Best Travel & Vlog Mics? | Zoom H1/H1n vs Sony ICD-UX560 | + Rode VideoMicro

Фильм және анимация

I recently switched from the Zoom H1 and Rode VideoMic Pro to the Sony ICD-UX560 Recorder and budget Rode VideoMicro, plus the Aputure A.Lav EZ Lapel Mic.
In this video I review these affordable and portable microphones, explain why I'm switching my travel vlog setup and give a full comparison of the recorders - including clean audio samples.
If you want to hear what the Rode VideoMicro sounds like my recent vlog from Budapest was filmed entirely using it:

    Use a battery bank connected to the Zoom via the USB input instead of using AA batteries. You can get relatively small 10,000 mah battery banks. You could attach it to your holster via Velcro tape.

    great review. i appreciate that the relative pros and cons of each unit were clearly pointed out. the ability to use a USB-charging battery is a great feature. i read some other reviews which didn't really detail the feature set all that well nor compare sound files as clearly. i own the H1 and it does record fantastic audio for the price, but the unit is super-sensitive.

    Great video Jamie! I film fly fishing videos and I'm using this as a stand alone device to capture my audio and then I sync it with my video in post production. Ideally, I would like to capture all the stream noise and surrounding ambient sounds but I need to cut wind noise. I use a Rode lav mic with a dead cat wind cover on the mike. Given that, what setting do you think would be best for me to try? Thanks again for your great review!

    GOOD! The advice is right on! Ultimately it's about useability/reliability and 80% quality is remarkably good. I cycled through several "pro" models before cycling back to an improved version of my high-end consumer Olympus that I had relied on without fail for 5 years, since the advent of USB digital MP3 recorders. Shooting an interview with a talent holding the recorder (I am behind the camera) these things are remarkably good for the money. I found the built-in mics on my 570 to be as good as plug-in stereo mic I had been using to boost my former Olympus. However it makes excellent sense to own two or even three (or more) for multiple person / crowd / ambient / music etc. They will run about two hours on a fresh charge. I personally use the highest compressed setting - I may regret that, and may switch to the PCM 16 bit because it's becoming less significant with a 32Gig card - but it's still 5X or so high quality MP3. The one thing I miss is a decent case - I am using a retro leather cell phone case from about turn of the century. Periodically I check-in to see if there's an upgrade close to its price and with improved utility. Like the same model that can be read in bright light, or with a larger screen and text! This gets confusing because there are a lot of really old units still on Amazon - but nothing yet fits the upgrade path except maybe the M10 at 3X price. What about you?

    Nice video, you have touched upon all critical aspects. Zoom has versatility with the tripod thread that Sony misses. A key factor that has been missed is Zoom's ability to be used as USB Mic for a PC/Mac.

    This is a wonderful review and comparison (and I do technical reviews all the time). I only wish the ICD-UX560 could record 48 kHz, which is a must for certain applications. WAIT, now I see that it works with 48 kHz using the AAC codec, but is that for recording or only for playback from an imported file?

  • @jamieroundtheworld

    @jamieroundtheworld

    In non-technical terms, some mic jacks have three black rings on them, and some have two. Mobile phones take 3 black rings, which is what my version of the aperture lapel mic has (so my mic works directly with phones) whereas most cameras and recording devices take the 2 black ring version. Whilst they are the same shape and both fit in each other’s ports, they are not compatible and need an adaptor.

    I have an H1 but disappointingly the early versions have a massive bug where it drains the battery WHILE OFF. This makes it so every time I'm done using the H1 I have to remove the battery otherwise it'll kill them. I'm in a country where Zoom doesn't provide support so I still have that issue. And the tripod hole on my H1 has already cracked cause its just plastic. It also uses the extremely horrible horror-story-come-to-life USB Mini B port. And now I'm considering the Sony recorder cause it's really thin so I can bring it in a pocket and has built-in storage, full size USB connector, and built-in battery.

    the Zoom will be better for recording music. it can record in 24-bit/96khz and has more full-featured gain settings. also it has a tripod socket so you can stand it on a table or the floor. the newer h1n adds more features like a rotary dial and more dedicated buttons so you dont have to go into menus. The Sony is marketed as a dictaphone which happens to have stereo mics, while Zoom was thinking more about musical applications.

    J G I edit in Final Cut Pro X and it has a great sync feature which automatically uses the audio from all your clips to sync as many video and audio files as you need. Great for multi-cam shoots etc. If not then the good old fashion way to manually sync is to get your talent to do a sync clap at the beginning of the recording, and just line up the loud sound wave on both recordings 👍

    Closest in Tascam's range is probably the DR-05X, it's a little more expensive and chunkier than the H1n: amzn.to/2Im6Woy Sony doesn't really have anything similar in that price range. I think the only 24-bit recorder they do is the A10 Linear PCM Recorder but that's significantly more: amzn.to/31E2ZmD

    Jamie Brown, great video! I just got an Aputure A Lav EZ mic and puzzled over which audio recorder to get to start dabbling in making videos. I like the size of the Sony for sure but I am have found gently used H1n's which I know are more versatile as a USB mic, Dual Audio, and on the body. Plus, I wouldn't mind having as I already have rechargeables. This sound is quite similar too.

    I agree that content matters more. In the end you could also use your phone or an old backup phone to record audio with a lav mic. But the Zoom sounds quite better. The battery issue could have solved by buying 4 or 8 lithium AAA batteries that can be recharged directly with a usb cable without a dedicated battery charger. Also the Zoom can be powered by a power bank. Although the Sony recorder is smaller.

    Awesome video, the million dollar question, how on earth do you sync your Sony 44.1khz audio with your camera video 48khz audio with out stretching your Sony audio. It's impossible to re sample the 44.1khz audio to 48khz perfectly without drift. Please let us know how you're work flow is made up of.

    Hi so just tried it out with an AUX cable and my camera and the answer is yes 👍 The Sony ICD-UX560 had to be recording to pass through the audio but it did output it to the camera, and the camera could record it live. This worked both standalone and with the lapel mic plugged into the Sony Recorder. The output was quite crackly and noisy in places but I believe this was because of the crappy AUX cable I was using (it didn't like it whenever I moved it) so if you want to do this, ensure you get a good quality cable! ☺️

    Each file can only be a maximum of 2gb in size. But the H1 will automatically start writing to a new file when the limit is reached. You can stitch the files together without any gaps.

  • @jamieroundtheworld

    No unfortunately I haven't, but after briefly looking at the specs there are a few improvements to the 560 - particularly around noise isolation. However I wouldn't say the improvements look that great to spend loads extra on, so if you can pick up the 560 still for a good price then it might be worth just sticking with that.

    Yeah I agree the Zoom definitely sounds fuller when compared side by side - but I guess my point was that if you were just using the Sony on it's own, no one would even notice, especially for something like a KZread video. For instance all the Voice Overs for my videos now, like this one below about Riga, was done with the Sony and it works perfectly well because people are more interested in the content than closely analysing the quality of the audio. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l22Vy7B7YpXemLg.html

    With a lapel mic plugged in? You are probably looking at similar quality to the Sony recorder depending on how good the recording app is you use. However it may be noisier as the Sony has quite good filters for focusing on vocals and canceling out background noise.

    Hey, I personally use the Nikon D7500 with mostly the Nikon 16-80mm lens. This isn't the most portable, and not really the best for video actually - I just love the picture quality and enjoy using it. It's hard for me to recommend anything specifically without knowing your budget or circumstances but here's a few general suggestions: At the top end you will obviously want to go with one of the new full-frame mirrorless which match quality with portability. The Sony's and Nikons seem to be the best to me. In the mid-range I really love the look of Fujifilms X-T3 and the newly released and lighter X-T30. I'm tempted to buy one of these myself as they have fantastic specs. Lower midrange to budget you want to look at the mirrorless offerings from Sony like the A6000's series or Canon's M50 which is popular with bloggers. I don't really know enough about the budget 'point-and-shoot' end of cameras but I do like the look of the Olympus Tough TG-5 - it doesn't have the best quality but it is waterproof and super rugged so is great for adventure and travel. Hope that helps a bit?

  • @jonasv328

    Sorry, I do not get it. You can buy some Panasonic Eneloop AA rechargeable batteries with a small USB charger. This would give way more battery life and independency than an integrated Li-Ion battery. Also you are glad that Sony has some environmental friendly marketing stuff on their website, although you buy a product which has a predetermined limited short lifetime due to the integrated non-user-changeable battery. In three years, you will have to throw it away due to the battery getting to its end of life. A Zoom H1 can still work in 10 years, also Eneloops have a much higher number of cycles compared to Li-Ion. Yes, the Sony is smaller, but that is really the only advantage.

  • @jamieroundtheworld

    @jamieroundtheworld

    Great points, thanks for the comment! For me personally at the moment and a lot of the stuff I'm making, size and ease of use are some of the most important things, and the same for a lot of people that want a simple way to improve their audio. The Sony was the best way I could find to do that for me - as I say I have tried different options of rechargeable AA's and it always meant bringing extra things like another charger etc. Plus the menu system really does make it as easy as switching on and hitting record. But I agree that's not for everyone which is why I included all the information and comparisons so people can make up their own mind. You make a good point about the lifespan of integrated Li-Ion batteries and that was something I weighed up, but to be honest my Zoom is falling apart and taped up anyway so even that hasn't had the lifespan I would hope. Obviously if Sony (and other electronics companies) were series about their environmental commitments I would love to see them start to introduce products that you can replace and repair the batteries in them more easily - however unfortunately I'm not holding out much hope. In the meantime I have a pretty good electronics recycling scheme in my area for when things do reach the end of their usable life.

    I agree to this. A perfectly working device will not be usable if the internal battery died specially with smaller devices. This is the same reason I still have some laptop and phone with a replacable battery.

  • @barret8

    in theory - yes. however, as a zoom h1n user I can assure you it's a pain. first of all, your rechargeable batteries are not 1.5v but 1.2v and even though you can specify in the settings that you are using Ni-Mh batteries, it still often shows good batteries as almost flat. Also, changing batteries is an inconvenience too. You can of course power zoom h1n externally, but that's even more cumbersome. So, as happy I am with my zoom h1n, I'm looking to 'downgrade' to smaller/more convenient Sony, be it ux560 or ux570.
