You're welcome! I truly enjoy it too! It's soooo convenient and like you said, the playback is great! Better than the smartphone alone.
Zoom H1n. Best $100 I've ever spent.Recorded many bands and was blown away by its acoustical spectrum. Good stuff.

I was watching the video to see what the H1n was like as a backup audio recorder for voice and I like your comparison between the computer's built in mic and the H1n itself, thanks. When you did the demo with your trumpet, I was stunned though. You're quite amazing.
Thanks sooo much,you broke it down in to simple words,this is far the best video out there for the zoom h1n!!!!!!keep up the good work my dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for the review, I especially appreciate the time stamps in the description. I wish every reviewer was like you! Side question: I use a Ditto Looper pedal. Would I be able to plug in this mic from the Zoom’s 1/8 inch output to a 1/4 inch instrument cable adapter to record to the looper? Many thanks

Yes, you can use the Zoom to pass audio. This is how I’ve recorded some of my videos for the channel.
Thanks for a real life review...

Hi Chris! Really enjoyed your review! I have had a Zoom H1n for sometime, but until recently didn't use it much. I'm a comeback trumpet player and really enjoyed your recent Learn Jazz Standards Trumpet class. I'm now recording my practices, etudes, etc. to help improve my playing. I am using the H1n connected directly to a MacBook using GarageBand. I'm curious if you have any specific guidance on how to set the H1n for best results in this configuration? Turn off the auto level? Turn off the limiter, turn off the filter? etc. I'm currently manually setting the gain to about 4 and playing 2-3 feet away. Based on your review, I intend to experiment with the distance to see how it effects the recording quality....Thanks for your great teaching!

Hi Lance! Thanks for reaching out and for leaving a comment! I appreciate it. It sounds like you are on the right track with the H1N. I believe that the sound is best when the Auto-Gain is NOT used. The digital limiter is decent for the price point but I also believe that the sound is BEST when the gain is set properly for the trumpet. So, if the signal is on the softer side that is fine as long as the sound is actually being recorded. This is because you can always turn up in your DAW later if needed. Does this make sense? Hope this is helpful.
Thanks, Chris!

Chris, great video, very educational. First time listener here, and I have a question: how is the audio from the Zoom compared to if I just record whatever I play straight into my DAW(Ableton). I am looking into Audio Recorders so I can avoid pressing all record buttons in my tracks in Ableton. Thank you.
@ChrisDavisTrumpet

The Zoom recorder is pretty clean. You can use it to record into Ableton if you’d like. How does the sound compare? I guess it would depend on what other microphone you’d be comparing it to and what interface you’re using. But, if you’re in a good sounding room then it will record well for you.
GREAT info and great video. Thanks! I know this is shallow, but I love everything about this recorder except that it's goofy looking. : )
You seem a cool guy, nice video. I love and use the Zoom H1n each week and can defo agree, its a great recorder. :) Nice work. :)

@@ChrisDavisTrumpet Your welcome and liked it. I mainly listen to music On my phone or/and computer 😊👍🏻🎙
Hi, and qhat you need to plug into an Android cellphone??? Thnks
I've been wanting something small, easy to use and decent sounding to record when I sing and play uke, harmonica and my other random small instruments that clutter up my home. So I can just press record, sing and play my stuff and then plug it into my computer and pull out mp3s or wav from this thing, that's great, I think this is just what I want.
Great video Chris! Two questions, can you connect an external mic to it? Also, do you use the mics on the Zoom to record trumpet or do you connect an external mic? Thanks!
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
2 жыл бұрын
Technically, yes, you can connect an external mic. I use a lav with it and yes I also use the built-in microphone. However if you would like to use a dynamic mic then I’d recommend the Zoom H5 or H6 or H8. They all have XLR inputs.

There you go! This is a great choice for you then.
How do you connect this to a computer to use as an interface?
Thanks for the review Chris! Quick question, what's the quality of portable speaker like on it? When I'm practicing and I want to instantly record and listen back on small phrases, I'd love to not have to hook up to a speaker and just use it independently. Secondly a year on, is this still the best portable recorder to the best of your knowledge. Thanks Again
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
Жыл бұрын
There is a portable speaker built in but I don’t use it. Not enough detail. I guess the speaker is too small for that. I always use head phones for playback. Is this still a good go to? To the best of my knowledge it is for records in this price bracket.
My sister is good at music and she has been told by great men she has to pick this career up but we are just looking for how she can start. Want her to have a recorder to start recording.
Great review Chris! What DAW do you for post editing?

Hi Thanks for the video as I'm looking to buy one of these but caught between this and Tascam DR-05X, would you recommend this over that?
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I enjoy the sound of Zoom over Tascam in general. But I think the Dr05 has different features than the H1n. If you’re considering the dr05 then consider the Zoom H5 or anything in the H series that receives XLR. Let me know what you choose!
@ChrisT-fr2qt

@@ChrisDavisTrumpet Thanks for the reply Chris I ended up buying the Tascam DR-05X as it's mainly for recording acoustic guitar music and singing. I haven't used it yet but going to soon.
Hi Chris. I received an H1N as a gift...I actually asked for it. I want to record piano and voice together. Playback on the H1N itself is very thin...no low end, even through headphones. How do I hear playback that sounds like the real time and recorded music you provided as examples?
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you need to get the microphone closer to the source when recording. Just be sure not to clip the audio.
what do you think of the playback speaker ? is is loud enough to play back the recorder music?
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
3 жыл бұрын
I don’t really use it because it is too small to hear any detail. I always use headphones.
I need to record my practice and listen to my solo and chord comping... would you recommend this for a jazz guitar player?
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
2 жыл бұрын
Certainly!!! I didn’t demonstrate in the video but this is an excellent practice aide.
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
2 жыл бұрын
You can over-dub as well. Plus you can set loops for practice.
I use the Zoom H1N when I mix down to stereo from a multitrack recorder. I set the Zoom at 24 bit 48k and get a nice clean signal. However, it’s important to point out that a typical line level signal from a mixer is often too hot for the H1n. Even if your signal is set to peak at -12db, it’s still prone to unpleasant clipping artifacts. And since at this price point there’s no built-in pad/attenuator, I had to buy a short attenuator cable that lowers the mixer signal by around 30 db. Once I did that, mixing down to the Zoom h1n sounds quite good.

The Zoom H1n does not record video but you can attach it to a video camera (including your smartphone). Also consider the Zoom Q2n. I don't believe the quality of the video is the best however the sound is great. If you want the best in video and audio then I would recommend buying a dedicated video recorder and a dedicated audio recorder and connecting the two.
