Woodturning: Snowfall on Mountain Ash
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This ash log was cut down in a suburb of Washington DC. I have turned it into a shallow bowl, decorated with a picture of a mountain ash branch with its rowan berries still on. I used sanding sealer, wood dye, acrylic paint, water-based spray varnish, and oil-based wiping varnish to finish it.

Really beautiful bowl, Rick, even though it almost kicked your ash. But then you had your ash covered with all the jokes. I read some where that when doing blue, you should do a layer of black first. I think it was referring to alcohol based dyes though. Not sure if the dye type would make a difference. Not sure it would be a good idea to try it on a project like this one. The bowl turned out so nice!
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
That was an alcohol dye I was using. I considered using a black dye under or over the blue dye, and even tried it on an early trial run, but found it wasn't necessary. Thanks for watching, RDB.

You are to funny Rick! The Ash bowl turned out very nice... even if you just left it with the burning. I've been respectfully following you for awhile, very much like your videos. I did see some when you used a Galaxy lathe (most likely my next purchase) and would love your thoughts on said lathe. Cheers and keep your ash covered...LOL (couldn't resist!)
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Scott. I had that Galaxy DVR lathe on loan from Teknatool to do a review for More Woodturning magazine when it was still publishing - I wrote articles for them and had a monthly feature about KZread videos from the previous months. After 4-5 months, I declined to do the review and returned the lathe to them. I ran into nine significant problems with the Galaxy. When I initially got it, the headstock was making a screeching noise above 1000 rpm - they sent me a new headstock . Then I had a problem with the tailstock - they replaced the tailstock. Those were the biggest problems. I forget what the other problems were - they were not as serious, but were still indicative of a serious lack of quality control. So I’d not recommend that lathe. I have a Powermatic 35-20 and I can recommend it wholeheartedly. I have also seen good comments about the Laguna lathes - they have several that are not as expensive as the Powermatic but are still good-sized and powerful. Oneway also has a great reputation but their lathes are quite expensive (at least to me). Same with Robust - if I had been willing to spend $5000-6000, that”s what I would have bought instead of the Powermatic. Good luck with your purchase - there”s a lot of good machines out there!

Beautiful bowl, I love the final colors and detail. Question, where did you get your makers mark stamp?
