Derek, if you want to continue the OceanGate/Titanic theme for awhile longer, my requests are: 1). A side-by-side comparison between Stockton Rush and Elizabeth Holmes; 2). An "OceanGate Extravaganza" where you examine the mentality and body language of everyone close to that company, including former clients and would-be clients.

💖 There is, also, the "us-against-the-world"/"strangers-in-a-strange-land" bonding that could've kept Rose & Jack together. In America, they could've hidden away in the five-corners area of New York & thrived. Either as early street evangelicals, or city maintenance workers. 😁 Another example I call the "Joy-to-the-world" mentality, exemplfied in Elton John's "Friends" movie/soundtrack. Without "Assistants", a.k.a. "servants", or "slaves", as the world Rose came from, waiting on them every second providing free food/beverages, clean clothes/shoes/bedding/living quarters, would that relationship have lasted? Due to not knowing Jack's previous relationships & if he was a true bi-sexual, ( As I strongly suspect, i.e., As many homeless at that point-in-time were because homosexually was illegal & punishable with a harsh prison sentence, and/or deportation to Australia. ), there are too many variables that would've ended that relationship within a few weeks, unless Rose accepted an "open relationship", e.g., Sally Bowles & Brian Roberts In "Cabaret", that, for good reason, didn't last. 🥰 Another alternate situation, considering that time in history, because Rose was wealthy, she could've afforded a medically safe abortion, plus the ability to leave that situation & not look back. Rose could've, as in Cabaret's "Maximilian von Heune" character, been using Jack as an amusement for cocktail hour chatter, thereby Rose could say she has consorted with the "Working Class" & survived. 😏

Do you ever think about crushes you have had in the past, or perhaps dates and think "what if I had settled with them?" I have, and I don't like any of the scenarios on where I would be. There's ONE man that I would be a wealthy widow by now, but I don't think I would be as content as I am right now with my current husband. Hell, I'd probably still be an addict, if I had stayed with him. Four days is not long enough to get to know if you're compatible with someone. Had Jack have lived, shed absolutely have run back to her mother at some point, which I assume her mother would still associate with Cal. And I hope Cal would have found a nice wife by that point. One who respects him the way Rose (brat) never did.

The unbuttoned shirt, undone tie, messy hair and glass of apple juice was a nice touch while talking about vacations. As far as the movie, realistically the two of them would definitely not have succeeded in a relationship off of the ship. Watching Titanic is no different than watching Cinderella or Snow White. Relationships are hard work. Life is hard work. It's a horrible idea to expect a relationship to be anything close to what you see in a movie. You would be extremely disappointed. Just take movies for what they are, entertainment.

Despite this all being true, have you ever noticed that lots of people expect life and marriage to be like the movies, and when it isn't they divorce or throw it all away? I think our culture encourages people to be pretty unrealistic about most of the important things in life, and it leads to making decisions that are more readily regretted or inappropriate for the person/s involved.

I never thought Jack and Rose's relationship would last. They knew each other for such a short time and come from such drastically different worlds that it would have been very difficult indeed for them to make it work (especially in the early 20th Century, when social stigma and reputation were major considerations). Even if she did leave with him, any money they got from selling the necklace would probably be gone pretty quickly do to Jack's wild living and suddenly having the money to do whatever he wanted. I think Rose would hate being poor, which would lead to her resenting Jack, as she'd blame him for ruining her life/reputation, making it impossible for her to go back to her old life and social sphere.

Well in the ending scene of Titanic they showed all those pictures of young Rose after the Titanic, and Rose got to live how she wanted. We have evidence to suggest she loved living the life she dreamed. So, I’m not sure that part is true, although I can completely agree that it may not have worked out between them in the long run due to Jack not having experience in dealing with a lot of money. I still like to think they would have made it, but I think most of us know that in the real world, most relationships like Jack and Roses will end as fast as they begin, especially when you consider the fact that they were teenagers.

Jack & Rose’s relationship survival depends upon both characters ability to live without money or social connection. Rose is in many ways a spoiled brat: she has never had to want for anything-all things she has ever wanted -including art, money, culture, social standing-you name it -she has had access to it -EXCEPT the unknown adventure of surviving without connection (like Jack.) Rose is attracted to the romance of adventure & the unknown; but, the cold, harsh crush of understanding that occurs when one actually experiences the reality that life is nothing like a pleasure cruise is something that Rose will have to learn the hard way. Jack is very familiar with being one of the “have nots” of society: living under bridges on the left bank of Paris & drawing one-legged prostitutes who are starving in Montmartre. Rose has Jack sketch a picture of her “like one of [his]” impoverished models. However, Rose is not on the street: she is in a first class suite on an ocean liner wearing a multi-million dollar diamond. Rose may want adventure but she would never be able to embrace a life on the streets. This is why Jack must die in order for Rose to embrace the fantasy that she could have survived with Jack. Rose survives; but, she marries someone who supports her financially (& why shouldn’t she?) Rose throws the diamond overboard at the end of the movie because it represents her childish dreams that sank with the Titanic.

I like the depth of that analysis. Youth frozen in time is a huge theme in everyone's lives, if only unconsciously. That's one of the most powerful aspects of the fascination with the Titanic - that it was the youth of the entire Western world frozen in time. I have no doubt that's what the OceanGate victims (and would-be victims) really risked their lives for. Having a closer look at the Titanic through a tiny porthole in a dangerous submersible doesn't come close to explaining it as well as the search for what's been lost in our lives, especially our spiritual connection to life itself.

They would have eventually parted because you can't eat love. Love doesn't put a roof over your head. When she spent her second night under a bridge and realized she would have to support them with prostitution, she would have left and ran back to her mother and Cal (which after what that psycho did to him, i would hope he wouldn't take her back.) And tbh, Cal did nothing wrong. He took on her and her mother AND their debts. Bought her a huge diamond as an engagement gift. Inb4 abusive When? When he tossed the table after she flat out lied to his face about where she was the previous night, which was spending it with a homeless vagrant? I'd be mad too. When he slapped her? He had found out she had slept with this man that she knew for just a couple of days. If my husband did that to me, you bet I'd lightly tap that cheek. And then he gets her on a boat to safety (after she completely disrespected him and cheated on him) and this psycho jumps back on to the boat to be with the man she cheated on him with? I'd probably try and shoot him too or at least fire some shots to scare them. And after all of that, he still looked for her after the disaster. He cared about her and she was a whiny entitled brat who wanted her cake and eat it too. Inb4 he saw her as a trophy A broke fairly attractive girl is now a trophy? He was the heir to a steel tycoon. There were plenty of other more beautiful women with money that he could have had if he just wanted a trophy. If she and her mother were broke, then Cal was the one who got her all of the clothes and the paintings, etc. Cal was the better option. by far. He wouldn't have slapped her if she hadn't pulled her little stunt and respected him the way normal people respect the person theyre going to marry. OH and let's talk about how she kept the diamond and never used it to help her family and how she got on a boat whose sole purpose was to find this diamond (at 35k a day,) and she throws it overboard?? REALLY? What a psycho. Oh and she dies and goes to spend her heaven with a man she barely knew instead of her husband that she married and built a life with? When I was a young girl, I liked rose and thought Jack was the better option. But now that I'm 40 with life experience, I see how Rose was a little disrespectful brat, and Cal did nothing wrong and was the better choice in husband. As I said, love doesn't put a roof over your head. You can't eat it. Someone has to have a job. And Jack didn't. He had no way to support Rose, who clearly couldn't support herself in any way.

@@smileandpresson it's amusing how perception changes to everything as you get older and gain life experience. When you're a young idealistic child, you truly think that true love like they show in the movies exists and that love is all you need. Nope. Someone needs an income. because you have to eat and have shelter. And true love in movies is a lie. Real true love is cuddling up in the couch with your spouse and having no qualms or embarrassment about cracking one off when your stomach rumbles. And you aren't even embarrassed when you jump up and yell "I gotta take a dump" as you realize that you were lucky to trust that fart and that it didn't betray you at that moment. And your spouse doesn't get mad or even annoyed about you cracking one off on his leg. He says nothing and asks "do you want me to pause it?" That's real and realistic true love. And you'll never see that in a movie.

It's something I call 90 Day Fiancé syndrome. You meet someone on vacation and everything is fun and care free. You don't have to worry about real life. But as we've seen on 90 Day Fiancé, every time these couples who met on vacation in paradise go back to the real world, they struggle horribly. Same thing here with Jack and Rose. Her being accustomed to the finer things in life would've been a massive hurdle that I don't think they would've even come close to making it over.

2 weeks tops, she was used to high end suitors, men with good paying jobs that could care for a family. He showing that he had nothing of that in him not even being willing to work, she would think "i cant build a future with a man like this" he cant provide for a family. Because during that time men were working and many women were not, they were at home taking care of their children and household. So she would think, if i am with him we both have to starve and so does our children and sleeping under bridges and in alleys isnt the kind of relationship i want. So two weeks tops. But we can go from it from the other direction too, we know he isnt very skilled at what he does due to the movie aka stealing, he would feel he would have to take care of her so he would do the only thing he could, doing more daring thefts where he would quickly be caught. Leaving rose with no income so she would go back to her old way of life abandoning jack. See it ends the same way in both instances, i wonder if there is some link from that to todays world, i wonder i wonder :P

"true love" Somebody is young. By that I mean you. How they gonna pay for that home? Sell the diamond? That bish wouldn't even sell it to help her family she eventually had, and she had a stupid justification for it. "It would mean getting Cals help." She wouldn't have. Cal was the better option. You can't eat love. Love doesn't put a roof over your head. Jack had no way to support her. She was also a clear entitled brat, and wouldn't have accepted one night under a bridge. But again, if you aren't young, I have to assume you're just old and dumb and that is not something one wants to be. If you have to be old, you need to be wise too.

I believe there are a number of errors in your analysis of rose and jack in your titanic review. I think you need to do another titanic analysis. There are several things wrong in your conclusion that anyone who watched the film a few times could take apart. The first is rose and jack first saw each other, when talking to tommy ryan. She was looking down from the first class ship balcony and he was looking up. In fact jack was so distracted that he didn't respond to a funny joke that tommy ryan had said. Also rose was trying to leave her sheltered society life, when rescued by jack. sure it was a coincidence, but she even was attempting to jump off the ship at the time that jack talked her out of it. Also the diamond necklace was planted by caledon, while he was wearing the jacket. he wanted him out of the way. it is true that he did steal the jacket, however it could be argued that he did it in order to blend in with the first class, so he could talk with rose and try to change her mind to go with him. whether he would have returned it or not, I don't know. there was no money in the jacket or valuables. just the jacket he took from a first class passenger who left it on an outdoor recliner. The film is clear in the fact that jack wasn't on vacation but returning home. It was not a vacation as more of a way back home to the united states. he was also not a thief but a poor content artist and traveler. In the film he states why he is in that profession, that he paints portraits of people, and that he is happy going from place to place and painting. If he had been a thief then he could have stolen from any number of his clients who he painted for. It is true that he was gambling with fabrizio de rossi to win his ticket on the titanic. however, gambling and being a thief are two different things. there was no indication in his personality that he was a criminal. the film also showed how ignorant he was. when molly or margaret molly brown offered him her newly purchased tuxedo to wear. the one she was returning with that she purchased for her nephew in europe. he was unaware that he wasn't dressed properly to go down there and would have been laughed at. a profession thief would likely know the types of clothes and situation they are in, to fit in a place where they could steal from people. perhaps it isn't as important now, but it I think there would have been more awareness of that back then.

I don't know if THEY would have made it, but Jack was 100% better than Cal. Cal was a physically abusive narcissist- I was married to one when I was 18- 24. Plus Jack's art was very good. He may have found work , even for a newspaper or something? It's been proven he could have fit on that door though. :)

I won't ask, I'll answer.... 1). DVS answered this part in the video - the promise of repeated adrenaline rushes is a great substitute to women who've experienced ordinary emotional connections to males (starting with their fathers) as painfully barren. 2). Their fathers (their primary male role models) came across to them in their early formative years as essentially criminal in nature, if only on the personality level, and they psychologically fused with that.
