Can You Use an H5 As A Main Mic?

Ғылым және технология

Well it does it all already, why not find out whether or not it actually works as an all in one studio?
Now of course I have mentioned several times that every studio should have one of these...

Yep, 3yrs on and still amazing. I have the H6, but essentially the same thing. I have the F3 also, but have to say, the design of the H6/H5 is genius.

I used this to record a good few podcasts while waiting for a replacement condenser mic, and I continue to use it for video calls when I'm too lazy to set my mics up. I have to agree. It's quite usable as a main mic!

Love this. I've done this with the H1n when my interface had to go out for repair and it worked great. You just need about all the pop filters you can get your hands on, if you're like me. (I do long video workshops and my good mic technique tends to go out of the window when I get excited about something). Glad I discovered this channel 🙏

On another video, someone suggested to speak into one of the mics straight on, so the unit would be turned. You'd import the files as Left and Right - 2 channels - than remove the one that wasn't facing your mouth. This gives the best audio on these zooms. So you're using either the x or the y and discarding the other one because it will be horrible. Anyone tried this?

This absolutely is the way it should be used for recording narration when no stereo is needed. This will ensure that someone will get the best audio, these mics can provide. If you use it like in the video, you actually use both mics off-axis, which results in less than ideal frequency response.

Thanks for sharing... It was highly EQ(ed), and noise reduced; wasn't it? Zoom Recorders have pretty noisy sounds by default. I have H5n und also H1n for a long time now.

It seems that many units are hit or miss regarding the quality of sound... my H5 unit is terribly noisy (tried all gain levels from 1 to 10 about 3 inches from my mouth). I upgraded the capsule to the XYH-6 and got a slightly better noise floor and better quality sound, but it is still noisier than what you have with the XYH-5. I might try a dedicated microphone, but I just hope that the H5 will not ruin the sound of that too.

I got one... fantastic little unit. As a studio Sound Engineer for over 30 years, I have used plenty of mics and equipment. This little unit is powerful for its size. A 4 channel portable recording studio.

sir I have been using this mic, I am a musician... wouldn't a mono mic be better to record vocals than this one's stereo recorder?

Great video, yes we can be friends! I am between a rock and a hard place, I need a portable recording setup for bicycle touring with my Sitar. I looked at the H6 as an all in one solution for recording while in the tent. Battery powered, all the other bells and whistles. But the problem is where the screen is in relation to the playing position. So I am looking at using the 1010music Bluebox as a micro-studio-DAW in conjunction with some kind of battery powered mic. It seems really hard to find a battery powered mic with a built in preamp and phantom power that doesn't require an endless chain of dongles to make it work for the Bluebox. The question I have is; what is the AD/DA path between the H5 mic and the line/headphone output? Does the H5 convert the signal from analog to digital before the line/headphone out? It would be great to use the H5 as a field/sample recorder and as a mic plugged into the Bluebox for my Sitar. I'd like the gadget path to be as simple as possible, like; Instrument-mic-cable-Bluebox-headphones powered with a USB powerbank. Cheers!!! David

I used to think the same.....tried zoom H4n pro sterio xy capsules. Looks good in theory... But practically speaking it was a mess... Still have it... I use it with Beringer xm8500.. i made my 5-6 friends listen both audio... They couldn't even tell the difference.

Dude! Send your audio from this line out port to the camera mic port and select that port to accept line level audio like I do on my Fuji X-S10. Most other brands don't have line level audio in the menu so you're stuck with the camera mic preamp.

Careful with this. The threads in the H5 are not capped off they are open. If you screw it on too tightly you'll punch the circuit board and ruin your unit. Ask me how I know. And it doesn't take too much. Just getting it barely snug will do it.

What it does is severs the connection to the XLR inputs. The XY mics will still record. But the XLR inputs go to hell.

@@DarkCornerStudios so I forget where I read about the issue, but after my XLRs stopped working, I found this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKWs0MdshZy7Y5s.html and I was able to fix my unit mostly. Both XLR channels have noise now, though. X and Y mics are fine. I mainly use the H5 as a back ambient sound recorder, because I now use the Zoom Podtrak 4 if I'm on the go, or the Rodecaster Pro if in the studio. Your Podtrak video is what convinced me to pull the trigger. Great content.
