    Julian, thank you for posting this information from which I have sustantially benefited. I did the recording according to your setting and it works like charm. I have a good question for you. I find the recording from A7 camera using H5 xy mic is sinificantly better than the recording from H5 recorder alone (w/ xy-mic). The notes were cleaner and have better definition. I thought the recording device inside H5 should do the better job. Do you notice that? If so, what could be reason?

    Julian, help me with two problems with my H5: 1. I’m using a Shure m58 with standard cable to input 1/2 and Audio-Technica headphones connected to the phone-jack (upper lefthand side of the H5). I have to set the input-volume dials for 1/2 to nearly 7 just to hear myself through the headphones and I hear an annoying “hiss”. Why can’t the unit be more sensitive and I be able to hear from 1-6???? I thought for sure that it would be a beautiful sound that I could hear, crisp and without hiss and at a lower input-volume setting (1-6)? Am I connecting incorrectly? Please help me!

    hey Julian, I want a similar setup with xy stereo summed with a shotgun Mic through the zoom down to the camera input. This avoids the need to post sync video and audio, but I want to know if I can blend the 2 types of mics sounds for more focus on the subject ( shotgun) and room sound (xy). Will this work?

  • @juliankrause2105

    @juliankrause2105

    7 жыл бұрын

    I hope I understand you correctly. You want to record with the XY capsule and simultaneously with a shotgun mic. You want to mix both signals in the H5 and go directly into camera. If so, this is definitely possible. Your Zoom H5 must be in the Recording mode "Multi File" Arm Chanel L and R and the one where your XLR Mic is connected. The Zoom H5 will mix the XY capsule and the shotgun mic and output it via Line-Out to your camera. But be aware! The XY capsule and shotgun mic will be summed together and there is no way you could unmix them in post. That’s why I would suggest recording the sound on the H5 as well. This way you get the XY capsule and shotgun tracks recorded separately. In post you would have much more flexibility to mix the two tracks together.

    Sure, you can. Having a matched pair in my opinion is awesome to record a group of musicians because you can use the mics in a stereo setup. Done right, you get beautiful open stereo sound. I would suggest positioning the mics in an ORTF setup. ORTF describes how the mic are positioned to each other. You can find more information about ORTF here: www.dpamicrophones.com/mic-university/principles-of-the-ortf-stereo-technique Then I would put this stereo setup in front of the quartet. You can vary the distance to the musicians to get more or less ambient sound in your recording. Too far away, you will hear too much room reverberance. Too close and the recording sounds very dry. Maybe start with 1m-2m distance to the quartet and adjust from there.

    @@juliankrause2105 Glad I'm reading the comments, some excellent information in here. I record a lot of live concerts that are amplified through loudspeakers with my H5, I found for the most part the closer to the speakers the more to my liking, drier yes but there's already so much reverb in the mixes oftentimes this works. Seems a setup though with 2 matched mics, poles, etc can easily cost into the 1000's of dollars but I'd imagine it delivers superior sound to just using an H5 with the XY capsule.

But here is a general rule of setting gian for you: When you record dialogue, I you should turn the gain knob on the H5 to a position, where the audio meters on the screen are hitting about -12db. For ambience recording I would go a bit lower, peaking at around -18db. Thanks for the sub!

    My GH5 goes down to -12db on the mic input side. Will your setup here work in a similar way? I did email Zoom about the H6 line out, their support seemed to think I would need an attenuator un-between. I'm quite conflicted between the MixPre3 and the H5 or H6. I suspect battery life on the H5/H6 is better than the MixPre3. Form factor and plug-on mics means more versatility with the H5/H6, handheld or on top camera. But better preamps in the MixPre make for cleaner recordings.

  • @juliankrause2105

    @juliankrause2105

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hey, I do not think that you need an attenuator cable because you can setup the needed attenuation in the menu of the H5/H6. Here are the steps to setup your equipment: 1. set "mic level adj." on your gh5 to -12dB 2. connect H6 "line out" with gh5 using a stereo jack cable 3. connect a mic to the H6 4. produce a constant tone into the mic (for example play a tone like a sine wave on your smartphone into the mic) 5. turn the gain knob on the H6 so that the audio meter hit -12dB 6. adjust the "line level out" on the H6 that on the gh5 the meter also hit -12dB or slightly below Calibrating the audio level is a bit more simple with the mixPre-3 because it has a built in tone generator but in the end the steps above will accomplish the exact same thing. BTW: Don´t be fooled, the preamps only really make a diffrence when you use dynamic microphones. If you use condenser mics, the noise diffrence between the H6 and the MixPre-3 will be negligible! I personally have no experience with the H6, but the batteries of my H5 last much longer than the MixPre-3. That´s why i prefer the H5 for simple run and gun shooting.

The only solution I can think of is upgrading your H4n to the H4n PRO or any other recorder with better preamps. Aside from that the method of connecting the H4n to the A7s works pretty much the same. Cheers!

    It seems to me that you have to go through a lot of trouble and the end result is you still are recording through inferior preamps of the camera. Isn't it just better to sync in post where your audio is never touched by the camera and it's electronics/limiters etc.? I realize it's an extra step but it's also an extra step to do all this work you are describing the bottom line is the best sound will be had from the recorder alone? Do you agree or is there something I'm missing?

    Hey Jimmy, you are absolutely right. Recording on the Zoom H5 you get the highest audio quality with this setup. But recording the sound straight into the A7s you do not have to sync the sound in post. And to be honest, recording on the H5 vs H5 into the A7s the sound isn´t that different. In the end you have to decide, if you want the convenience of already synced audio with recording on the A7s or if you want the slightly better audio quality and sync the sound in post.

    The H5 has a quarter inch thread at the bottom. You could connect it to a camera with something like this: www.amazon.com/dp/B018UJLIOE/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B018UJLIOE&pd_rd_w=JLh3h&pf_rd_p=f0dedbe2-13c8-4136-a746-4398ed93cf0f&pd_rd_wg=5BRBf&pf_rd_r=S3CNQ20XRBYHSYKV4BYM&pd_rd_r=e4b7563a-0500-11e9-a176-db5c0092f3eb Or something a little more sophisticated: mymic.rycote.com/products/windshield-solutions/portable-recorder-solutions/zoom-h5-audio-kit/

    @@juliankrause2105 Just wanted to chime in here if it's not too late for the person asking. I actually own the simple option and with a Sony A7Riii and also my Canon 80D that setup induces TONS of noise from the camera, I'm not sure why but as soon as I remove the H5 and attached hot shoe adapter from my camera the noise drastically reduces, oddly the internal mics on the Sony don't pickup those same noises. I don't know if the "little more sophisticated" option works better but I can assure the first one is terrible. Also if you like to use the EVF putting the H5 atop your camera makes that impossible.

    Am I correct in understanding that you don’t need a regulated cable to connect the two together? Thanks.

    Yes, that is absolutely correct. The attenuation is set in the menu of the H5, so no special cable is needed. Cheers!

    Why wouldn't you just use the mic on the zoom ?
