorded at 24bit or 16bit? If it was 24, then this is indeed odd... Good to know! Many thanks

Thanks for your video, I'm very new to recording and was wondering roughly what settings (especially input, gain & limiter) to use for a loud rock musical without getting distortion. Confirm that! I have done a similar test today and found out that the heir preamp lvl, the better recorded sound quality you have (less noice). At low preamp lvl you get low noice at first, but after post production it will be increased because the amplitude of useful signal will be at the same lvl as noice.

Please, consider firmware updates, released after this video was uploaded. Might be there some issues fixed. Mine H1n's firmware is 1.21 and I observe just linear noise increasing/decreasing and no jumps on 6 5 transition (just by simple headphone test).

Same here. I have 1.21 firmware and there is no recognizable white noise from 0 to 4. It started to increase around 5. Until the 6 it is still ok, but the 7 - 10 is just awful. I can´t imagine to record natural sounds with that amount of white noise.

Hi, Like the video, but still have a question: what would you recommend for loud motorcycle recording? Use the H1n in backpack….been thinking to mount under the seat on outside……! I recorded one video, but getting a pops and mybe to loud….?! It’s on my channel, last video….! Settings I am using: Wav 96k /24bit Gain: 5.5 Low cut: off Limiter: off Auto level: off But in video….getting occasionally some pops…..and think it’s too loud….that in back pack, it will be louder once mounted under the motorcycle seat outside…..! TIA

Thanks for this informative video. I believe this has a digital limiter so the limiting actually happens after signal conversion, meaning you've already distorted the signal. To me that means it's mostly useless and should be avoided at all costs.

When you’re giving those numbers from 10 to 0, are you using the setting on the knob itself as those numbers? Those knobs are not calibrated well if that’s the case. I would like to see your data based on what setting your choosing on the DB meter?

What should the input levels be on the screen meter on Zoom? Manual says peaks at -12. Any thoughts here? I recorded a band live with it and don't remember what the roller knob was set to but the level was around -12 and it doesn't seem to have background noise.

Nicely done, good info thanks. I think maybe the noise step is because the H1n (and the H1) has a mic/line input jack. There is no mic/line setting so could it be the lower gain with higher noise is designed to be used with much higher line level signals? That extra noise would likely not be heard with a consumer line level signal would it?

At first I also thought, that there is some kind of analog attenuation giong on. But strangely enough, the H1n will always clip at an input signal of -3dbu. There is no aditional headroom benefit in the 5.5 to 3.5 range. So, the higher noise floor remains a mystery... On this note, I found it interesting to see that there is just no way to directly record professional line level at +4dbu without clipping. Only consumer line level at-10dbV will be fine. In the end you´re still correct, when someone feeds a consumer line level into the H1n the noise floor will be around -93dBFSA, so nothing to be worried about.

Julian Krause 2 Makes sense. I would never expect something like the H1 to be able to take in a pro line level of +4 dBm. That it can take -10 dB and do OK is more than I expected. Thx for the data. Good to know.

That is helpful, but without a theory we are missing a lot of useful alternatives. AFAIK the low range of gain is only useful to cut background noise for close-micing. It's the equivalent of recording under a pillow. This might play a role in their thinking - but I can't guess, and it would be nice to hear it from the engineers. As for the bump in noise level at 5.5-3.5, I have to think it's the same actual noise level in the recording, but that the monitor sound is louder. I can't think of any reason why the fundamental noise-floor should change. The only way to tell this is to listen to it with a constant background and close-mic input as well. Naturally all three should increase 12Db. Otherwise, these both seem too complicated to think through!! I also can't think of any reason from a circuit perspective for why the 0-3.5 range should change modes, unless it does something positive, like (guessing) a noise shelf (cutting out distant sound.) Does the H1 have this distinct mode? BTW, I suggest another test include an external (stereo) mic to see (for sure) if that input circuit is the same.

I use a H1n (with attenuation cable) and Xenyx 1202FX mixer - home studio set up. I set my levels on the zoom as you describe but the gain for each track on the mixer is not used at all and the meter levels on the mixer barley go above the first green dots. The volume is low on the recorded tracks and I have to amplify the gain on a wav editor… Should I be finding a happy medium between the mixer gain levels and H1n or only use the levels on one or the other? If I do use the gain on the mixer then the gain on the zoom would have to be decreased.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I conducted the headphone test. But I heard more noise going up from 5 to 6. Then as I went higher, the noise continued to increase. I thought it was supposed to go up going from 6 to 5 and the noise was supposed to increase going further down to zero.

I am keeping on investigating on your findings with the equipment à my disposal. In order to test, on a standard way, the xlr input of a bigger recorder, we set a dummy xlr plug with a resistance of 150 ohms to mimic a "standard" dynamic microphone. What would you recommend to be the equivalent dummy 3.5mm stereo jack to test the same on the records with a mini-jack input ? A simple shortcut between the mass and the ring/tip would give no resistance, therefore I guess that this would not really represent a typical lavallier microphone, correct ? Shouldn't we solder a resistance (in that case, what value?) between the sleeve and the ring, and another one between the sleeve and the tip of the mini-jack (or shortcut the tip and ring, then solder a resistance between that bridge and the sleeve to get the same signal on left and right) ? What do you think ?

Hey, testing 3,5mm devices seems to be a bit different from XLR based devices. You typically do not want to mimic a dynamic mic, as nearly all 3.5mm mics are condenser mics. You could just short the input of a 3,5mm recording device and this will at least give you the voltage-noise the preamp creates. I´ll look into this topic in more detail in the future and keep you up to date!

very right. As I mentioned a bit later, I tried to mimic an electret mic as most lapel mics are using this technology. I finally opted to a 560 ohms resistance shortcut on both the left and right channel. that seems to be working ok. I could confirm the drop of noise floor at level 37 on the H1, above 5 on the H1n and two distinct drops above 2 and above 4 on the H2n. I also tested the 3.5mm input of the H6 and found no drop of noise floor. it seems to be growing steadily from 0 to 10, but that was a quick test so I may want to double check this.

I know this is an older video but I get terrible preamp noise with my H1N. Maybe the unit is defective. I mostly record very quiet natural subjects, though, and the hiss is present at all levels of gain.

Zwischen 5 und 6 höre ich am Kopfhörer keinen plötzlichen Anstieg an Rauschen, bzw. der Anstieg bleibt linear. Gibt es neue Chargen, die diese Schwäche ausgeräumt haben? Jetzt müsste ich natürlich auch noch ausprobieren, ob zw. 1 und 3 immer noch geclipped wird.

Judging from your graph, *the* *preamplifier's* *noise* *performance* *is* *the* *best* *at* *the* *level* *4* . Specifically, from the best to the worst, the levels are: 4, 6, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10. Of course not counting levels with digital attenuation, i.e. 1-3. If I were to make a recommendation, I would paint levels 4-7 with green colour, 8-10 with yellow and 1-3 with red.

If we disregard level 1-3 because of potential clipping, level 4 will have the lowest amount of noise. You can see this in the chart at 2:02. But level 4 has also less amplification than level 6. And this leads to a lower signal-to-noise ratio(SNR). You can see that in the second graph at 2:15. The SNR is considerably higher at level 6 than at level 4. This means, that when you record the same signal at level 4 and 6, level 6 will have a lower noise floor in your final recording. So, recording with level 6 or above is preferred.

Julian, you did a great job measuring this and I see your point. However, for real world situations, you always adjust gain to your source signal. If, after adjustment, you happen to be in the region of 4-7 you can expect the best performance of this device. On the other hand, when you connect a great microphone but accidentally switch -20dB knob, you have a low signal and must use high gain setting (9-10) on Zoom. In such a scenario the noise is -74 dB and it is not so good. For my very casual recordings I like to have -84dB or better. I'm looking forward to more great videos from you.

Hard to say... I never tested the F1, so I really don't know how good the preamp is. Btw, if you get noise in your recordings it might also come from your mic.

Because ther was no change in noise between level 10 and 9. But there was also no change in amplification. Level 9 is essentially the highest gain setting, turning it up even higher didn´t change anything, at least on the two devices which I tested.

Yes, this is possible. You can connect the H1n via USB to your PC and then use it like an audio interface. Additionally you can enable the direct monotoring feature on the H1n and you will hear your microphone with zero latency in your headphones.

You need the Røde SC3 adapter, it adapts the Smartlav+ TRRS connector to a TRS one. You can also buy cheap copy, but the Røde one is around €11, so it's not bad.

Great info! I'll run a few tests with mine and also on a h1. ...and on my h6, maybe it has the same behavior, I never noticed, but i usually have my gain above 5 or I engage the pad, so it is worth testing.

I answer to myself. I just tested my H6 with a dummy XLR with 150 ohms resistance between pin 2 and 3. When you crank the gain from zero you have a clear change of behavior at the number 3. : from zero to 3, the noise floor grows slowly ; at exactly 3, there is a visible tick in the recording, showing that something is engaged, or a different circuit, or something, whatever. Anyway, then the noise level falls by something like 6 or 7 dB, then it goes again steadily to the level 10 with no noticeable "jump". When you play with the gain knob around 3, if you go slowly up and down around that value, you see the noise floor jumping up and down with that little click. I tried it on 2 different inputs of the H6 Could be interesting that you try that also on you H5, to see if the same happens, it is said that they have the same preamps, therefore we should see the same behavior. Thanks again for your tests, this is great stuff.

Hey hanapa, I experienced a similar behavior on my Zoom H5. I haven´t tested it enough to make a conclusive statement, but if I had to guess, I would say that the H5 is attenuating the audio digitally below level 3. From level 5 to level 10 the noise performance is pretty much linear. I might do some more tests if I can find the time. But I think, if you stay in the range of level 4 to 10, you gonna be fine.

Yes. my feeling is that the best result remains between just above 3 (after the change of circuit) and just under 7. I have the impression that above 7, the noise grows a bit faster, but I haven't drawn the curve to verify this, this is only my feeling.

Test run (with an arbitrary resistance of 560 ohms on both channels) : for H1, the "clic" is exactly between 36 and 37, therefore better record with gain settings at minimum 37 and above. For H2n, there are 2 "clics", one at 2 and one at 4, both with 4 dB difference, therefore better record just above 4 and higher. On H1n, "clic" happens at 5, so better record just above 5 and higher.

I'm a little late. But here are your answers: 1. No, the H1n will stop the recording when the SD Card is removed. 2. The H1n does not charge the batteries inside it. You can use rechargeable or non-rechargeable batteries. You can also power the H1n via USB. With the a USB power source connected you do not need any batteries inside the H1n. Hope that helps!

I just bought one this month. I tried the test of turning the rec level knob while listening at full volume on head phones. Noise increased when I went from 6 to 7 and continued to increase at each rec level increment. Any thoughts?

Did you have the limiter on? Is so, the noise is always high and doesn't have a jump. Turn off the limiter and see if yuo can hear the jump in noise :)

I think, it does not make sens to compare the XLR preamps on the H5 with the mini jack preamps on the H1n. But I quickly made a few tests with with the mini jack input on the H5. It seems that the H5s mini jack input has at least 6dB less noise than the H1n.

I find this very confusing. My gain is the exact opposite to yours. So much noise at 10 and none at 0. In fact I mentioned your video while speaking to a service rep at Zoom today (I was having USB issues ... you need a USB 2.0 cord) and the rep seemed mystified by your findings as well.

Hey, your gain is working how it is supposed to work. Overall the noise floor gets higher at higher gain settings. You can see this at 2:00 in the video. This graph shows exactly that. But I´m, talking about the signal to noise ratio (SNR). That´s how high the noise is in comparison to your signal. The SNR is lower at settings below 5.5 than at gain settings above that. That´s what´s shown in the graph at 2:15.

Must be a defect. Mine works as expected. Lowest to highest just makes the mic really loud. At 10 you couldn't move a finger. I think more fuzz on upper levels.

Hey, I'm pretty sure it is not a defect, I tested it on multiple H1ns. Of course turning up the gain amplifies the sound from the mics. But between 5 and 6 the noise floor jumps. Have you tried the test at 2:30. You have to be in a very quiet environment to be able to clearly listen to the noise floor of your H1n.

@@juliankrause2105 : I just got my H1N, and with the latest firmware ( 1.19 ) I am only experiencing that sudden increase in noise when the limiter is turned off. When limiter is turned on, the noise doesn't show that increase when going from 6 to 5.

I just got my H1N, and with the latest firmware ( 1.19 ) I am only experiencing that sudden increase in noise when the limiter is turned off. When turned on, the noise doesn't show that increase when going from 6 to 5.

Yeah too high will also clip your audio. 5-8 is best.

My H1n sounds absolutely awfull. it's way too bad with high pitch sound like my flute. My Iphone is doing a thousand time better. I will put it for sale because it's a piece of junk for recording music, it's only good for voice and ambient sound. I tried all the gain settings, still sounds awful.

Well, a theory would be nice but hardly that useful. The unit has already been engineered a certain way and your video provides the practical knowledge required to make the best use of it. Thanks for this, and also the limiter tip. Exactly what I needed to remotely diagnose why my colleagues recordings are coming back to me with a high noise floor. I was going to suggest that the low level 'clipping' was just quantisation distortion. But i notice that the file you are showing us is 24bit. Is the original file recorded at 24bit or 16bit? If it was 24, then this is indeed odd... Good to know! Many thanks
Thanks for your video, I'm very new to recording and was wondering roughly what settings (especially input, gain & limiter) to use for a loud rock musical without getting distortion. For example for the same show I had used the H1 with the input set at 68 and there was strong distortion. Any help is much appreciated :)

Confirm that! I have done a similar test today and found out that the heir preamp lvl, the better recorded sound quality you have (less noice). At low preamp lvl you get low noice at first, but after post production it will be increased because the amplitude of useful signal will be at the same lvl as noice.

Please, consider firmware updates, released after this video was uploaded. Might be there some issues fixed. Mine H1n's firmware is 1.21 and I observe just linear noise increasing/decreasing and no jumps on 6 5 transition (just by simple headphone test).

Same here. I have 1.21 firmware and there is no recognizable white noise from 0 to 4. It started to increase around 5. Until the 6 it is still ok, but the 7 - 10 is just awful. I can´t imagine to record natural sounds with that amount of white noise.
Julian, could you please show what are the best settings to use when recording a band rehearsal with the H1n ?
any tipps on how to make the gain wheel not turn itself for when you put it inside your bag or into a cover? i mean any physical construction type of thing with rubber bands or something u could show?

Hi, Like the video, but still have a question: what would you recommend for loud motorcycle recording? Use the H1n in backpack….been thinking to mount under the seat on outside……! I recorded one video, but getting a pops and mybe to loud….?! It’s on my channel, last video….! Settings I am using: Wav 96k /24bit Gain: 5.5 Low cut: off Limiter: off Auto level: off But in video….getting occasionally some pops…..and think it’s too loud….that in back pack, it will be louder once mounted under the motorcycle seat outside…..! TIA
Thanks for this informative video. I believe this has a digital limiter so the limiting actually happens after signal conversion, meaning you've already distorted the signal. To me that means it's mostly useless and should be avoided at all costs.
When you’re giving those numbers from 10 to 0, are you using the setting on the knob itself as those numbers? Those knobs are not calibrated well if that’s the case. I would like to see your data based on what setting your choosing on the DB meter?

What should the input levels be on the screen meter on Zoom? Manual says peaks at -12. Any thoughts here? I recorded a band live with it and don't remember what the roller knob was set to but the level was around -12 and it doesn't seem to have background noise.
Nicely done, good info thanks. I think maybe the noise step is because the H1n (and the H1) has a mic/line input jack. There is no mic/line setting so could it be the lower gain with higher noise is designed to be used with much higher line level signals? That extra noise would likely not be heard with a consumer line level signal would it?

At first I also thought, that there is some kind of analog attenuation giong on. But strangely enough, the H1n will always clip at an input signal of -3dbu. There is no aditional headroom benefit in the 5.5 to 3.5 range. So, the higher noise floor remains a mystery... On this note, I found it interesting to see that there is just no way to directly record professional line level at +4dbu without clipping. Only consumer line level at-10dbV will be fine. In the end you´re still correct, when someone feeds a consumer line level into the H1n the noise floor will be around -93dBFSA, so nothing to be worried about.

Julian Krause 2 Makes sense. I would never expect something like the H1 to be able to take in a pro line level of +4 dBm. That it can take -10 dB and do OK is more than I expected. Thx for the data. Good to know.

That is helpful, but without a theory we are missing a lot of useful alternatives. AFAIK the low range of gain is only useful to cut background noise for close-micing. It's the equivalent of recording under a pillow. This might play a role in their thinking - but I can't guess, and it would be nice to hear it from the engineers. As for the bump in noise level at 5.5-3.5, I have to think it's the same actual noise level in the recording, but that the monitor sound is louder. I can't think of any reason why the fundamental noise-floor should change. The only way to tell this is to listen to it with a constant background and close-mic input as well. Naturally all three should increase 12Db. Otherwise, these both seem too complicated to think through!! I also can't think of any reason from a circuit perspective for why the 0-3.5 range should change modes, unless it does something positive, like (guessing) a noise shelf (cutting out distant sound.) Does the H1 have this distinct mode? BTW, I suggest another test include an external (stereo) mic to see (for sure) if that input circuit is the same.
I use a H1n (with attenuation cable) and Xenyx 1202FX mixer - home studio set up. I set my levels on the zoom as you describe but the gain for each track on the mixer is not used at all and the meter levels on the mixer barley go above the first green dots. The volume is low on the recorded tracks and I have to amplify the gain on a wav editor… Should I be finding a happy medium between the mixer gain levels and H1n or only use the levels on one or the other? If I do use the gain on the mixer then the gain on the zoom would have to be decreased.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I conducted the headphone test. But I heard more noise going up from 5 to 6. Then as I went higher, the noise continued to increase. I thought it was supposed to go up going from 6 to 5 and the noise was supposed to increase going further down to zero.

Thank you for testing this. I have a H1 and there is no knob. There are input level buttons and the setting on the screen goes from 01 to 100. I suppose i should keep it above 60 for the best SNR?

Audio noob here, i used the gain to lower the microphones input. But since im recording loud things, i had to be around 2/3. Is there an other way for me to lower the microphones input? Recording loud cars on board
I am keeping on investigating on your findings with the equipment à my disposal. In order to test, on a standard way, the xlr input of a bigger recorder, we set a dummy xlr plug with a resistance of 150 ohms to mimic a "standard" dynamic microphone. What would you recommend to be the equivalent dummy 3.5mm stereo jack to test the same on the records with a mini-jack input ? A simple shortcut between the mass and the ring/tip would give no resistance, therefore I guess that this would not really represent a typical lavallier microphone, correct ? Shouldn't we solder a resistance (in that case, what value?) between the sleeve and the ring, and another one between the sleeve and the tip of the mini-jack (or shortcut the tip and ring, then solder a resistance between that bridge and the sleeve to get the same signal on left and right) ? What do you think ?

Hey, testing 3,5mm devices seems to be a bit different from XLR based devices. You typically do not want to mimic a dynamic mic, as nearly all 3.5mm mics are condenser mics. You could just short the input of a 3,5mm recording device and this will at least give you the voltage-noise the preamp creates. I´ll look into this topic in more detail in the future and keep you up to date!

very right. As I mentioned a bit later, I tried to mimic an electret mic as most lapel mics are using this technology. I finally opted to a 560 ohms resistance shortcut on both the left and right channel. that seems to be working ok. I could confirm the drop of noise floor at level 37 on the H1, above 5 on the H1n and two distinct drops above 2 and above 4 on the H2n. I also tested the 3.5mm input of the H6 and found no drop of noise floor. it seems to be growing steadily from 0 to 10, but that was a quick test so I may want to double check this.
I know this is an older video but I get terrible preamp noise with my H1N. Maybe the unit is defective. I mostly record very quiet natural subjects, though, and the hiss is present at all levels of gain.

Zwischen 5 und 6 höre ich am Kopfhörer keinen plötzlichen Anstieg an Rauschen, bzw. der Anstieg bleibt linear. Gibt es neue Chargen, die diese Schwäche ausgeräumt haben? Jetzt müsste ich natürlich auch noch ausprobieren, ob zw. 1 und 3 immer noch geclipped wird.

Judging from your graph, *the* *preamplifier's* *noise* *performance* *is* *the* *best* *at* *the* *level* *4* . Specifically, from the best to the worst, the levels are: 4, 6, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10. Of course not counting levels with digital attenuation, i.e. 1-3. If I were to make a recommendation, I would paint levels 4-7 with green colour, 8-10 with yellow and 1-3 with red.

If we disregard level 1-3 because of potential clipping, level 4 will have the lowest amount of noise. You can see this in the chart at 2:02. But level 4 has also less amplification than level 6. And this leads to a lower signal-to-noise ratio(SNR). You can see that in the second graph at 2:15. The SNR is considerably higher at level 6 than at level 4. This means, that when you record the same signal at level 4 and 6, level 6 will have a lower noise floor in your final recording. So, recording with level 6 or above is preferred.

Julian, you did a great job measuring this and I see your point. However, for real world situations, you always adjust gain to your source signal. If, after adjustment, you happen to be in the region of 4-7 you can expect the best performance of this device. On the other hand, when you connect a great microphone but accidentally switch -20dB knob, you have a low signal and must use high gain setting (9-10) on Zoom. In such a scenario the noise is -74 dB and it is not so good. For my very casual recordings I like to have -84dB or better. I'm looking forward to more great videos from you.
Would you explain the comparison of noise produces by zoom h1n with zoom f1? I'd like to get the f1 as an upgraded gear because the noise of my h1n sounds amateur. Do you think they use similar pre-amp?

Hard to say... I never tested the F1, so I really don't know how good the preamp is. Btw, if you get noise in your recordings it might also come from your mic.

Because ther was no change in noise between level 10 and 9. But there was also no change in amplification. Level 9 is essentially the highest gain setting, turning it up even higher didn´t change anything, at least on the two devices which I tested.

Yes, this is possible. You can connect the H1n via USB to your PC and then use it like an audio interface. Additionally you can enable the direct monotoring feature on the H1n and you will hear your microphone with zero latency in your headphones.

You need the Røde SC3 adapter, it adapts the Smartlav+ TRRS connector to a TRS one. You can also buy cheap copy, but the Røde one is around €11, so it's not bad.
I don't understand. In my h1n it's just the contrary. Max noise happens at 10, and less towards 1. ????
Great info! I'll run a few tests with mine and also on a h1. ...and on my h6, maybe it has the same behavior, I never noticed, but i usually have my gain above 5 or I engage the pad, so it is worth testing.

I answer to myself. I just tested my H6 with a dummy XLR with 150 ohms resistance between pin 2 and 3. When you crank the gain from zero you have a clear change of behavior at the number 3. : from zero to 3, the noise floor grows slowly ; at exactly 3, there is a visible tick in the recording, showing that something is engaged, or a different circuit, or something, whatever. Anyway, then the noise level falls by something like 6 or 7 dB, then it goes again steadily to the level 10 with no noticeable "jump". When you play with the gain knob around 3, if you go slowly up and down around that value, you see the noise floor jumping up and down with that little click. I tried it on 2 different inputs of the H6 Could be interesting that you try that also on you H5, to see if the same happens, it is said that they have the same preamps, therefore we should see the same behavior. Thanks again for your tests, this is great stuff.

Hey hanapa, I experienced a similar behavior on my Zoom H5. I haven´t tested it enough to make a conclusive statement, but if I had to guess, I would say that the H5 is attenuating the audio digitally below level 3. From level 5 to level 10 the noise performance is pretty much linear. I might do some more tests if I can find the time. But I think, if you stay in the range of level 4 to 10, you gonna be fine.

Yes. my feeling is that the best result remains between just above 3 (after the change of circuit) and just under 7. I have the impression that above 7, the noise grows a bit faster, but I haven't drawn the curve to verify this, this is only my feeling.

Test run (with an arbitrary resistance of 560 ohms on both channels) : for H1, the "clic" is exactly between 36 and 37, therefore better record with gain settings at minimum 37 and above. For H2n, there are 2 "clics", one at 2 and one at 4, both with 4 dB difference, therefore better record just above 4 and higher. On H1n, "clic" happens at 5, so better record just above 5 and higher.
1. can the zoom H1n record even after the micro sd card is removed ? 2. can the zoom H1n using with non rechargeable batteries when connected via micro usb charging adapter be charged or does it only charge while using with rechargeable batteries ?

I'm a little late. But here are your answers: 1. No, the H1n will stop the recording when the SD Card is removed. 2. The H1n does not charge the batteries inside it. You can use rechargeable or non-rechargeable batteries. You can also power the H1n via USB. With the a USB power source connected you do not need any batteries inside the H1n. Hope that helps!
I just bought one this month. I tried the test of turning the rec level knob while listening at full volume on head phones. Noise increased when I went from 6 to 7 and continued to increase at each rec level increment. Any thoughts?

Did you have the limiter on? Is so, the noise is always high and doesn't have a jump. Turn off the limiter and see if yuo can hear the jump in noise :)

I think, it does not make sens to compare the XLR preamps on the H5 with the mini jack preamps on the H1n. But I quickly made a few tests with with the mini jack input on the H5. It seems that the H5s mini jack input has at least 6dB less noise than the H1n.

I find this very confusing. My gain is the exact opposite to yours. So much noise at 10 and none at 0. In fact I mentioned your video while speaking to a service rep at Zoom today (I was having USB issues ... you need a USB 2.0 cord) and the rep seemed mystified by your findings as well.

Hey, your gain is working how it is supposed to work. Overall the noise floor gets higher at higher gain settings. You can see this at 2:00 in the video. This graph shows exactly that. But I´m, talking about the signal to noise ratio (SNR). That´s how high the noise is in comparison to your signal. The SNR is lower at settings below 5.5 than at gain settings above that. That´s what´s shown in the graph at 2:15.

Must be a defect. Mine works as expected. Lowest to highest just makes the mic really loud. At 10 you couldn't move a finger. I think more fuzz on upper levels.

Hey, I'm pretty sure it is not a defect, I tested it on multiple H1ns. Of course turning up the gain amplifies the sound from the mics. But between 5 and 6 the noise floor jumps. Have you tried the test at 2:30. You have to be in a very quiet environment to be able to clearly listen to the noise floor of your H1n.

Hey, with beat audio editing software do you mean a DAW? You could try Garageband, Cubase LE, Ableton Live 9 Lite or Audacity. They are all free.
