@TheDoc1019 No problem at all. An advanced Auto Gain Control (AGC) and lo-cut filter allow the H2n to record audio at the most appropriate level while minimizing unwanted noise without having to adjust settings. If desired, you can also adjust the gain levels manually with the mic gain wheel. The built-in compressor/limiter puts a cap on maximum audio levels to ensure that your recordings remain distortion-free.

@iPrank App I recommend choosing the mid-side mode which allows adjustment of the width of the stereo field for terrific flexibility, setting the perfect amount of ambient/surrounding noise. Mid-side recording combines a uni-directional mid mic that captures sound directly in front of you and a bi-directional side mic that captures sound from your left and right. By adjusting the level of the side mic, the width of the stereo field is controlled.

You're the best ! I really needed to be sure it has a speaker. I'm always outdoors, so recording myself without being able to hear what I record before going home, that would be a torture.

@trojancelis Your best choice would be to record in the mid-side mode which allows you to adjust the width of your stereo field for terrific flexibility. When recording in RAW mode, you can even adjust the field after you've made a recording.

@jonock1 You do not have to turn or rotate the recorder to engage or perceive the benefit of the various mic recording modes. The H2n?s onboard 90° X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization and no phase shifting. The result is brilliant stereo recording with natural depth and accurate imaging.

@gorrosound The differential in price is well justified for the Zoom H2 as it offers 4 microphones and additional recording features that are beneficial. The H1 does have a very convenient, slim form factor that you may prefer however.

Thank for a swift and detailed response! I'm a student, and as such have a limited budget. Now I know that at $150 H2n isn't exactly cheap, but I'm willing to spend that amount if it'll secure good lecture recordings. Forking out over $230 for a shotgun mic is a bit too much I'm afraid. I should also mention that I need something compact, which is why I went for a dictaphone-type recorder rather than a shotgun mic. If you can recommend a cheaper, but good, dictaphone, I'd be very interested :)

The unit is designed to have the operator face the screen and the sound source on the other side for stereo and mid-side recording; which is how you'd probably want to use it to record a band in a field recording. If you're doing surround recordings, then it records sound from 360 degrees around the unit.

I just ordered this impressive little device and I've got a question regarding which mic settings I should use. I'll be using it to record college lectures, so I'm mostly interested in getting sound from the front. The auditorium I'm sitting in houses 400 students, so there's going to be a fair bit of background noise. What would be the best settings for a front-only recording with high background noise? (XY or MS with a cutoff for the background noise?)

@riKringkast Traditional XY (stereo) recording mimics human hearing. The MS technique gives you more control over the width of the stereo spread than other microphone recording techniques, and allows you to make adjustments at any time after the recording is finished. A mono shotgun mic with a tight directional pick-up pattern is the best solution. Consider the Audio-Technica AT8035 (B&H# UAT8035). Questions? E-mail us: AskBH@BandH.com

@standrick the compressor completely sucks. i just got my h2n. the mic, or probably rather the built in amps create noise, which is a problem with any mic, actually. got the same with a studio mic of comparable quality/price. but the compressor presets all increase this noise drastically, which makes most recordings useless unless you intentionally want that noise. but i think it's good to keep the recording as raw as possible anyway. ;) hope that helps!
