For years, I owned the Zoom H4N and it is a good portable recorder. It works best with batteries than with an AC Adaptor because of the ground noise. I have used it with my mirrorless camera, guitars, blue bluebird mic, SM57 mic and the vintage Uydine 545 mic. It could serve as an interface with my Garageband DAW system. I could choose or make my own special effects on the recorder. I could save and name my special effects. It could power a phantom power mic at 24V and 48V. With the software update, I can control the recording level separately on the two XLR inputs. I could plug in my electric guitar into the recorder. I have recorded sounds off my computer by using a stereo phone jack cable into the stereo external mic input and it worked at a high definition level of 96Khz, 24bit. The H5 and the H6 is tempting to purchase with its extra mics and extra xlr mic inputs.

Looking forward to having an H5 as well.I look at it this way.......I would rather spend the extra money on the advice of a pro who's been there, and increase my odds of success, as opposed to making amateur mistakes which I would later regret. Thank you for producing these video's.

Hi Mike, You have some real golden nuggets of information in getting started in VO. I eventually settled with Zoom H6 as it already has 4 XLR inputs and is good for location & podcast recording in a conversational setting. Although can't afford a whisper room, and closet space not suitable for consistency, I do have a spare room so looking into providing better acoustic treatment using your method. In the UK we don't appear to have the corning 703 and from my investigation Rockwool RW3 seems to be the nearest equivalent so going to go with that me thinks. I'm subscribed so make sure you keep up the great vids that helps all of us newbies. Keep the noise floor low, the plosives gone and the voice bright ! :0)

A USB 5 volt AC charger like the one that charges your phone will work just take out the iPhone cable from the plug and connect a USB to the plug and the smaller USB 2.0 end into your device another option is to get a 'memory bank storage' make sure its fully charged and connect that up via USB out on the data bank to USB 2.0 (smaller end) into Zoom H6) I haven't tried this on any other Zooms so don't know if it works on other models. Hope you got it sorted and making great sounds.

Hello Mike! I bought a Zoom H5, but I have a problem everyone seems to share. When you listen into the headphones, H5 makes an electronic noise, like an interference, like a cheap device that makes noises when runs out of batteries, that it is not present on the recording itself. It is strange, because it is pretty annoying sometimes.I use the gain level on 5, like you do, because after 5, the preamp noise becomes pretty loud and not usable at all.Do you have the same problem, with the electronic noise? Thank you!

  • @matrixate
    @matrixate3 жыл бұрын

The only problem with this, is like you said, it picks up desk and handling noises really well which require you to use RX to fix them. Besides that, USB power is the main reason to get it for outdoor shooting and the other reasons you describe. Definitely a winner.

Hey, Mike. Without getting into all the reasoning and all that, I am going to add an SM57 to use with my H5 that was bought largely bc of your endorsement (which also is how I found your channel several months ago). Your advice has served me well thus far with the H5 and some tips/tricks - thank you - so I was hoping you could weigh in on whether or not I need an external preamp for the 57 and, if I do, if you could recommend something portable and budget-friendly that wouldn't end up on the upgrade ASAP list. Would love to grab the MM-1 you reviewed recently, but that's definitely out of my range right now. I'll drop the cash on a Cloudlifter or something similar if that's what I need to do, but I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible. I'm not presently doing VO or such work, so I don't necessarily need quite that standard of audio, but I still want a quality baseline recording.

Kamahari, the headphone amp is noisy, but that may not be indicative of the audio recorded if the gain structure of your input strip is set up. Something this low powered would also require a pretty good signal going in, it would be unreasonable to expect over 10db of clean on the combi jacks, instrumental or dynamic or condenser. I still have to mess with this, but I had a much vaunted Sony PCM-50, and the on-board mics of this blow the expensive Sony ones completely out of the water. Dead quiet, and smooth high end. I will be AB testing with a pair of RØDE nt5s today to confirm whether or not the externals are as noisy as you say.

When using the Zoom H5, do you use a different mic than if you were at home with your normal DAC? I have a pretty powerful mic amplifier connected to a Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser mic, that in turn runs into my soundcard. Would think that the Zoom H5 will suit a lighter driven mic? Perhaps a shotgun mic of some type? I haven no clue as I have never tried this out. I'm planning to buy the H6 actually for on location interviews, but i haven't thought of it as an audio interface for portable VO work.

If I can, I travel with my Sennheiser 416 mic -- which is a shotgun. It's reasonably durable, and doesn't require a ton of gain.

Mike, do you still feel the same about the H5? I bought a tascam dr40, similar to the h5. I like everything about it, except the noise floor is about 4 dB higher than my computer daw. How is the h5 noise floor? I will still use the tascam for field recording and use noise reduction in post if needed

The Zoom H4N Pro, H5 and H6 have a noise floor of -120dB EIN A-weighted. The DR40 is -107dB, so 13dB more noise, is a huge difference. www.wildtronics.com/recorderguide.html#.X2TaHzjsZZU

can you record to the H5's SD card and the computer at the same time so you have a back up recording just in case the computer crashes.

I went with an Audient iD14 as an interface mostly because the mic preamps are supposed to be excellent and quiet, but I'm still within in the return window and you're really selling me on the Zoom H5. Do you really find the preamps to be good quality/low self-noise? Thank you so much - you are making some amazing videos here.

I have an Audient id22 and the H5. For a permament home setup I'd stick with the Audient, I think the preamps are quieter overall, but if portability is part of your requirements, you cannot go wrong with the h5

Very nice video !! How is the preamp section? I try to improve my Hybrid microphone which is connected via USB ti the macbook and I hear more hiss than i'd like... do you think this H5 would reduce the hiss via the XLR connection of my mic as it is hybrid (usb & XLR)? Thanks again.

If you do use a PC, a VGA, HDMI, or related extension cord is great along with a good wireless keyboard and mouse. Move the noise out the the room. Monitors are fanless.

Love it! Booth Junkie to the rescue. Does it mow the lawn? I've been wondering why more VO artists don't use this as an interface. Just saw a video on another channel where the guy just happened to mention in passing that this could be used as an interface as well. I had a "what, What, WHAT?!!??" moment. You can pick them up on eBay for $200. Very, very nice. Sorry, Focusrite. That's one less Scarlet Duo sale for you.

Hi Mike, many thanks for your videos on the Zoom H5 and many other devices/mics - they’ve been incredibly informative. I have a question and I wonder if you could help me: I’ve recently purchased a Zoom H5 hoping it would be some sort of jack of all trades for my needs - I’m a language teacher but also a hobbyist musician. The idea was to use the Zoom H5 and its XY mic when teaching online but also when recording a tutorial video in the style of a vlog. However, in my experience there’s so much white noise when the gain is set anywhere above 5 that it makes zero latency monitoring really unpleasant and the white noise is also present in the recording afterwards. Could you comment on that? Is this normal for this device? or perhaps an issue with my particular device? In addition, the same problem occurs when when plugging in an XLR mic for a podcast style recording - i’ve tried it using the Samson Q2U, Rode NT1 and also Shure Sm7b (with a fethead). Thanks!

Did you get a reply to this? I have the same issue with noise coming in at 5 or more gain that it is impossible. It is self-noise. I am using a shure SM7B in a well sound-proofed booth, so it is nothing external. Any advice, please?
